Cobra King Speed Zone Extreme Driver?

garyt

Recommended Posts

I played the Matte/white red trim 10.5 in standard with a heavier rear weight (14grams mainly for swing weighting) for half a season and found it to be very forgiving with tour length (44.5") and an Accra TZ6 M4 shaft.  Stable and consistent...but lost out to the SIM2MAX Tensei AV Raw 65S and a Diamana ZF and PXG Proto+ w Ventus Velo Red 6S respectively.  I think was more about the set up look for me than anything else. Was a little down on length vs those two as well. When hit perfectly I would say its 10yards shorter than the 2MAX and Proto+ which are pretty close to identical in terms of forgiveness and length.  Hope this helps and good luck.

Have one on the way, just wondering what your thoughts on it are? I've googled old reviews but seems everybody loves a club when they first get it yet a year later they're  not playing it anymore. Anybody still playing this?

With drivers, the COR has been at the limit for years. So what will increase your distance is the extent to which you generate swing speed with the driver which transfers to ball speed, coupled with launch angle and spin rates.  I have played a Fly Z+ for six plus years because the shaft was dialed in such that fitters for six years haven't been able to come up with anything better.  In fact, I tested several driver and shaft combination of the 2020 drivers in January including Callaway, Ping, and Titleist, and the six year old Cobra could not be beat by the new clubs.

Get fit for the proper shaft, and you will be happy.  Cobra drivers are equal to any of the other name drivers.

I had one last season, one of the best drivers I ever played. It was just so forgiving and consistent. However, I played it with a really tip stiff shaft (3/4" tipped smoke green). That combo knocked spin down on it and man was it a sneaky bomber. I actually had to loft it up to 10* with that shaft. I hit some of my career best drives on a handful of holes with it, and misses were really good in general.

What I really liked is it launched more consistent than any driver I've ever used. It hit the same window every time no matter the swing so long as it was somewhat decent. Almost all of my other drivers I'd have differences in peak height even on good strikes, this thing made my launch look like a robot.

Only reason I moved on from it was that I was tired of the feel of the smoke green and didn't want to go shaft hunting for it. I just saw $$ trying to chase something else down. TSi2 came out so I chased the little bit of extra ballspeed with it. Even though the TSi2 is the forgiving model, it's just not on the level of the Cobra.

Bottom line, if you can get it dialed in with the right shaft to get your launch window and spin where they need to be for your swing, then that driver will be awesome for you. It's standard deviation on pretty much all numbers is just stupid good.

Even now I see myself starting to look at this model again or maybe the Radspeed XB haha.

I had one for a short time as a Cobra fan but unfortunately the shaft combo didn't work for me and I ended up hitting straight balloons. I will agree that it was the most forgiving driver I have ever tried. No matter where I hit on the face, straight balloon all around the same distance.

If I had gotten fitted for the Xtreme, I'm sure I would have had much better results.

I was one who loved it, but I am now playing/trying a TSi2.  I am searching for yards and I am just shorter than I wanted to be with this head vs others, it is very forgiving.

I have one and don't really love it. It's the 12 degree at 44,5" and a Helium Black 5. For starters: the sound and feel is very harsh/metallic and it's very loud. Second: for me it tends to fade or even slice, weirdly enough more so if I loft it up. I'm sure this is me, something about the way the club lines up that makes me mess it up. However, I have lofted it down 1 degree and put it in the draw setting and this has helped quite a bit. One thing I think I am going to do is increase the interchangeable weight to 14g instead of the stock 6, because this doesn't feel completely right to me, perhaps because of the shorter shaft.

All that being said, it does fly a long way, and now that I have the setting dialed in, it's okay. However, my expectations were higher given the rave reviews.

I have a 9 degree with the matte black crown and I love it, been in the bag longer than almost anything else lol. It’s so forgiving on mishits, especially out on the toe which tends to be my miss.

Another thing to point out, the head design of the 9 and the 10.5 and up is slightly different if I recall. Same look but the weighting is different. The CG on the 9 is a little lower and little further back. I also found the head to be slightly fade biased, but that could have been my setup.

  • 1 month later...

This bad boy SZ EX is back in my bag after a lengthy range session with tweaks and a little hot melt.  I forgot how easy and forgiving this thing is! I had one for a little while when it came out and sold it and then when the prices dropped picked up another due to the hi MOI especially in the tour length.  Anyway super excited to have this done once again ha!

I got horny for the Cobra hype last March. It was right at the beginning of the pandemic and I bought it without being able to hit it.

My mistake. It was decent, but not as good as the G400 Max i sold to buy it.  (Neither was the G410 Plus i bought to replace it).

i got the tour length as i always loved shorter drivers. But it just was a ‘meh’ combo for me.  The Ping was a better fit for me.  I should have hit it outside and made sure it was fit for me.

