Played Harbor Links last 09/13/24, my first time this year and shot a decent 92, one stroke off my best score (Played here at least 5 times over 2 years as part of the regular rotation of tracks in 2 golf leagues that I compete in) at this track located in my town.

However, I had what was probably the worst putting performance (SGP: -1.94) I can remember with an abysmal 40 putts due to 6 three-putts leading to a measley 39 feet of putts holed.

20240918_155206.jpg.9b1e127f0c527427e67285c30a2a5761.jpg

On a positive note, my drives (FIR: 43%) were decent with no mishits while my long irons (hybrids, GIR: 39%) were surprisingly accurate even from long-range (over 150 yards).

I will be back because I know that I'm close to breaking 90 on this course and more importantly, I played more than 600 yards over my golf league senior specs at 5,816 yards so hopefully I'll be able set a new personal best score if I can remember to play from the correct set of tees next time. 🤓

Side note:

I was satisfied with finishing bogey-bogey on the last two holes after dark (night golf) after teeing off at 4 PM  to qualify for the $32 twilight rate and avoid the $80+ regular green fee.

Course trivia:

This track was built on reclaimed land that was a former sand mine with significant elevation changes so it was a really tough walk for me.

About 140 million yards of sand  was transported by barge to NYC where it was used to construct the sidewalks, skyscaparers, water tunnels and infrastructure of New York City during the building boom in the early 20th century.

Played a very short but tight course. It's a par 71 rated 65.7 with a 107 slope playing one tee up from the back (This is where they have under 50 play in tournaments there so that's what I usually play for casual rounds too). I had one of the best driving days of my life. Was green side on 6 par 4s, hit every par 5 in two and drove one par 4. I hit 3 of the 4 par 3s in regulation.

I shot +3 74.

I went back and put my round in a strokes gained app for giggles.

+2.68 strokes off the tee.

I basically lost 6 shots chipping around the greens and 5 putting vs scratch 😂 absolutely nightmare scoring wise kept me from a career day.

Gearheart. +6. Got a $50 discount because the greens were freshly aerated. Not going to complain, they are still amazing. If you have ever played, you know 18 is a beast. 583 and the green is like 40 feet above you on the approach. This was glorious, but a bit long. Was pin high and left on the greens, but solid up and downs and 2 great bunker shots.

That's a good round out there.. I've only played it once but shot 87 off scratch 🙈 Can't wait until that score comes off my index its embarrassing to look at.

If I played it again I don't think I'd ever take more than 5 iron off the tee. It's nearly impossible to hold those greens from 60 yards

It's my 4th round out there, I have played every September the last 4 years since my wife got me a round for my 50th. It's an hour and 45 minutes drive and so totally worth it. Especially with $50 off. 🤣

Slightly hungover and lacking sleep through a combination of late night and my 2 year old waking me up at 6.30, i went out in 47 (+11), a light rain started on the 10th tee which brought down my hangover temperature and saw me birdie 3 holes on way to my first ever level par 9 holes on the back, to finish with an 83.   12 putts on the back 9, even with a missed 3 footer on 11.

Came home loving the game, had the 9s been reversed i would have been in a somewhat different mood, funny old game!

An absolute mystery golf remains.

Went out -  to not my favorite track. Kind of just holding it together at first. Not really doing anything well. Bogey train. Can’t make a putt.  Feel like my irons aren’t compressing. Driver two way miss. Not swinging with any confidence.

Then a complete disaster. Two in a row into the hazard off the tee right in front of me on a drivable par four.  Contemplating jumping in the hazard myself. I eventually hit one up to about 30 yards from the hole. Hit an absolutely perfect pitch to 6 feet. Bury the putt to save my triple. Because of course.

I just stop keeping score at the point and tell myself to just enjoy the beautiful weather and savor being on the course. I turn off my phone gps and just use the course markers.

I find something on the 15th with my irons.  I proceed to hit 3 approach shots in a row that are about the best I’ve hit all year.  A 7 iron from 170 to about 25 feet.  An absolutely ripped 5 iron from 200 on an uphill par 3 to about 30 feet.  Then a downwind 7 iron from 180 to 10 feet. Buried the birdie putt. These last three irons were absolute lasers and bore absolutely no resemblance to any iron I’d hit on the previous fourteen holes.

What a fun, stupid, rewarding, merciless a****** of a sport.

Played in absolutely horrible conditions with vertical rain and a stiff wind through 12 holes and shot a +23 over 95 at Eisenhower Park - Blue course last Saturday.

20240929_232021.jpg.5aa70f86c5dfd99256c9582fb1ca5023.jpg

I didn't have any time for any practice (driving range or putting) as I was a bit busy that day.

