Anyone else done with Hybrids?

BallerNate

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else just totally done with trying to use Hybrids? I tried to make it work with a Callaway Rogue Hybrid 4 (20*) last season and just couldn’t make it work. This season I’ve been trying a Srixon Z H85 Hybrid 3 (19*), and I’m fed up.

I’m Ok hitting them off the Tee, but they are way shorter for me than a 3-Wood, Driving Iron, or 4-iron, and anytime I hit them off the deck it’s always a power fade/slice.

I understand that lots of people love them and swear by them, but it’s an experiment that just isn’t working for me.

Maybe it’s because I’m a sweeper, or maybe it’s that I’m 6’7? Maybe it’s a shaft issue? I don’t know, but whatever it is I feel like giving up on Hybrids.

Sorry for venting…just exhausted with trying to make them work!

Hybrids are not nearly as fun as high lofted woods imo.  That being said, I would focus more on the slice then the hybrids. You can hit a hybrid just fine once you get that sorted.
Being a sweeper is not great imo. Gotta have some steep to your swing especially as a tall guy. Hands wide in the backswing, high at the top. get enough rotation in your hips and avoid moving them to close to the ball during the swing, u will not be coming to far over the top

Sorry they do nothing for your game and are a failure they have turned out to be a blessing for my game.

I really don’t know why I can’t hit them consistently, and am pretty amazed a guys that can hit them and carry 2-3 in their bags. It’s like an alternate Universe that I can see, but can’t touch.

Yeah, I naturally hit a fade that can easily turn into a slice. I can reel it in with pretty much every other club, but for whatever reason I can’t control it with the Hybrid.

Haha…I’ve never actually hit a 5-Wood or 7-Wood, but I should absolutely try. My 3-Wood is definitely my go-to for a lot of situations and is traditionally one of the best clubs I hit though.

I have only started trying since last summer. The Nike hybrids I got were pretty good. The Adams I got was meh, I liked my Lazrus and the TM M4.

But right now I have the GAPR Lo and Mid I am trying to decide if I like one vs the other. I really like the looks of them.

Yeah, I think that’s probably my next experiment. Either the GAPR Mid, SIM DHY, or a 5-Wood. Haven’t tried any of the 3 though, so not sure which would be the best Plan B.

I hit my 5 wood pretty well, but I needed something between it and my 4 iron (220ish). Right now In leaning towards the Mid turned up to 20.5. I think that will give me the flight and distance I'm looking for.

In the last year or so I just started to rely on hybrids. Prior to that I gave the Tour Edge ironwoods a try at the top of my bag, since I could not hit my 3 or 4 iron with any confidence. Though I am still hit or miss with my hybrid shots they still manage to advance the ball far enough for me to make it worth the effort. Although I also carry a seven wood "just in case".

As ugly as they are you may want to consider an ironwood or the Cleveland Launcher type irons, which are essentially the same thing. They are a little easier (IMO) to hit than hybrids.

different strokes - literally. My F9 3H is one of my best clubs, can hit it from a bad lie, half-swing punch from under trees, or off the tee. Just picked up a 5H to mess with, but also have a 3W that is well-behaved along with a 7W. Kind of an odd assortment but they work for me so far and I like the options. Ymmv.

Tried hybrids for 5-6 years before I finally gave up.  Depending on the day, use the long irons or a 5 wood.  Much more reliable for both distance and accuracy.  I am a sweeper of the ball.  Hybrids were a hook machine the majority of the time.

I’m only in Year 2 of the experiment, but for me it’s a slice machine and just don’t think it’s worth the effort for me to try and learn how to hit this 1 club that responds so differently for me than all my other clubs.

I still have mine in the bag.  Don't use it often but it still works.  If I need that high floater into a par 5 from 250 out, I pull it out.  I also use it off the tee from time to time.  I love my UDI though.  It's less prone to hook compared to my hybrid and cuts through the wind better.

You stated pretty much what made me finally quit.  Could hit the 3 & 4 irons with a nice smooth swing & be in the neighborhood of where I wanted to go.  Finally added a 2 iron & spent close to the last 2 of the 6 years convincing myself to never ever swing another hybrid.

Yeah, I don’t blame anyone for using a Hybrid. I just look at you guys like mystical unicorns that I can’t relate to though! 🤣

Did you test your UDI vs a DHY? Do you have a UDI 2 or 3?

Gotta find the right one for YOU. I had tried TM rescue, Titleist, Callaway, TM burner, Nike CPR, Ping G5, plus others and could not hit any of them if my life depended on it. I kept searching because as bad as I hit those I hit FW woods even worse. Stumbled on a really good deal for Ping G15 hybrids so bought them because I knew I could flip them easily if they didn’t work out. One of the best finds of my entire history of buying clubs. For me they flat out work. I kept the 17 and 20 both of which fit perfectly at the top of my bag between 4 iron and driver. I’ve also learned to flight them (especially the 17). They are so versatile for me and I couldn’t imagine playing successfully without them. I’d say do what you need to do to fill that slot in your bag now but don’t entirely dismiss hybrids because they right one hasn’t found it’s’ way to you yet.

See and that’s fantastic that you found an awesome fit. But at the same time it kind of proves my point about how difficult they are…why would you have to try 6+ of any club before being able to find one that finally works?

If you hit the 3W well, you could always insert a 5W or 7W in place of the hybrid.

I'm with ya ... I'm 6-5 and a sweeper, and I finally threw in the towel.

I tried everything from everybody. I even tried steel shafts. And a 14 degree hybrid. I had the most success with Adams, but it was limited. All the faces seemed really closed to me, even the ones that were supposed to be open. And when I did hit them well, they flew about the same distance as my 5 iron.

Good news ... when I went back to long irons, I discovered a fantastic 3-iron from Titleist almost straight away and am liking it. Killing it off the tee. I"d like to get more distance off the ground, but I can work it and have confidence it in, so I consider it a win.

Yup…exactly, just can’t get the Hybrid longer than a 4 or 5-iron unless it’s off the Tee, and way too often it’s a power fade/slice. Just feels like there’s a better way to fill that 19* slot in my bag.

I'm the exact opposite of you BallerNate. Absolutely love my hybrids but have somewhere along the way lost the ability to hit my 3/4 wood except off the tee. I do have a steep AOA and take a divot even with my hybrids so there may be something in that.
