It is interesting how close in points Perez and Hulkenberg (232 v 218) were at Force India.

But Perez was able to get 3 podiums.

As someone else pointed out, Checo is great in a mid field car, but not great in a good one. Swap him and Yuki and he will score more points.

So they replaced everything at FP1, and still had to retire him prior to the GP because of a mechanical issue??

Well...I suppose the glass half full would be that they retired the car on the formation lap and not the final lap of the GP.  That's 52 less laps of engine wear...so basically fresh engine components for the next GP without a grid penalty...LOL.

Not sure if Gasly had enough pace to score points, but certainly the weather changes would have provided opportunities.

Maybe the best strategy move Alpine has made all year.

Hungary up next and likely another 2 stop race.  Would love to see Piastri put it together this weekend to get yet another race winner this year.

There are 5 legit drivers who can contend for pole and the race win between Max, Mercedes, and McLaren.  I have no clue how qualifying or the race will play out.  I do have a feeling though that Perez will continue to struggle.  Riccardo will be interesting to watch in how he performs.  I also don't see the Ferrari's making any significant impact on this race as they have rolled back some of their prior upgrades that haven't worked.

It would be cool to see him go to Audi.

That said, I can see Aston Martin or Williams.

I can also see him semi-retiring, popping up as a consultant like Lauda did eventually perhaps.  Seems like he could probably use a sabbatical.

Aston Martin are pretty much the only team that can afford him. Williams can barely afford to offer Sainz a decent salary and you know Newey is at least double that. The issue is even having Newey on your side, you still have to motivate the Aston Martin nepo baby. 🤣

Williams would be a passion project, as Newey is already a rich man. AM would be, perhaps, to further his commercial footprint apart from F1.

Yeah, Lance isn't any kind of a great driver and not as complete as Checo.  But isn't he the last driver to podium for Williams?  Lance can be fast in a fast car, he just isn't good at the parts that go along with being a successful F1 driver--defending, race management, track awareness to name a few.

If AM does land Newey, Lawrence may have to kick lance up the ladder to be an executive.  Or something that doesn't involve being on the F1 team.

He really wants to work on more road cars and he won't get that at Williams. He's already built one road car at AM that sold out immediately. It's like printing $3M checks.

Yes, he would have to see a willingness in Williams to change IMO.  To their financial state, I think they could draw big ticket sponsors by bringing in Newey.  He would have to be given an ownership stake, though

Isn't the car Red Bull just unveiled also a Newey project?  How has Mercedes not already signed him?  Toto can't be that frugal, right?

The RB17 looks insane. There is supposed to be a road legal version coming, too.

Williams would never be able to fund a hypercar project like that and that seems to be the focus.

To clarify—I think it needs to be sold to another owner/entity who can supply their own with power units.

Williams was an amazing team and the fact it was a family owned business was incredible. The idea that Red Bull, an energy drink company is now building its own F1 engines makes the idea of a family being able to compete just out of the question.

Maybe if Williams sold to Andretti, but I would rather see Haas sold because Gene is the worst owner.

Gene also needs to sell his team.  Selling to Andretti makes so much sense on paper, but to my understanding several other of the longtime Indy owners really despise one another.

i admire Claire for attempting to carry on her family business, but to sell it and still allow it to be called Williams is a shame.

That was a great quali, wow. McLaren obviously looking fast, Sainz still showing pace, Mercedes kinda fell off at the end. Tomorrow should be a good scrap.

Should have been the happiest day for McLaren in a decade, but their strategists ruined it.

I said it last year, McLaren has the best pair on the grid. If they can work out the car and strategy, they will be double champions. If Red Bull sign Sainz, then I would say RB has the best pair. But until then, it's McLaren's race to lose.

Can Oscar really celebrate that win, though? It was the team that decided to undercut Hamilton, he couldn't catch Lando, he was 5 seconds back. If he could have caught him and taken the place back, then sure. But to give up a 5 second gap "for the team" is total BS.

Another good race, but just when I was starting to warm up to Max, he acted like a total little B*tch on the radio. He was wrong in both incidents and Red Bull literally told him he was acting like a child.

My wife said he sounded worse than Hamilton. Makes me wonder if him sim racing on race weekends will stop after this, sounded like he needed sleep.

Depends. If they decided that the car leading at the first round of pit stops was going to get the win if they were 1/2 - then so be it.

IMO it was just a bunch of childish nonsense all the way around yesterday between Max and Lando on the radio. Completely distracted from the race.

If Oscar was gaining on Lando, then fine. I wish Lando would have let him pass with 10 laps to go, then pass him fair and square. But he was 5 seconds back and not closing. Oscar got the start, but Lando was the faster car.

Doesnt matter. They clearly talked about how this is something they discuss at the team meeting. They let Lando take the first pit stop even though it probably should have been Oscar since he was leading - and then Lando was only faster bc he ignored roughly 349 team requests to dial it back and save his tires.

Just completely childish and absurd on Landos part yesterday. He sounded like an absolute baby on the radio - very Max like.
