Can anyone recommend places to go out in Lansing/East Lansing?  This will mostly be in the afternoons since we're playing during the days.

A small group is going in July.  Mid 30's and all married lol.  Love patios/pubs/social houses/etc.

Forest Akers West at MSU and Eagle Eye are my 2 favorites in Lansing.

How tough is it to get on at LD if I am a member elsewhere?  Is it as easy as the head pro making a phone call?  I am in Benton Harbor several times a year for work, usually hit Stoatin Brae on the way over from Ann Arbor/Detroit and Harbor Shores in town.

We have golf booked at Eagle Eye, Hawks Hollow, and some others.  More so just looking for places to go out to after to have some dinner and drinks.  We're staying downtown Lansing.

More often than not, I end up going to Eastwood Town Center at 127 and Lake Lansing Rd, enough variety of restaurants there.  I’ll hit Mitchell’s Fish House, Bostons works as well,.

Peanut Barrel in downtown East Lansing for the Patio.  Great burgers

El Az Teca in East Lansing for rooftop patio and amazing mexican food

Nut house in Lansing.  Nice Patio and decent food

Stober's Bar in Lansing for a cool old bar (not food)

Creole Burger Bar in old town is solid, but no patio

Zoobie's Old Town Tavern in old town as well for drinks and snacks

Good morning gents, looking like some great weather these next few days.  Hey, I was reading through and trying to find info on certain courses/clubs and who plays where/lives where and what courses/clubs they play at.  It was a little time consuming and tough to navigate to be honest.  If anyone here is interested, I think it would be fun to keep a master list(Ill keep it) of who belongs where, who can help get people on certain courses, etc.  I was thinking about this as I was planning a few trips this morning up north(Kinglsey,Lochenheath,True North) and was going through my emails with the Pro's out there and trying to set these things up should be easier if you "know the right people".

Perhaps we could have it pinned to the first page of this thread, and create a master reference for the guys in the thread to look at?

Our club in Brighton has quite a few reciprocals, as well as another member I know here is on the west side at Battle Creek CC and they have a lot of reciprocals as well.  I know a lot of mine don't require a 'member' per-se, which is nice.

If anyone here was interested, I think it would be a cool idea.  How many times do we say "gosh I wish I knew someone who could get me out at Kingsley, or knew someone at Franklin Hill CC, etc."

Let me know what you guys think and I'll keep the list updated.  Won't use names, just your WRX handle if you want.

Just throwing this out there for this upcoming year

Thanks!

Nick

I'm not a member anywhere, but I don't know that guys who are would really want to have people they don't know IRL hitting them up all the time for invites to play at their clubs.

I renewed my membership at OU this year. I skipped last year to save some money because we were finishing our basement.

If anyone ever wants to play Sharf or Katke just DM and I'll see what I can do.

Hopefully everyone is getting out on the course today! We're playing Devil's Ridge. I saw Metamora and Westwynd are also open here in Northern Oakland County.

I am always happy to try and help someone play Battle Creek CC.  Just send me a PM.  Obviously, I would be hesitant if that person was new to Golfwrx or other red flags.

As far as other courses where I have a reciprocal, I don't use that benefit very often and when I do, it is always with other BCCC members.

I guess I didn't realize how much of a black mark Maple Hill made until I went to the golf show in Grand Rapids a couple months back...talking to a few of the smaller vendors, they'd ask questions like "where do you shop for golf stuff?" and "have you ever been fitted before?" and the eye-rolls I'd get when I'd say "Yeah, Maple Hill" were consistent among nearly every vendor I talked to.

Reading the "Free Fittings" thread reminded me of my dad's experience at MH:  He was there during some off-hours and looking to buy a whole new kit.  While he was being set up with some Taylor Made irons and Tour Edge woods, the sales guy (probably bored) actually did the whole fitting thing, and gave my dad a free half-hour lesson as he was trying out clubs.

That was generally my experience when I got my first set of clubs there 'round about 2000 (when MH did custom builds of kit clubs)...got a free swing lesson on the driving range, got measurements taken, and got the clubs custom built for me (upsized, of course, because I was 12 at the time and 12 year olds are still growing).