It’s a good head. Just don’t think the shaft was a good fit.

At the price point, I’d still give it a look today if i was in the market. I’ve been a long time Ping guy, but they have priced me out of the market.

I played for 1.5 seasons.  I liked it, very consistent and forgiving. Then, on a whom I bought a Sim2 Max.  The Cobra hasn't seen the light of day since.  Sim2 Max is 10-15 yards longer and is more forgiving.

For sure that 1/10 big balls perfect strike several recent drivers are a longer but in terms of forgiveness with lower than equator strikes, the SZX is tops for me in my testing. It’s not even close. Never has my miss been a straight ball! Love this SZX with my TZ6 shaft at tour length. Top two best combos I’ve bagged in the last 5 years for sure.

I had the Extreme Camo LIMITED EDITION  on order as I'm returning it as soon as it arrives. I decided to go with the RADSPEED XB Palm Tree Crew Limited edition. Love the looks plus the Speeder Evolution VII shaft is the real deal. Not expecting to pick up any extra yards just want a fairway finder that will play as good as it looks.

That shaft and head look amazing. I’m sure the performance will be there. Always has been the last several years with the cobra heads and for a lot longer with the Fuji Evo line. This is just another evolution “pun” intended. Share some pics when she is in.

I am still loving my SZX with the TZ6 shaft. Just pure butter

Loved mine. Sold it to a buddy to buy a Radspeed and regret it every second I golf. Got rid of the Radspeed.

What was wrong with the Radspeed? I would think it’s maybe a little lower spin with the forward radial waiting but couldn’t be much different

Just arrived today as it's raining and calling for rain all week. I will try later to get out some pictures as WOW! what an awesome looking driver. What does everyone think of the adjustment on the Extreme as I have the 10.5* and have it adjusted to -1.0 Draw. Is there really a noticeable difference in spin and ball flight with this adjustment design?

In my experience in playing several rounds now and adjusting on warm ups and range to get feedback, the loft sleeve definitely plays with flights and start lines.  I have the 10.5 as well and love the flattest setting (usually open a touch) and the standard for me is optimal for constant strikes center to slightly toe. When I go with the draw setting's I defiantly get pulls to straight. The Draw settings definitely change the lie angle up if thats required for your start lines and flights.

I also added a 12gram weight (reduced from the tour length rear 14gram weight) with this 44.5" Accra TZ6 shaft to be D5 on my scale.  Lets me release it a little better and feeling like the stability is pretty damn perfect.  Loving this head for sure and will be my gamer for the foreseeable future no question.

Pictures really don't do this Driver justice. Out of all the Limited Editions I liked this one the best as the Speeder shaft option made the decision easy

I couldn't resist as I was so anxious to play as I had this driver for 2 days and couldn't get out because of the rain. This Driver is super easy to hit and it flies with a soft impact which gives you a feeling that you knew you hit it well. My 1st hole was a tricky par 4 only 247 yds so I used my 5 wood to find the fairway and walked off with a par. Then I had a  group of 4 people who allowed me to go thru on a par 5 as I said don't be laughing as I said this club has never touched a golf ball. I almost went to the range but my time was limited as I only got 9 holes in.

Anyhow I glad I played due to all the rain we had the last 2 days,  but WOW! I smashed the ball just a pretty and straight 275 yds just as I was hoping too. I told the group that this is my 1st time ever hitting it and they said you better not let the club leave your bag, then asked me what kind of club it was. When I showed them all I heard was positive remarks on how nice it looked and never knew Cobra put out such nice clubs.

I'm a very happy person as it seems to be as long or close to my Epic Max as I had the EPIC loft dialed down to 9.5 and weight in the heel for a draw and kept my RADSPEED XB at 10.5 but in the draw setting. The only thing I might change will be my grip later. I only missed 1 fairway as I was looking directly into the sun as I knew as soon as I hit it but the distance still was good. I guess better late than never as it's been over 10 years since I last owned a Cobra driver. The Speeder shaft has a very nice feel to it as this combo is a winner for me. I tried all the big name drivers and Cobra beats them all.

Maybe as I think the Speeder shaft might help out as it's a perfect match. I haven't had a Cobra driver in 10 years so I don't know about the F9 as I've heard many positive reviews about Cobra drivers.

Played in the rare rain today here in AZ (some good winds too) with mine and LOVE for sure.  I definitely can say SZ and RS are just more evolved than F9.  Im not talking on GCquad or its faster or more forgiving or anything, it just looks nicer with the matte finish especially from the top, the expanded infinity face and top line are much improved from F9...the rest F9 was a big leap for Cobra drivers and the SZ RS are just evolutions adding to their benefit.
