Worth the switch? Mavrik SZ v. New Epic LS options

Recommended Posts

I’m looking to find a low spin head and have read quite a bit about the old Mavrik Sub Zero head. I’ve also seen the new LS options with the Epic (Max LS, and I think I saw a Speed LS 💎💎💎 listed in the classifieds which got snapped up quickly).

I’m currently gaming a 46” TSi3 and paired with an untipped Ventus Black 6x and seeing spin around 2,700-800. SS anywhere between 114-117mph and working of some swing changed to deliver the club more squarely thru impact. Good drives for me are straight to slight fade. Bad drives are due to early extension faults and are blocks/slices.

I’d love to hear feedback on folks who made the switch…or stayed with their Mavrik SZ.

-Thanks, Todd

I've switched, sort of.  Both a 9 degree models.  I think LS definitely launches lower than the SZ for me.  I do have a slower swing speed than you stated in your post.  The LS has a larger footprint and sounds a little different.  I am still getting used to it and have the SZ in reserve.  Since both drivers use the same adapter it is easy to compare with the same shafts in both to see if the LS will move the SZ for adoption.

Any sense of whether one spins less than the other?  Or do you think given how the heads are the same loft and you're using the same shaft that the lower ball flight is enough of an indication of spin?  Any performence gains from the LS over the SZ (length, forgiveness)?

For me, I find the Max LS spins less than the SZ.  In fact, it may spin too little for me.  I took both to range today and hit balls with both drivers.  I don't find the LS to be more forgiving that the SZ.  The advantage the LS would have over the SZ is the sliding weight in the back of the clubhead.  I you hit the ball consistently on the toe side for example, you can move the weight toward the toe side of the clubhead to get more mass behind the strike.  There are many good players who strike the driver consistently on the toe or heel side of the clubhead face.  So the LS will be a benefit for those players.  Hope that helps.

I switched. Mav SZ to max LS. The Mav spins similar to the max LS. Before my Mav I played a g410 plus and spun the ball 3500+. The Mav got me into the 2500 to 3k window. I was on the launch monitor with the Max LS today, and I did have my lowest spinning drive ever with it on a launch monitor at 2060. But I recently cut do to 44.5” and made swing changes. I was more in the 2300 to 2500 range. The max LS is way easier to hit.  Never enjoyed the feel of the Mav.

every once in a while I would catch one high toe with the Mav and absolutely hit a knuckle bomb. Haven’t caught one like that on the max LS yet

edit- I also early extend and found it’s a confidence issue for me at least. If I know I can get through the ball I don’t extend. If I cannot, I extend. It was one of the main reasons for shortening to 44.5”.

I ran into a good friend today at the range and he was swinging a new Max LS with the 60s MMT shaft.  I've been testing out a MMT shaft in a backup 7iron and really like how it feels - so much so I'm waiting for a set of Callaway TCB's with the MMT 105tx.  In the Max LS the MMT felt really solid - if I went with the MMT I'd give the 60x a try.  Gotta say the feel and sound of this club worked for me, and I did hit a high toe bomb which did surprise me.  I need to spend more time with the Max LS.

If you like blue board shafts, the MMT is a good shaft.

Anyone needs a MMT 60X let me know.  Have a new one with cally adapter from my Max LS that i'm not using.  I would say it has a blueboard feel to it but lower spin.

  • 4 weeks later...

I owned a Mavrik Sub Zero 10.5* last year for a short time. I used the same Tensei Pro Orange shaft that I am using in the Max LS 10.5* and can say with absolute certainty that the Max LS is noticeably more forgiving and launches higher by a good bit. The Sub Zero is designed for better players and you had better button it or you are going to pay a steep penalty. The Max LS is great from the middle of the face and lets me get away with most of my crappy swings.

I got fit into a Mavrik SZ last year and really liked it, for the most part.  Played the stock Rogue White 70X in it - my swing speed is around 112-114mph.  Got the Max LS now after buying one off a buddy who didn't like it, and it's definitely easier to hit playable shots with it.  Considerably more forgiving.  The sub-zero models were designed to drop the spin as low as possible, and it you didn't hit the absolute middle of the face, you could end up with some pretty bad shots.  I played the Rogue White in the Max LS and it was fine.  I got a Ventus Black 7x for it about 2 months ago, and that's made the biggest difference for me, tbh.  Tightest dispersion I've ever had over the course of 8 weeks or so.
