Was this out at Hermitage?

Yes. Pretty easy process. After doing that I don't know how anyone gets fit for an iron or a wedge off of a mat. Turf interaction is so important.

I highlighted the follow up fitting aspect because I think that is important. I may be in the minority but I have an iron head that he doesn't carry. So I ordered 1 7 iron shaft in the Axiom 130X shaft to have it installed and then we are going to see how it specs out (also bending my 7 iron 1* flat). Based on this chart and speaking with him, that is going to be free of charge (not the shaft obviously, I had to pay for that). If it works out then we go forward from there. If it doesn't, I am not sure what we do but he is skilled enough to where I think he could figure out why it isn't working (my club has a shorter hosel / different BBGM which could make the shaft "feel" different).

I’m sure some Nashville players include Tim’s Ford in their rotation. We played there yesterday and they told us they are replacing the greens and will be closed this summer. In fact they’ve already sprayed the greens with RoundUp and warned us against licking any golf balls.

Can't remember as it has been 5+ years since playing there, but moving from Bent to Bermuda?  Seems like all of the courses here have or are in the process of doing this.

I think the greens are already hybrid Bermuda. I didn’t get the reason for replacing the surfaces. The better spend on the course would be to get the bunkers in shape, IMO. Some of them seem to have been abandoned.

Agreed, for some reason it just seems Tim's Ford just was a half notch conditions wise lower than other Bear Trace courses - say Harrison Bay.

I agree. There are quite a few bare patches of red clay that are in play. It seems like that entire peninsula is red clay under the turf and it has to be hard to keep the sod from eroding away.

I should have added, Nashville is a city full of golfers but not enough courses.  I am well north of Nashville and most everything around me is closed this Saturday for events (three different courses including my club both Saturday and sunday) and on Thursday morning, you cannot get a tee time any place I have called for Saturday before 2:00pm.

That Nicklaus course that was being built near White House is sorely needed now.  Not sure if it would have been public, but even another private track would have been a plus on the north side of Nashville to spread the demand.

Always jealous of anyone who gets play Golf Club regularly. Shoutout to Drew Holcomb for WALKING that course, as it should be.

Could have done without the Hot Chicken bit, fairly overdone and not something everyone (or really anyone until about 2010) talked about when I was growing up (I've been in Nashville my entire life). "Always the thing [hot chicken] Nashvillians knew about", not really my experience but ok. Wading into territory I don't know a ton about, I feel like Prince's was the epicenter of hot chicken (not Morrison's as this kid is painting it) and then stores like Hattie B's came in and corporatized it and co-opted it. I feel fairly certain it was in the African american community before us white folks came in and turned it into a fancy store by Vanderbilt....I'll get off my soapbox.

Things that really resonated with me:

Drew Holcomb 6:40 - I don't play golf to drink with the boys and dog on my wife

Dr. Metz 20:00 - Nashville public golf courses woven into the city (some of them)

21:00 - Broadway is a very distorted view of what nashville is.

100% agree. I lived in Nashville pre hot chicken craze, before the fancy Hattie B's near Vandy was built.

Prince's was a place people knew about but only a small number of people I knew had actually gone and tried it at the time. Definitely felt like part of the African American community and then all of a sudden it became corporatized and nationalized.

Nashville sucks public golf wise.

I am fortunate enough with work to get access to Governors Club, Brentwood CC, and Westhaven, but none of these clubs are even worth the prices they are asking now.

I do love Hermitage. The Presidents side is one of my favorite courses, but it is just so out of the way unfortunately. Franklin Bridge is around the corner but I refuse to pay their prime summer rates - $120? HAHAH.

Towhee is ok, but pace of play always is an issue and price wise it is OK.

I get very jealous when I visit family and friends in Wisconsin or Minnesota or really anywhere else where the public golf is better than half of the private tracks around here.

If I didn't have a family, Id be down playing RTJ courses every other weekend or traveling to Kentucky or southern Indiana.

@J4Camp what do you think about Harpeth Hills? Probably some of the best land of any golf course we have and you can walk it for $38.

Harpeth Hills is great, a few wonky holes but overall it's a great golf course. Issue I have with it is, practice area is terrible and it's always packed.

Played Percy Warner this past weekend and really enjoyed it. I think they did a great job with tree removal and expanding the greens and now that course is very playable for beginner golfers. Hopefully that alleviates some of the traffic on other munis. Will be curious do see how Shelby turns out. Some aggressive tree removal at Harpeth Hills would be great but the Friends of Warner Parks committee makes that almost impossible.

@kobe123  I'm going to try to guess the wonky holes. #1 for sure. #14 and #15? The green on #17 (back right pin position in the summer plays like a full stroke harder)?

Definitely number 1 and the short par 4 that's a small dog leg right before the par 3.

Kentucky has some great spots: Valhalla, Olde Stone, Cardinal Club, Park Mammoth

Southern Indiana: Victoria National

Valhalla is private and the new owners are sticklers for getting every nickel out of you they can.  Look at 400 quid or more, unless you have some kind of connection.

Olde Stone is private but if you can get on, it is absolutely fantastic.  The rate is much more reasonable than Valhalla, and just an absolute beast and pleasure to play.  And hopefully Belle is still roaming around there.

Cardinal Club is another "private " course that is likely easier to get on than many of the others.  Gets  a lot of play, but is a very good course in its own right.

Haven't played the others you mentioned, and I would add Hurstbourne to your list as well.  Good friend of mine grew up on that course, and would have played it last fall but they were renovating one of the nines.

I saw Belle earlier this year, I haven't seen her this summer. Hope she is okay!

Thought we had been talking more public sphere golf options.  I agree though, that those are good picks, just not accessible to most and spread well through the state, or into Indiana.

Aside from OS and Park Mammoth, most are more than a short drive from Nashville as well.

Public Golf in Nashville is not great. Private golf in Nashville is too expensive. This being the biggest reason I moved to Kentucky.

It's my home course, so I didn't know if I had seen you out there.

You wouldn't have, and this is not a slight or anything, but for a course that isn't necessarily tucked into a forest, we found we really didn't see a lot of other groups on the course.  The place was somewhat busy, you just almost feel like you are in your own cocoon.  It's a great course.

Played Greystone yesterday for the first time. Can't believe its taken me 8 years of living here to get out there. its a solid 40 mins from me, but so is Hermitage so yeah.

$45 weekday rate is a steal. Outside of a couple holes, that is a great track for the money. I will be making the trek out there again.
