Brand new Prov1x bought directly from amazon w/ blemishes?

MillerLowLife

Recommended Posts

I was in a crunch for more balls for a weekend tournament and decided to buy a case of ProV1x's off amazon with a couple other items.

Seems like almost every ball doesn't have a perfectly smooth exterior surface. Many of them have either super small nicks/blemishes or almost a scuff. Is this normal? Figured I might return them and buy my usual Snell directly from the retailer if this isn't.

I just bought a 6 dozen lot of TP5 practice balls & some of them have the tiny “nubbins” that is visible in your photos. They are almost imperceptible imperfections that I’m happy to accept for less than half the price of retail, but tbh, those look a little like they they should be stamped & sold as “practice “

I got mine from Amazon as well and 2 of the 3 balls in the one sleeve I looked at had the same thing 1 ball looked smooth.

So yea, not sure if it's the norm these days. Been a while since I bought them but I am considering sending them back as a couple of them seem like little tiny cuts in them. For $50 a dozen, they IMO shouldn't be that way.

**EDIT**

Looked at a second sleeve and same thing, 2 of the 3 had the same imperfections and one was ok.

And as an FYI, I got the exact same ProV1x High Numbers as you.

**EDIT 2**

Just checked the rest of them and most have some type of IMO significant(for a $50/dozen batch) imperfection. a couple of them looked like micro cuts in them, one looked like it had a small piece of debris under the coating. Going to return to Amazon and just head to my local Dick's and try a dozen from there. I'm thinking this must be a bad batch of the high number Pro V1x's that Amazon got because I can't imagine them all being like this.

I've played through a *lot* of Pro V1x's over the years. So far, IIRC I've encountered one ball that I considered to have a genuine defect in the cover or paint kind of like one of the balls in the pictures above. That's not counting the mold registration pin marks that are visible on most Titleist balls if you look closely enough.

That doesn't mean, of course, that Titleist can't have shipped out a messed-up batch of balls that somehow escaped the Q/C checks. If so they will certainly make good on them when you let them know. Even a five or six sigma process doesn't mean bad products are literally impossible.

But a couple of the photos look almost like balls that have been hit before. Being sourced from Amazon I do think there's a non-negligible chance that someone at some point slipped in some used or damaged balls to be sold in regular retail packaging. Not that you owe Titleist anything but I reckon they might want to know about and possibly even track down the particular lot number or batch number.

P.S. I did one time several years ago get a dozen non-Titleist balls from Amazon which, when they arrived, were obviously not brand new balls. Even the sleeves were a little beat up and some of the balls had obviously been hit. I returned them to Amazon for a refund, naturally.

Yeah, I just can’t recall seeing these sort of imperfections on Srixon or Snell and I’ve bought them for years. Seems odd that this would be a standard for Titleist so I chalk it up to Amazon shenanigans before anything else. I’m going to return mine and never order off there again. I’ve bought snell directly from them twice for shipping but they are not charge $50 a case like ProV1’s which is hilarious.

I’ve gone through a few boxes this season and last, but haven’t noticed anything like that on the brand new balls. My purchases have been through Titleist direct, local Golf Galaxy or the pro shop at my club.

According to the other site, Titleist make so few bad balls that none showed up in a random sample of three dozen. That’s not the same as perfect, nothing made by the hand of man is perfect.

Over $4/ball.

IMO, they'd best be perfect or they go back.

Unless its just too much bother. The imperfections are noticeable, but I'm not certain they would affect performance that much.

Yeah, if they were $1/ball KIRKLANDS I'd probably let a couple iffy looking ones slide. Maybe.

Not at $4/ball. They have to be perfect.

I've seen plenty of balls over the years with those types of blemishes, not just Titleist.  I haven't really noticed a significant performance drop off from the blemishes.  Amazon and especially ebay can be dicey at times with product.  I once received a box of proV1x balls from ebay that were counterfeit.  The cover was like an old top flite and the lettering was totally off.  I called the seller out on it and he immediately refunded me, no questions asked.  Buyer beware, that's for sure.

I even checked a box in a pro shop yesterday. I wasn’t seeing a sinhle golf ball with any of these blemishes. Seems highly unlikely to receive a whole box of them.

The 4 photos above do not bother me, except the third photo, number 7 ball. There is some pollution near "7".

If you check Pro V under stronger light, you can find most balls, if not every ball, have such "small round nicks". That should be from the support needles in the coating process. If you find one, there must be others on the same ball.

But for bigger blemishes posted by Chuck_IV, that is like a foreign flash, not needle hole, which is unacceptable.

edit: When I open a new sleeve, just have a very quick check, maybe less than 2 seconds per ball, under normal light, to see if there is any major defect. If under strong light and turn the ball slowly, most of my golf balls have certain imperfections, but I believe these imperfections do not affect performance.

The last time I mentioned Titleist defects here, I got hammered....I couldn't help that a guy cut a dozen new balls open and they were off centered. Kind of the same thing everyone trashed Callaway about, but I guess we can't say that about Titleist. No way that all those balls were hit and cleaned up that perfect. Those are manufacturing mistakes plain and simple. For a company to take the time to find enough high numbered Pro Vs, make sure they are near perfect then rebox is just not worth the effort of making an extra $10 per dozen. Manufacturing companies make mistakes. These new cut open Pro Vs with off center cores are a prime example. Those are probably the exception but it does happen.

I'll also add that I bought my brother 4 dz during their yearly sale and I checked one sleeve when they arrived and didn't see anything of the sort and looked mint. I haven't heard anything form him either but I'll probably check more sleeves next time we get out. Not knocking the manufacturing process but all things are not equal when you consider they came from Amazon.

Is it possible that Titleist would sell balls to Amazon at a discounted rate because they didn't meet quality standards?

No, $50 which I dont believe is reduced unless you buy from a proshop lol. The seller was direct from Amazon as well. Says they were made at the Titleist ball plant 3, USA.

If I'd have seen multiple occurrences of these really slight blemishes on pretty much every ball in the batch I'd probably send them back.

2 or 3 single dots/blames (NOT true "cuts") examples in the dozen, maybe even a half dozen examples ? No way.

*I* am far more likely to make a much larger difference in the quality of my golf shot than these small blemishes ever could. But there's a (performance) reason I picked these balls in the first place. These slight blems ain't making me change.

IF I was to see more examples in more dozens as I kept playing them and the ball didn't seem to be working for me any more, I might look at another ball as I'd probably begin to think the blems might be just the tip of the iceberg.

Meanwhile, up to you coffee.gif

Amazon is full of negative reviews about the quality of balls bought on there. You may have to sift through all the fake 5 star reviews to get to them, but they are definitely there.

Moral of the story is don't buy golf balls off of Amazon. If you're in that big of a time crunch, just buy them from the pro shop before your round. I've yet to see a pro shop that didn't have at least a few sleeves of ProV1 / ProV1x in stock.

So just got my dozen of the same Pro V1x High Numbers from Dick's Sporting Goods. After checking every ball, only ONE(1) had a tiny nub along the lines, but smaller, of what MillerLowLife's last photo shows. Otherwise, all the rest of the balls looked and felt perfect.

Definitely a bad(or used) batch from Amazon. I did notice that the ones I got from Amazon had round clear stickers securing the top to bottom of the box(had to cut them to get it open), while the dozen I got from Dick's didn't have that and the lid wasn't secured to the bottom at all. Not sure if that's a signal to something strange or just what Amazon requires for their shipping.
