Wisconsin Classic Woods & Blades Fall Outing?

Any interest of getting together this fall?

 

Now that my health problems seem to be behind me (knocks on wood (Spalding Executive Driver)) and going into semi-retirement next year, I thought I might try to revive this.

 

So, any vintage golfers in Wisconsin interested? Anyone not yet a vintage golfer who wants to try it? Reply here and we'll see what happens.

I'm in Will County, IL but if the times lined up right I'd be willing to make a drive up as well. How far North into Wisconsin we talking?

I'm probably going to be the farthest north in Sheboygan County, so about half way between would work for me. It would be great if we could find an older course with lots of tee choices. Something from the 1920's. Something interesting.

Time commitment: with driving and lunch, it will be an all day thing. 

Price: I'd like to keep it as low as possible.

I was thinking that if we had one in Fall, and one in Spring, that would be cool.)

We'll need to pick 2 dates this fall in case of inclement weather.

So far we have 2 from Illinois and one from Wisconsin. Need another Badger for a match play contest between the States. It would be more fun, I think, to do something different at an outing like match play. You only take half as many shots in an alternating shot format so it makes 18 more doable for guys like me. Something to think about.

I’m across the border a bit in Northbrook.  I meet a friend at Spring Valley CC for a monthly round of vintage golf.  We both might be in.

That certainly would be a good location. I'm about 2 hours north. So far that's 5. Need 3 more for 2 foursomes. Any Wisconsinites?

Looks good to me. I am going to post a couple of sand wedges tonight. One I know is from the early 1970's, but I'm not sure if it qualifies as a cavity back or not. My blades will all be single irons from different sets, and my woods will be mixed as well. All thrift store finds. That is one nice looking club. Where did you acquire it?

   My girlfriend gave me the set, they had been left at her house quite some time ago.  I have a 8802 putter and will try and pick up some persimmons .

@jplroper I've got a few persimmon woods I've been planning on selling for some time now, just haven't gotten around to listing them. I need to thin the herd now that the baby took over my former man cave. I know the hunt can sometimes be half the fun, but if you're interested I've got 50's Macgregor's, 70's Penna's, and 80's-90's Cleveland Classics I'll be offloading. Let me know what you're looking for and I may be able to offer some assistance.

Giving this thread a kick. Those October dates listed by Tumbleweed_1968 (10/9, 10/10, 10/16, or 10/17) all work for me. And so does Spring Valley, but I could go farther north (from Wauconda IL) if it would increase the turnout.

Look's like a fun event!  To far to drive for the Wisconsin event. There are several in cahoots for a group going out in the PNW in late OCT.

Anyone interested in reviving the Wisconsin Classic Woods and Blades?

 

Now that I'm retired, and fully recovered from my previous injury, and fully vintage, I thought it might be fun to try for an outing sometime in the future. 

 

I'm about 30 minutes north of Milwaukee, so I could play just about anywhere south to the state line.

 

If your interested, reply here or pm me. We'll see where this goes.

About 8 of us played a course in Beaver Dam, WI about 8-10 years ago. Did anybody here participate in that event?

I did. It's Doug. Changed my screen name. I'm retired now and feeling a ton better than I did back then. Less weight, fewer injuries.

 

I'd like to see another outing either this August - October, or next spring.

 

Maybe the last two weeks in August, or first week in September. Then any time after September 22 until the snow flies.

 

Someplace historic maybe? A course from the 1920s perhaps? Ideas?

   Honestly I haven't looked into the subject enough to know what I should be looking for. I've always been a fan of Titleist though.

I highly recommend getting some inexpensive Wilson woods, like a laminated 3 or 4 wood, and a couple of blades, like a 6 & 8, and try them first. Most thrift stores have something that will work. 

 

I got started after a lunch conversation with a coworker where we wondered if we could hit them. I went to the local thrift and found Wilson K-28 irons and a few laminated woods. I was hooked.

 

Nice I got used to them, I started looking for persimmon woods and better irons. Found the woods, but nothing I liked better.  Now I'm into Hickory and Pyratone clubs, so....

 

If you find some decent persimmon woods go for it. But none of them should be very expensive. 

 

Stupidly I downsized my blades so I took am looking to replace them. Doh.
