I've played it probably 20 times. Imo it's a bit tough for the rest of the people we're playing with. Great course though. 

 

I don't know anything about Hidden River though. It might also be tough.

I haven't played Black Lake yet (until next year) but I wouldn't say Hidden River is THAT tough. More so just great condition and an "Up-North" feel.

Perfect. Black Lake is awesome, one of my personal Michigan top 5. This group's pace of play would be atrocious there. My son has only played golf once since spring break lol.

GAM Golf Day at Selfridge ANGB tomorrow morning.  First Gam Day for me, just swapped my Texas GHIN membership back to this home state.  Should be an interesting experience since I retired from the base 25 years ago and used to play it regularly.  My old unit's Deputy Commander is starting us off.

My grandpa played selfridge every Sunday at 630 am for the last 15 years of his life.  His best friend was a colonel.  He loved that place.

Really fun course, a couple blind tee shots on the back nine. Look at an aerial view to pick out some aim points!

Heck, I might have known him and the colonel.  I was there for nearly 20 years before retiring in 1998.

 

I ended up placing 6th in the senior net rankings and 7th gross.  It was a blast from the past playing it.

Very fun course to play. Definitely will play it again. Was in fine shape. Greens ran true, pretty forgiving off the tee. 
Nice people, and pretty good food options when you’re done at the clubhouse/ restaurant-and the halfway house (in the middle of the course near several holes, has the essentials too while your playing. 
Cool driving range to warm up on as well.

FYI, Manistee National - Revenge apparently just punched their greens today. We have a large group headed there this weekend, which was booked months ago.  Less than happy with this recent development that was in no way alluded to at the time of booking.

I spoke to them about 45 days ago for a last minute trip up and the first thing I asked was - when are you aerating? We got screwed last year because we showed up the day they aerated Revenge for our trip. They gave me the news and I said thanks, see you in the spring.

Dang it. We are still going, because of all the arrangements and time off etc, but this is giving me a bad impression of this place. Every course I have ever golfed mentions this at the time of booking, or has it posted on their website or FB page, etc. I won't be going back to this place, ever.  And they are still getting full greens fees, to boot. Absurd.

Playing High Pointe this weekend in Traverse City.  It's gonna be outstanding and if you have not checked out their website take a peak as this is gonna be a top 5 course in Michigan for sure and might end up being considered the best of the best when its all said and done

Played 3 great courses in SW MI the past 2 days.

 

But I want to give a shout-out to Orchard Hills CC. Not the most upscale club you'll find but I loved it and here's why:

Staff - Exceptionally friendly and welcoming.

Location - Right next to the St Joe river with great views and wildlife.

Course - Absolute blast with many dog legs, rolling hills, mature trees (est 1915) and challenging greens.

 

Hope to get another crack at it some day as I'll definitely play it more conservatively.

 

Edit: I also want to give a shout-out to Gary Z's Sub Shop in Buchanan. Good stuff and super friendly folks.

And a shout-out to Lehman's Brewery in Buchanan. The 2 pints of Lefty Blonde we swilled in ~20 minutes to meet our tee time hit the spot. And the 2 ladies serving us were an absolute riot.
