Using air to put Iomic grips on

I have a compressor and the Pure air gun.  I have used it to successfully install Pure and Golf Pride TV grips.  I am thinking about trying a set of Iomic grips.  The Grips4less website suggests that air won't work for Iomic grips but I have heard of people installing them using air.  Has anyone here used compressed air to install Iomic grips?  Any precautions or suggestions for doing it?   Thanks.

I have done it and while it can work, there seems to be a much higher risk with Iomics due to their material. They seem to be much more prone to bubbling/stretching and getting ruined if you use a little too much air. Proceed with caution.

Hey, what do they know? Well, a lot, I suspect, since grips are their business. 🙄

Their business is selling golf grips for a profit.  Doesn't mean they know anything about installing grips.  Their recommendation probably has more to do with liability than anything else.

Last week I blew on a No1 grip, which are similar to Iomic's.

Just use as little pressure as possible, and it should work fine.

It was actually in the Questions section and it was not clear that it was written by Grips4less or by another visitor to the website.  Clearly as one can see from this thread, opinions vary.

Air works sometimes. It's useful for temporary installations and some permanent installations. It's too prone to slippage and often leads to undersize grips. If it were as good as the lazy clubmakers assert, you can bet that the OEMs would be all over it. 😉

Well I wouldn't call myself lazy or a club maker for that matter. But as a painting contractor I will say that I like what works and have no inclination to damage an expensive grip that I decided I didn't like on removal. . I have lots of blue tape and solvents and air compressors in my shop. Haven't had any problems to date, aside from the initial learning curve and teething pains. Heck,I put Winn grips on with air.

Thanks for the heads up on the Iomic grips. I can't wait to put it on an Adila NV reshafted Cobra Fly Z+ driver. Everything is going to be colored green !

I punch several pin holes through the grip, going down and around the length of it.  Does not compromise the grip in any way. This helps prevent any bubbling that can definitely happen with the iomics, because of how sticky they are. 

 

You can also use a small amount of solvent to help it slide on....and not stick, which can lead to bubbling.  Just put a little bit into the end (mouth) of the grip, not a full soak on the entire inside of it.  Obviously you need to give it some time to dry, before hitting any shots with it

I use a q tip and just swipe the inside about 1/2 inch deep. And just go easy with the air. Haven’t blown up a grip since.

 

The pin hole method sounds likes a great idea!

blue painters tape and a little squirt of mineral spirits and you'll be fine.

Beat me to it.  I do the same with multicompound.  A couple little holes and you are golden.  If you want to avoid solvent, a little soapy water can do the trick as well.

I was successful with two Iomic grips and then the 3rd looked like I was blowing up a baloon.  It didnt rupture but the grip was ruined with a permanent bubble.  For reference, it was the 2.3 ixX
