Not better than most

Prepare to hear this phrase at least a gazillion times this week and that’s being conservative. Has any other call been squeezed to death as much as this one in the history of sports?? At the time was good but cmon it’s beyond its sell by date

UK perspective. Seems like the Masters clip is played just a much here as the Players clip. Well, when we are not trying to be mean to members of the Royal Family that is.

I've said for a long time its the most overrated big call in golf.  And I've also said the best thing about it is when Johnny shiats all over the call right in the middle of it when he distills the whole thing down to "how 'bout in?".  NBC edits that audio part out of it at times.

I throw up a little in my mouth every time I hear it.  I think I should watch The Players this week on mute.  Probably would make it more enjoyable.

Nowadays Gary Koch is really just there to show shots that were "juuust a moment ago" and say "eeever so slightly".

Verne Lundquist's '86 and '05 Masters calls are iconic because of the fact that it was a Major and the significance of the putt by Jack and chip by Tiger.

 

Koch's call was @ the Player's and if it was anyone but Tiger, would we even care?  How come we don't hear Perks chip in on 16?  Obviously saying the above with tongue firmly in cheek but I believe NBC is trying to elevate the Players importance and elevate to a Major.  That's a whole other conversation....

Will we here that more from Koch or how he interject well, well, well in-between sentences.

 

A fun drinking game to down a bottle quick is with some buddies watching golf take a shot whenever Gary says "well".

"expect anything different" is the worst Tiger call. It just sounds weird when he says it, and a bit forced

 

I think "Better than most" was pretty genuine because he didn't know it would go in , i liked it. It's overplayed but it was a good call.

 

Same with the "in your life" call...didn't mind that either

Lundquist's calls stand out because he used an economy of words and let the moment breathe while it was in action.  "Maybe?  Yesssir!".  Genius.  Tiger's chip in on 16, "Have you ever in your life......??!!" didn't come till the ball was in the hole.  Koch would have described every rotation in painstaking detail followed by "A lesson for those watching at home - you probably need to play more break than you think on downhill chips like that."  Because that's always my problem on 16 at Augusta.

Problem with "in your life" is it acts as though that shot had never been made before.  Davis Love III had made it about 5 years prior.

Johnny says "How about in" two seconds after Koch's first "better than most" and after the ball takes a hard right turn toward the hole. Koch said "better than most" before the ball turned right.

 

Personally, I think it's a great call and I don't get sick of it.

True, but it wasn't on the 70th hole of the tournament while in contention. And Tiger's hung on the edge giving it added drama. Same shot, but that's where the similarities end.

The thing that drives me batty about Koch is the way his voice always rises through a sentence and then falls at the end, in an "I told you so" tone. 

 

Listen for it next time.  Or do yourself a favor and don't, because it's all you'll hear from that point forward.

I complained about this in another thread...but you could make a drinking game out of it.

 

Just like at the Masters...take a shot every time Nance says 'Patron' or 'Mr. Jones.'

 

Of course, you'd be passed out on the couch after 20 minutes.
