Putter Extension: Great or Sinful?

Hey Team - I’m 6’4” and have been using 35 inch putters for some time, making my eye line almost always over or even a touch outside of the ball. I have to be very conscious of my set-up to get to the “2-3 inches inside the ball” position.

 

Unlike other things, I can extend it by an inch!

 

Would using an extension be 100% “okay” by GolfWRX standards or would having shaft + extension mess with feel and overall aura, where it would be better to replace the entire shaft (shaft only)?

Before GolfWRX I would have extended it and not given a second thought. After GolfWRX, this is a question that deserves keen attention.

I'm sure 99.9% of WRX users wouldn't notice an extension under the grip until they took it off. 

 

If you're going up an inch or whatever fine but anything crazy a new shaft is easier.

As long as it’s installed properly it’ll be just fine. 
 

I still use extensions in wood shafts if I need to.

I've put multiple extensions on my putters and couldn't tell the difference. I've used some bought off amazon and even made some from wood in my shop when I was in a pinch and still couldn't tell. Granted I'm not tuned into slight weight change like a pro is

I’ve extended and shortened a number of putters.  Some I couldn’t tell the difference, and others it was slightly noticeable (sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst, sometimes it might have been in my head).  It’s a very small swing weight change at most so I’d give it a try.  I don’t think it will make any difference if you extend versus change the shaft as far as feel.  Sometimes when the swingweight has felt different I’ve just gone to a slightly lighter or heavier grip to get the feel I want.  Full disclosure: I mess with stuff too much!

I lengthened my putter last year and except for the improvement in my putting, I can’t tell any difference in feel.

Either works. If you want to save the original shaft/grip it is easy enough to pull and install a new shaft. I always buy shorter putters since they typically have heavier head weights, pull the grip and extend the shaft, regrip and good to go. Extensions are super easy to remove of you decide to resell or shorten it back to original.

I do it on almost all putters I buy second hand. 90% of putters are 34/35" I buy and I pull grip and throw extension in it. No big deal at all

Thanks everyone. My 35 Vault Voss is now 36 with a super stroke. Very easy and the golf store even did it in 15 min!

 

Same page in that it is soooo much more easy to find 35 vs. 36.

I turned a 35" into a 41" ... and it feels horrible. Very whippy.

I did that also back when the belly putter was the craze. Didn't work.

Do you think it would be noticeable if you were to put a 1" extension into something like a TPT putter shaft ?

I think feel will increase simply because it's a longer lever, not because of the material of the extension. If you're looking for more feel, go for it.

I recently got a 34" SC Phantom x11 and want to go at least an inch up. What is the longest you guys think is okay? I like the CB feel, so I may get a CB grip and extend maybe 2 inches.

I‘ll do +3“ on a spider next week to make it counterbalanced, not worried at all. And after talking to my putter fitter, I‘m not even gonna glue the extension in to the shaft. Just take one thicker as necessary and sand it down until perfect fit. Tape over it, grip on, and let it roll.

I mess with them all the time. Use archery insert hot glue and put grips on with an air compressor. Change and tweak as you like. Nothing to it.

You could just reshaft ... don't know why, but this feels better to me than adding a couple inches to the existing shaft.

I could, I could also sent back to scotty and have it done fully by them. More thinking with my wallet. I can add a extension myself, or take it to a shop for reshaft. It is a single bend shaft so not conformable doing that myself and throwing off the face balance. If it was a plumbs or something, I would do it myself.

I had a GoLo and had it reshafted with a black single bend and put on a 17 inch grip for a counterbalance. Came out really good - but I didn't feel comfortable doing it myself, and had my "club guy" do it. I couldn't put with it at all, but that user error. It was a disappointing $700 experiment.

The putter is the one club in the bag I would be okay extending just about any length through extensions.

 

the exception might be if I used a really thin rubber grip and it messed with the feeling of the shaft by presenting a seam