Still, I'd give myself a pat on the back for completing the round as it was my first time walking while carrying my fully-loaded golf bag that added 27.8 lbs. while also playing the last 6 holes after sunset without my long throw LED flashlight that I always use as part of my night golf equipment.

Handicap was at 20 and had been shooting 97-100 for MONTHS. About a year ago I had a stretch of rounds in low 90s and even 1-2 in high 80s.

Then BOOM, 84! Few things came together:

1. Lessons from a coach who's awesome (went to a couple guys before who just went through the motions and never really helped me get better)

- biggest change: left hand low putting (prob dropped about 6-8 strokes per round with this alone)

2. Tweaked my equipment to better suit my swing. Old coach fitted me into some shafts that just don't work well for me.

- Driver shaft: going from 70g, 6.5/stiff+ to 60-65g, 6.0, this let me loosen up my wrists a little which has helped a TON

- 3W: 70-75g stiff

- hybrids: going from 70g to 85g (haven't done this yet)

- irons: will be going from kbs tour 120 stiff to modus 105 stiff (haven't done this yet, but tested it out a lot and worked WAY better for me)

3. Fewer penalty strokes

What to work on:

- still hitting some pull/hooks with irons and on par 3 tee shots

- chunking my 50-100y shots

18 holes yesterday with my supersenior buddies from the white tees. Two birdies, one blowup hole with two pond splashed balls and some issues putting.  Made a few, missed too many.  Brain was not engaging the muscle control.

Try again today at our weekly scramble.

Played on Sunday. Shot a personal best 98 for the season. I know that's far from WRX Standardtm but for me it was an achievement. Driver was shaky all day but 3w off the tee was like a laser. Best hole of the day was #8 (par 5). Sliced my tee shot into the next time zone but surprisingly had a viable second shot. Hit the purest 4i of my life to the best possible layup spot to the island green. PW to about 15 feet and 2 putts for the par.. Good times! Note to self:  keep clubbing up and aim for the back of the green!

Sadly that will probably be the last round for me this year, due to family commitments, a week long business trip, and the weather starting to turn cold here. The joys of golf in Canada lol ...

Cheers everyone!

This past Saturday, I shot a 1-over, 73 on a 69.6/126 (DarkHorse GC - Auburn, California) which was a 3.0 differential.  I was a 10.2 going into that round so, yes, it was flagged as an exceptional score and my 20 differentials were reduced by 1, including the 3.0 which became a 2.0 - thus the "was".  Overnight, my index dropped from 10.2 to 8.4.

A bit hard to believe when I topped my 5W tee shot on #1.  Two bogeys and two birdies on the front and a lone bogey on the back.   I have no idea when was the last time I had a single-digit index.  Even when I had dropped to 10.2, that was the lowest I'd been in the last few years.

After three straight days of rain there was absolutely no roll with the fairways and rough being brutally high. Eight/nine inch rough was especially tough which helped make my chipping miserable.

It was good to get out and play!

In my weekend group I play with 90% of the time

Our handicap is the last 8 scores you have posted

These are my last 8 (most recent 1st)

76 75 82 73 78 73 79 78

I have never carded so many sub 80 rounds in my life

I don't even think I am playing lights out

Not even that many birdies

It's mostly just up and down or 2 putt pars

I am playing to a 2 hcp in that group

I am about to start kicking my ball back into the woods to raise my hcp so I can win some money again

Started the round off with a birdie, and it went downhill from there. 🤣 I had 3 other birdie looks and they all stopped inches short.

6 holes today, coming back after major AC joint issues in both shoulders. 5 pars and a bogey. Didn't overswing. Had control of my ball all day but for a tee shot on a par 3 that found the sand and ended in a bogey.

Distances were almost 100pct.

Most importantly: did not reinjure myself and I'm not in crazy pain this evening.

Shot a 95... at SPYGLASS. Had a blast--really fun track. Hit a 350y drive on #1, had an eagle look, then 3-putted for par lol. Got a birdie on #11--on it 3 and drained a LONG putt for the birdie.

Struggled off the tee hitting into trouble with pull hooks with a shut face. Think I've finally figured out a way to stop the bleeding mid-round if that happens again. Approach game has similar issues--esp par 3 tee shots. Same solution should work. Short game/putting have been solid.

Even. The distance control with the new irons is spot on, but my aim is off. I think the black face looks less closed than it is and I pull it right. I made some really good putts outside of 10 feet. A solid round even if my stats are great.🤣

Sunset Grove isn't challenging, but it's fun.
