Anyone have a bad score that they're actually proud of?

Recommended Posts

I tried out a new course yesterday and carded a 51 for a 16 over 9 hole score. I lost about 5 balls, my driver was slicing more than it has all season and it was a little shorter than usual.

Now for the reasons I'm proud. As I stated previously it was a new course for me, I felt like I had some good scrambling (for me), made some good course management decisions. I had a few really good shots with my sand wedge in particular and got to repair some ball marks. The kicker, draining about about a 23' putt for bogey on 9.

So, anybody else have a round with a bad score that you're proud of?

Honestly, lots of rounds. Every time you tee it up, it's an opportunity to do something great. Or do something terrible. It's why I love golf so much. Mostly, for the opportunity to hit some cool shots.

But more recently, after not being able to play for over two years, I played nine holes and shot 45. However, it was a glorious, glorious, day. Warm evening sunshine, little wind, and just hitting the ball again!

PS Congrats on the good short game play!

I have 2 tournament rounds in the last couple of years where i shot 45-36 and 44-36. Both times i ended up advancing/qualifying for events based on the back 9, in both cases by 1 shot LOL

The 44/36 round i had cancelled my babysitter for the following day after 9 holes, and then had to call her back 2 hours later haha

My last league night the previous Friday. I drove the ball well but for some reason was hitting irons like it was the first league night. I had 2 birdies though along with a seven and an eight to card a marvelous 51 and handing our match to my opponent. More amazing that I managed a 51 was that I didn’t lose a ball. What a confounding game.

I'm getting better with my game and bad rounds do happen, if I can find a positive in a bad round say like I hit 70% of fairways with my driver or had a bunch of up and downs. That's why I enjoy Arccos I could shoot 100+ but it will find positives in my round.

Yeah, last weekends round at a challenging course.  I won't go into the ailments that helped contribute to less than my best shots, but somehow I managed to muster up enough saving shots for a 79.

My buddy said I should be happy with that score.  I understand his point, except what constitutes a bad or good round is relative to the score each of us normally cards.  Sure, under the circumstances, 79 was good.  Maybe the best part of that round was some recovery shots that saved Par, that I keep reminding myself of, till my rounds this coming wkend.

Played at Pacific Dunes earlier this week. Have never played a links style course before. Had some blow up holes for sure and i didnt fully keep score on all holes, but i made back to back pars on 10 and 11 (both are par 3s). I have never played in wind like that where 130 plays like 180.

I was also smoking some drives (but not by WRX standards) down the middle on the back 9, which was awesome. There was a par 4 that the caddies said was driveable, playing at 345. I was like no way i will get close, probably will hit it like 240. But ended up much closer to the hole than i thought, had a 60 yard 2nd shot.

I shot 76 at Dakota Dunes in what must have been a Canadian event. I shot even on the front and when we made the turn this wall of black rolled in the temperature dropped 20 degrees (it seemed like) I remember putting my rain gear on and still shivering. The wind kicked up something nasty, I felt great shooting 40 on the back nine because lots of guys that played through that didn’t do much better. It was incredible the weather changed that fast

In my second year of playing back in the 1990s, I had a round in which I made an eagle on a par 5 (holed out an 8-iron third shot) and broke not only 110 for the first time, but 100 as well with a 99. Felt like the happiest guy in the world for the rest of that day. Of course I believe I had something like a 112 the next time out.

Shot a 97 from the tips a few weeks back, which I honestly shouldn't be playing from. The guys I got paired up with all walked back and my ego got in the way. Of those 3, only 1 really had the length to play from back there. But all in all they were all great guys to play with and not having a triple digit score from back there, needing a fairway or 5i for pretty much every 2nd shot, made it a pretty good round. No one was behind us until around the 12th hole so there weren't any concerns on my end about holding anyone up.

87 this past Sunday playing with some guys 30 years younger and from 6,730 yds on a Course I never played before. It was a beautiful track up near Gaineville, Fl.. I was cruising along nicely making pars with just trying to get around the greens and hope the short game held up.

Had a few doubles and a snowman to kill the score but still took $10 off the young guns with no strokes, but parred when needed and even birdied a 210 yd Par 3. I was more shocked than anyone to hit the green with 4 wood and for a bit it looked like it was going in, but left me a 5 ft putt.

The first day of a 2-day stroke play in June, I shot a nice 91 as a 9 hdcp on our par 70. I had a ton of 3-putts and generally played like trash, but I stuck to my plan and kept the ball in play and stayed focused enough to finish out the round. Despite the bad score I actually did not lose a ball all day.

Once the nerves wore off, I had a really solid second round the next day with a few birdies and ended up with a respectable finish.

I played Torrey Pine South 1 month before the 2008 US Open. We put our right foot in the rough on the back of every back tee box we could find...course length would be over 7700y from there. The rough was not graduated yet, so it went from fairway to 1st cut straight to 6" of kikuyu. (for the tournament they graduated it from 2" to 4" and blew it down every night with giant blowers on the back of carts.

Literally if you threw a ball 20 feet in front of you in the rough, you had to step on it to find it.  My playing partners from NJ lost 12 balls on the front 9.

I had the BEST day off the tee I have ever had in my life. I could fade/draw on command and EVERY tee shot I hit LANDED in the fairway.  Because of how slopped the course is, a few trickled into the 1st cut or maybe 1-2 feet deep into the rough. I avg'd probably 260y off the tee, on a 7700y course. So lots of mid-long irons into par 4s. Every par 5 was a 3-shot hole for me.

I shot 92! And I am dang proud of that 92, as a ~4 handicap at the time, having played Torrey probably 10 times before that, and breaking 80 a handful of times. My best friend, and Asst. Pro, shot 93. He still talks about how well I played that day. It was a struggle, but it was fun. If I played a yardage more suited to my game, like 6600y, I probably would have shot 76 that day.  There was one of those celebrity rounds there after we played. Only Romo, a 2.2 handi broke 90 and I think they played it closer to 7000 yards maybe "Largely from the black tees".

One of the rounds I'll always remember. First time I played BP Black. Years ago now. Was actually a decent golfer back then - single digit cap. And (don't mean to date myself) was playing with a 380cc driver and Hogan irons. 460s weren't even on the market yet.

Good memories, but I barely broke 100. Couple of blow up holes (when things go bad on that track, they can go really bad).

But weirdly, still felt extremely satisfied with the round.

Shot 86 at Kiawah Ocean Course back in 2019, and it was in 30-40 mph winds. The caddie was giving me wind-adjusted yardages and aiming points, and I felt like I did pretty well executing the shots that day.

I love this topic.  Makes me feel part of a brotherhood.

Years ago I played Dormie Club in Pinehurst on day 4 of a buddies trip and just absolutely lost my game after 3 days of great golf.

I shot a 98 with a single ball.

The course is pretty generous on fairway size, and yet I think I may have hit 4-5 all day.  I spent the whole day in deep natural areas, and just walked right in found my ball and usually whacked it further into the natural area.  I don't even remember spending much time looking, just walked right to my ball like some sort of golf ball finding savant.  Rinse and repeat for 18 holes.  The scary thing is that I putted lights out, it could have been 110 if I putted the way I normally did at the time.

I have 2 balls on my wall.  My hole in one ball, and my 98 ball.

That's really funny - most golfers get that. Your most memorable round often has nothing to do with your lowest round.