Pertaining to the Free Fittings thread, ^^that^^ experience stuck with me, and here I am 22 years later still shopping and buying stuff from Maple Hill.

I don't know if it's a black mark, but sure, Maple HIll has definitely had an impact on other vendors.  I'd be very curious to see what would happen to the golf equipment market, though, if the major OEMs didn't have minimum acceptable pricing ... the sanitized term for price-fixing.  Would the big players just stomp the small ones?  Could the smaller retailers survive or even thrive charging more for equipment but giving a higher level of service?

Maple Hill has really mastered the level of letting the customer get (almost) whatever level of engagement they want.  Do you just want to browse?   They're really good in my experience at leaving you alone to do just that if you want.  Have questions?  They're well staffed so there's always someone handy to ask.  Need recommendations?  Sure.  Want to hit some things?  No problem, they'll tape 'em up and send you across the street to the range.  Basic fitting?  Yup.   That covers at least 90% of golfers.

I know you can schedule actual fittings but don't know how they measure up with Club Champion or the other competition.  Would actually be curious as to how they stack up.  I think they have beefed up their fitting setup both in Grandville and Muskegon - if I get serious about buying a new driver this year maybe I'll check them out.

Speaking of Muskegon, I believe Chase Hammond opens today.  Lincoln isn't open yet and I haven't seen an opening day announced for Stonegate.

I was just shocked at the consistent eye rolls when MH was brought up in conversation.  One gentleman in particular had a huge rack full of 80s and 90s iron sets - his whole thing was that he'd sell you these classic clubs, but with a thorough, modern fitting.  I was seriously checking out some 1996 Big Bertha irons, so the gentleman came over to see how I was doing and explained his business model - asked if I'd ever been fitted before, and I said that yes, I've had a rudimentary fitting for my new/modern/good clubs at Maple Hill, and was totally fitted for some custom/kit clubs when I was a youngster.  The guy rolled his eyes and kinda grumbled "Yeah, they're the second biggest golf discounter in the country" or something.

Price-wise...hell, I paid less for my demo-set Ping irons (through some creative accounting on their end, out of shop assets, no inventory) than I'm seeing on 2ndswing.com or Callaway Pre-owned.  But, once again, they proved that they want me, the customer, to be happy.  I've never had that level of engagement at other golf shops in West Michigan (the Gaylord golf center was cool as hell, but that's close to a 3 hour drive).  It was only because they couldn't budge on the price of some Wilson Staff irons (that I could hit the crap out of...seriously, SO straight and consistent) that they brought out the Pings for me.

But there it is:  2ndswing and Callaway Pre Owned are selling my irons used, for less than I paid for a demo set.

I played Hawk Hollow last summer when my wife ran a marathon, but I'll definitely keep Timber Ridge in mind!

Timber Ridge is the most difficult of the Eagle Eye courses and has an “Up North” feel, no houses on the course and more roll.  Number 18 is as difficult a par 4 as you’ll find.  If you play Hawk Hollow consider including the “Jurassic” nine which is routed through an old quarry. Its quirky but interesting.

Was fitted for irons at MH Muskegon last year.  Was second guessing the fitting so scheduled another to be sure.  Ended up buying a set and not only did they give me a great price but didn’t charge for the second fitting.  They have always been great to do business with.

BTW prefer Timber Ridge over Hawk Hollow.

I am opposite of that.  Too many holes at Timber Ridge with no landing area.

Sunnybrook is one of the only courses in West Michigan that I want to play but haven't had the chance to.  I grew up right near there, and my buddies and I used to ride our bikes there and steal golf balls from the bushes and hazards.

  • 2 weeks later...

Anybody have some courses that will be open this week with carts?

i know we have about a 1/2” of rain coming in tonight - but 2pm on tomorrow looks manageable.

i have buddies that travel to my place every masters and we typically play Wednesday through Sunday. The rain and late thaw I feel is throwing a wrench in things, but willing to travel slightly to play.

we’re in Montcalm county - any help is appreciated
