wait, what?

if your children have to apply to college, it’d be a massive impact and something has gone wrong?

am i reading that correctly?

We'll still practice hard and compete, but just days after my daughter got dusted by a field that only included two of the top 10 kids her age in the state it has reinforced that education needs to be more important than anything else.

You are failing to miss one important point.  Your kids are still in elementary school.  My daughter didn't pick up a club until she was a 7th grader and played D1 golf.  What they do at 8,9,10 means nothing.  Comparing your kid to others is a huge mistake.  Pour a cup of popcorn into a kettle and watch how many kernels go unpopped.  Just because they look the same, doesn't mean they are the same.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

You paraphrased my words as a question, leaving out details as you saw fit.

I said, " If my kids have to apply to these schools for undergrad in hopes they will be taken, it would impact my family massively because something has gone very wrong."

When I said "these schools", I meant schools like GA Southern and Nova which I referenced by name the sentence before:

"If GA Southern or Nova doesn't want to recruit my kids because they are home schooled (never mind the fact they would have to improve leaps and bounds for this to happen), I can't say that it would have any impact on our lives."

To be more blunt and to the point, which I thought I was before, if my kids are hoping they get into mid-level academic schools like the named schools (because the couldn't get into more desirable schools on their academic merits) then something has gone wrong with their education process.  If they are being passed up by schools like this for golf because they didn't graduate from a traditional school it will not be a loss.

yeah, i definitely read you right the first time like i thought i did.

that’s a LOT of pressure to hang on your kids heads.

if your kids are in a position to apply to ANY colleges, you should be proud of what they’ve achieved. not upset because it wasn’t the school you thought they should go to.

what if your kids decide that college isn’t even for them? would that be an even more massive disappointment?

i guess i just can’t relate to projecting your own wants and desires that heavily on to your children. let them be kids. let them find their way.

good luck with the whole thing.

First of all, GFYS with all of your judgement.  Did you understand that right the first time—I hope so.

If college isn’t in the cards for them, then they will figure it out and get whatever support they need figuring out a trade.

While I don't agree with some of MB19's premises this quote is a joke. If you are proud of your kid for being able to apply to ANY college you have some really low expectations for your kids academically (you are talking 2.5 GPA and 18-20 ACT/850 SAT). No offense but you better believe I expect WAY more from both of my sons in the classroom than that. From age 5 - 18 school is their profession and everything else is secondary and 2.5 GPA is unacceptable and definitely not an "achievement" in my book.

having high standards and expectations is more than fine, it’s a great thing. i have the same for my son, so i don’t disagree with you there.

my issue was more with the “sky is falling down” attitude MB seemed to have if things didn’t go according to plan.

things don’t always go as we script them in life.  not every kid is harvard material and i really don’t see considering it a “massive letdown” or however he categorized it as fair to a child.

I think at a young age, kids that are home schooled and playing and practicing golf more probably appear to excel younger and faster.  However, I am guessing things will level out as the kids get older and mature mentally and physically (speaking more about girls).  Their golf experience is accelerated at an early age but kids that play less will take longer to gain that experience but gain it eventually.  I think physically and mentally too much golf at a young age is not good for most kids.

You seem to be the one who is projecting here.  The massive letdown would mostly be on the parental end for not doing everything possible to prepare my kids so they can get into their schools/vocation of choice.

Yes, I have very high expectations for my kids—I’m hardly unique in this regard.  That you took exception and are carrying on like this is ridiculous.

carrying on? no, im simply disagreeing.

and mind you, im NOT disagreeing with having high expectations for our children. i’ve already said i’ve got high hopes and expectations for my son.

i disagree first off that going to a certain college, or even to college at all, is the great pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that everyone makes it out to be. the days of needing a college degree to get ahead are long behind us.

the competitiveness of universities and the pressures placed on kids to get there has become ridiculous bordering on unhealthy.

unless someone wants to play a sport or go down a particular career path that requires higher education, college is optional at best.

my high expectations for my kids don’t ride on them getting into a certain school or even going to college at all.

hey, if you felt like i was coming at you or attacking your choices then i apologize. it wasn’t my intention.  there are a million ways to raise children and no one (within reason lol) should feel questioned for how they choose to go about it. your kids are lucky to have parents so invested.

I never named a certain college, or set of colleges, I wanted my kids to attend--that's on you thinking that Harvard was my standard.  The standard my wife and I have in mind is just higher than having my kids hope they get accepted to an undergrad program that is has a lower-than-average standard for admission.

If it happens that my kids go the vocational route, then so be it--but by no means is it the preferred option at this point in time.  While it is true that needing college was never (yes, I said never) a requirement to earn a solid payday, it is also true that if my third-grader son wants to be an engineer (which he does and talks about often) he will have to go to college for it and get good grades to accomplish this.  Serving in the military is also an option, and my daughter speaks openly of her desire to serve.

Getting into a university should be competitive, and kids should learn to compete if they want to get into one and get their degree.  I'm sorry if you have faced some undue pressure regarding college admissions in the past, or have seen such an experience that has traumatized you so much that you feel the need to pontificate on this topic.

Do what you wish with your kids, by all means--I promise not to talk you out of it.

not hardly.  i turned down yale because i thought a full baseball scholarship to georgetown was cooler.   i never even had to deal with admissions 😊

your kids sound like an awesome little dude and lady and i hope their admirable goals pan out.

Kind of sounds like my kid saying he doesn’t need to study so much because you can still make a lot of money without a college degree.
Then he gives me examples of these YouTube influencers or gamers on Twitch.

i know a lot of wealthy people who have both never been on a college campus and have also never heard of twitch.

everyone’s experiences are different and there are a million different paths to take.

college isn’t for everyone, and that’s coming from someone with a bachelor’s, masters, and was halfway to my PhD when i finally said screw this.

With all due respect, giving examples of folks who were once in a generation talent (I.e Woods,Jordan, Johnson) is kinda useless. If my kid had that kind of talent, then sure be a drop out.  BTW: how many golf pros actually graduate from college?   My guess is not many.

Similarly . Gates, Jobs, and Zuckerburg were highly passionate about they wanted to create and were willing to work hard to fulfill their dreams..

Passion and work ethic certainly key in addition to talent. You don’t have to be a world beater though.

I work in technology. The best Oracle DBA and best programmer I know both dropped out of college. They are not famous but both have had successful careers and are well off.  I’m sure we all know people like that.
