S62 or Apple Watch

Hi all,

 

Recently my wife got me a S62 for Father’s Day and I already have an Apple Watch. I never use any gps for golf before. Silly me, I didn’t even know it is possible. Is there any reason to use a S62 instead of Apple Watch or the other way around. I mostly look for yardage and auto shot tracking. I use Apple Watch for almost everything. I know some apps will have subscription to it. But that is ok. If it is similar, I rather ask my wife to return it and use the money for more golf.

I really like all the Garmin products and functionality but the s62 is definitely overkill if you only end up wearing it on the course.   Whether you can find a good app for the apple watch I can't help you with.  But if not (or you'd just rather save the battery usage on the apple watch),  one of the less expensive garmin watches like the s20 would likely be a much better fit.

I'm really happy with the Golf Pad GPS app. It pairs with my Samsung Galaxy Active 2 watch. I can track shots and putts right from my watch. It records detailed stats that have been helpful for me so far. $20 annual subscription. Well worth it IMO. Rarely have to use my phone unless I need to correct an error for a particular hole or something. Not sure what all watches it works with, but something worth checking out.

I have had both. My previous AW was a series 3. I purchased the S62 in 2020 and was a huge fan. It is a fantastic device. The shot tracking is very good. There are a few quirks getting to work with the phone and it isn't nearly as smooth integration but it sufficed. Earlier this year I did get a series 6 AW again. I had purchased a lifetime membership to Golfshot so I thought I would try it and see if it would allow me to sell my S62. I was amazed at the accuracy and speed. I took both on my course on a practice day and compared. They were identical. I am not sure if the GPS on the newer AW had improved or Golfshot had improved. Maybe it was both. It allowed me to sell the Garmin and where a single watch all the time. I get through a round of golf on the new AW and have about 28% battery left. You'll have to charge every night of course. Also Golfshot just added shot tracking. I haven't set it up in detail because I do not use it but I do use it for drives to see how far I hit them. Needless to say, for my use, I much prefer the AW due to integration with my phone. Garmin products are great as well so its a tough choice. Just have to weigh your preferences.

Had an S40, bought an Apple Watch to pair with Arccos app/sensors.  Worked okay, but not a seamless as the S40, and I found myself distracted by the tech during a round.

 

Upgraded to the S62, and couldn’t be happier. Tracking, better graphics than S40, bigger face, looooong battery life (and I have the brightness set at 80%!).  I love it. 
 

Like mentioned above, I only wear it for golf and all the bells and whistles are definitely overkill…but it is by far my favorite that I’ve used. 
 

PS. I have a set of Arccos sensors (including an unopened SuperStroke kit), and a Nike Apple Watch SE available, worn 5 times … PM if interested.

I have had Garmin S20 since they came out and it's dying (battery life is about dead and need a new band).  Am debating between S40/60/62 and Apple watch.  I do wear the S20 every day, and get by fine, but would probably use some of the additional AW functionality.  Downside of AW watch is I have a company paid cell plan, and not sure I can add the mobile function, but that's not a huge deal as I've been without it all along.

 

Leaning towards Garmin unless anyone can convince otherwise?  Sorry to threadjack VPGolf1

So I had the same decision to make and settled on the S60. I think it basically came down to if I wanted to prioritize golf functionality or every other functionality. The Garmin watches do golf VERY well. But as far as a smart watch goes, its rudimentary. An apple watch can do Golf GPS but thats not what it was made for.

Both the Garmin S62 and Apple Watch 7 have great golf features such as slope and virtual caddie. However, if you want to use the more advanced golf features with the Apple Watch 7, you will have to pay a monthly fee for the golf app that you will have to install. On the other hand, with the S62, these features are already built-in to the watch and free forever.

 

The downside of the Garmin S62 is that you cannot use it to make phone calls and it has no music storage. Also it does not have the advanced running or cycling features of the Apple Watch.

I just bought an S62 and have been very impressed. My original intention was to use it for golf features only, but now I'm counting steps, keeping an eye on stress levels, and tracking my sleep quality. I even did a quick jog to see how the heart rate and tracking features worked. I plan to pull my bike out of the garage and give it a shot too. Oh...and I connected the watch to the myfitnesspal app which I use to track calories so it's pretty cool to see in real-time calories in/out to ensure my diet stays on point. The Garmin Connect app is pretty cool, and synching is seamless. Intentionally, I did not setup phone notifications. The last thing I want is more integration into messages, calls, texts, etc. I have never owned an Apple watch, I'm not even a watch guy, but am loving the S62 so far.

I only wear my S62 on the course. I’m retired, so I rarely wear a watch any longer. As a golf device, the S62 is fantastic. My primary use is distance measurements (to greens, hazards, etc.), club tracking (it will record each shot based on sensing contact with the ball) and keeping score. Reviewing each shot afterwards via the Connect app is nice, which is also where you can see club stats, like average distance.

 

I wasn’t even aware that AW could do some of the things discussed in this threshold.

I've had the S62 for a while now and really enjoy both the golf features and the health app features. The hole-by-hole ShotLink style post round reviews have been cool to see and make entering my rounds into DECADE much easier.

It will be interesting to see how the new Apple Watch Ultra operates as a golf watch. I love my S62 but would love it more if it had more smart watch functionality. The Ultra has better battery life than the regular AW, but still pales in comparison to S62.

I'm really happy with the Apple Watch and the Arccos app.  It was just ok a couple years ago, but I feel like the updates they have made recently made it a much smoother experience.

Anyone have any idea if the NEW Apple Watch SE works better with golf GPS apps than before. Haven't done any research for awhile but pretty sure the SE didn't really work and you needed a Series 7 for full shot tracking and all features from most of the apps.

Loving the s62 great stars and info and I like the virtual caddy good enough for 2-3 rounds.  I only wear a watch when I golf

I recently purchased an S62 to replace my Apple Watch with Arccos.  After 3 rounds the S62 will be returned.  Didn’t see any real feature/benefit over my existing Apple Watch and Arccos use compelling enough to switch.  Sure the S62 has a few more features, but for my game and usage for getting front, middle, and back yardages with plays like numbers no need to switch. Will continue to use Arccos link with my Apple watch.
