Anyone play the orchards lately? Just wondering how the greens are healing. Playing Saturday

Ended the year at a 3.9 Index.  Ended last year at 1.9, but that was my lowest index in a long long time due to a hot streak in late August/Early Sep.  

 

Ball striking was consistent this year.  Putter was hot or cold, no in-between.  Just a lot of 74 to 77 Rounds with one 72 thrown in. 

 

I hope everyone had a great year.  Given the weather, maybe a couple more rounds in November!

Looks like tomorrow is the last decent day for a while.  Of course I have a tee time on Friday.  Going to still try to get it in but it's probably going to require a couple extra layers.  Weekend and next week forecast is just grim.

I played probably the lowest number of rounds that I have played in years. We moved to a new house this year, and all of the activity surrounding moving and getting our old house ready to sell really took up a ton of my time between May and July. I started the year hitting it like complete garbage, and just playing terrible. My handicap got as high as 2.9. I took a lesson from Monte Scheinblum out in California in June, and he really got me straightened out, compared to how I had been hitting it, and I got a lot better later in the season. The biggest improvement was to my driving. From about July on, I'd say that I hit it better off the tee than I ever have for any prolonged stretch. I finished the year at a 0.7 index. We're planning a renovation to our new house this coming year (professionals will be doing the work), so hopefully that doesn't have the same effect as the move on my number of rounds played, and I'll be able to build on the improvements I saw later in the season.

I saw Manistee Nat'l just finished a short course. And of course they renamed the main two courses.

 

Have they made any other improvements in the last 10 years? I'm wondering if it's worth doing the Arcadia combo trip in 2024.

 

Side note: we're almost completely set for the Yoop in 2023. Shoutout to @Pepetito and @timbo08 for the advice!

I haven't been in 10 years, so not sure.  The course across the street from the hotel is target golf for sure.

Day 1: drive up and play/stay at Baymills

Day 2: drive to Greywalls and play 36 or however many holes we can get in before dark

Day 3: play Sweetgrass and Sage Run

Love the itinerary.  There is a second course at Marquette golf club besides greywalls as i'm sure you know if you dont want to play that back to back.  I havent personally played it though.

So, having played both halves of Heritage...to have that one rated "DO NOT PLAY" is quite astonishing.

You’re right happy. If you want to drive several hours to play a 6000 yard basic track feel free.

Does anyone know of any courses in the Oakland County area that are open in the winter when there isn't any snow on the ground? I'm in Lake Orion but would definitely be willing to drive.

I'm also in Lake Orion. Sylvan Glen in Troy is almost always open for walking. Pontiac CC and The Fountains in Clarkston sometimes as well. Metamora CC is randomly open based on member demand; I know it was open today. My two buddies bailed so I didn't end up going, and just did some par 3 basement sim with my neighbor (followed by patio fire and a cigar).

Maybe we should get a hand full of wrxers and play a winter round. I’m not in lake orion but I’m not to far. Work in imlay city. But if we got a decent Saturday or Sunday I’d be down to go!

Forecast is looking decent for Monday and Tuesday. Hoping I can at least get 9 in, as we head to Florida Thursday for MLK weekend trip to visit my dad in Cocoa Beach. 

 

Side note - played Palmetto Dunes RTJ over Xmas break and it was in fantastic shape.

Love winter golf.  I’m currently at 95 consecutive months played in Michigan.

 

For others who go out when the temps dip-I have a request-don’t leave your trash all over the place. Yes, the bins are in for the season, but that doesn’t mean empties and other trash should just be left in ground by benches or tee markers.

 I bring a bag with me and either dangle it from an iron, or clip with a carabiner and pick up as I go (or add my own). Through 13 at Sylvan Glen today, have already emptied a full bag twice.

I'm doing this trip in July 2023.  Both Manistee courses and both Arcadia courses.  Will report back on it.

This might be a total long shot but you arent the guy that runs golfblogger.com are you? I only ask cause he just posted that he has 95 straight  months of golf as well in Michigan.
