Mavrik Irons

JP86

Recommended Posts

Just retired my set. My opinion they did what they were made to do. Long and easy to hit. But with the stronger lofts a seven iron  looks like a seven iron height and arc shape. The only thing that I never seen on any clubs owned was two of the clubs look like the ball left an imprint on a toe hit. I loved them but like the feel of the Mizuno JPX921 Hot Metals made me switch, not as long due to the lofts so I had to adjust. But if you like the lofts on the Mavriks and want even better feel go with the PXG 0311 XP Gen4 or the Gen3s which are closer to the Mavrik cost.
The Mavriks lasted almost 2 seasons in my bag.

I did an iron fitting last week, and while I was warming up and with the Trackman on, there was a Mavrik 7 iron with a Recoil shaft just sitting there, so I hit it several times.  I must say, it was absurdly long and VERY straight.  I have no idea about lofts, etc, but it was REALLY easy to hit.

I asked my fitter about them, and he said that the problem with them now is that Callaway won't customize them at all; I assume that means they are just selling out the existing stock.

Not a long term user. But, got to use them as a rental set. Coming from hybrid irons, I was always afraid to try something traditional. I know around here they are considered SGI's too, lol. They were very easy to hit and something I would consider in the future. Also, the sr shaft was good, not whippy like many sr shafts.

This summer, the details were this: you can ask for customization, but due to production backlog it might mean you don't get your irons, uh, until Thanksgiving.

I wanted two simple things with my Mav MAX irons: up SwWt from D0 to D2, and give me midsize grips. I the song and dance about not creating production delays. As a compromise, I asked for grips loose in the box so I could build them up. Put on three wraps of tape under the Calla generic GolfP Z-Grip, and it ended up not-quite M-size. The arrived last week, have played two rounds so far. More on that later.

I got the MAX irons with the Catalyst 65 R-flex graphite, mainly a move to lighter shafts. In a comparison, the MAX 7i = 30*, while the std Mav 7i = 27*. Despite the higher loft, I was able to hit the MAX irons about a club longer than std Mav. Head designs are completely different, and players need fairly high clubhead speed to launch std Mavs.

Callaway MAVRIK MAX Irons product imagePossible problems:

  • In short irons, MAX high launch could cause trouble in crosswinds.
  • Max family has medallion matrix on back of clubhead, not sure it will readily take any lead tape to increase SwWt.
  • The Mavs are entering normal two-year phase out. This means little or no customization available.

I put the regular Mavrik’s with stiff 75 Project X graphite shafts. They are super forgiving and play about a 1/2 to 1 club longer than the cf16’s with regular recoils they replaced. I really enjoy the feel on a well struck shot with the only drawback being short pitches are hot off the face.

When being fit, I tried the 65 and 75 stock graphite and regular steel. The 65’s were too soft and everything went left. The 75’s gave me 3 mph more clubhead speed with less spin than the r steel. I have not seen any issues stopping the ball on the green, even though I’m a high capper and don’t hit lots of greens in regulation.

Not a Mavrik owner but obviously by the WITB playing all Callaway equipment at the moment.

I’m just not a fan of the in-between year iron cycles that are branded like the driver (XR, Rogue, Mavrik, etc). I’m sure they perform fine and they are cheaper but personally I prefer anything from their Apex or X Forged line. Just better products, naming stays consistent, etc. The others always seemed like they were targeted at someone picking up an entire bag of clubs at Dick’s Sporting Goods

One would think the price should be  dropping if a replacement is due soon after 1st of year. Or, is $799 for 5-AW still a decent price for these?

They have been out for awhile. You would think they would be down to $699 by now. Maybe a sign of costs going up?

Edwin Watts today and hit the standard Mavs with Elevates in regular. Just felt harsh to me.
2. Mav Max with stock ultralight steel offering, felt soft and liked it but was getting too much sidespin. Could work through that though.
3. Big Bertha with 65 gram stiff graphite- meh, really like tyy he e look at address though.

4. Apex with stock Dart regular- super soft and ball was really jumping off club face. Nice sticks here.

5. W/S D9- stock graphite regular flex offering- ball explodes off the face but a really light feeling club, nice though!

6. Apex DCB- believe it had Dart stock regular graphite too- felt harsh to me.
7. Of all these, the Apex is leading the pack for me so far with the D9 a close 2nd!! I’ll go again after I get back from my 28 day hitch on the Mississippi River. Sorry for the long post.

Looking for Mavrik owners and your long term opinion of the irons. How is the polished finish holding up? Anything you are disliking about them? Looking to make a change (playing G30s currently). The last Callaway irons I played were X18s. Might be time for a change? Talk to me! Thanks!!

JP

Not sure if you’re looking for Mavrik Max owners, but I have a set that I was fitted for last November. I’m using them with some Accra iSeries 70i shafts. Looking back now, I wasn’t hitting it well at all and probably would be fit into different shafts (probably heavier) since I came from heavier steel shafts and it took time to get used to these. I know you’re looking at the Mavrik irons, so I’ll focus more on that. I hit a few different heads from Ping, TM, Titleist too. The Ping G710’s and Max’s gave me the best numbers for my swing out of the ones I hit that day. They had the best carry, ball speed, and launch.

It’s almost a year now, so I have put a good amount of rounds on them. The polished finish is okay, but they’re all pretty scratched up. It’s shiny in some areas and pretty heavily scratched on the sole, but that’s expected. I hit the range (mats) at least 3-6 times a month and probably more when I first picked them up. Average 1-2 rounds a week. They don’t look ugly and they don’t bother me at all, but they definitely don’t look like the first time I opened up the box.

I’ve read on reddit some people’s badges falling off, but so far mine have held up fine. I wash my clubs 3-4 times a month and keep them pretty clean while I play. I’m not a big fan of them, but they don’t affect performance and I can live with it.

I think I have pretty much dialed in this setup and have recently hit some other clubs as I’m starting to get the itch for a change. My driver swing speed is ~105 and these Max’s launch pretty high (could be the shafts too) and are pretty forgiving. When I first got them, I was pretty wild and was hitting it all over the face. I really think the significant drop in weight of the shafts messed up my timing, tempo, and overall consistency. Now that I’m used to it and hitting it in the middle the majority of the time, I can compare it to how I was first hitting them and the distances were not very different. I was hitting a lot of toe shots at first and did not suffer significant loss in distance. To me, I feel like the Max’s are very forgiving if you don’t always hit it in the middle of the face.

As I mentioned before, my ballspeed was highest with the Max’s and with the forgiveness I’m getting, I don’t really want to switch them out. I want to see if I should change my shafts to something in the ~90 gram range, but I would prefer to keep the Max’s. If I go through the process of paying for a fitting to test shafts, I might as well test the newer heads and see if any perform better. Unless I see significant gains, I am most likely sticking with the Max’s for a while. I hope that helps.

Trying to gap any traditional wedge combo w/Mavrik due to their crazy lofts was extremely challenging. The darn 5 Iron is the loft of even a modern 3 iron at 21 degrees. The complete Mavrik line was quickly eliminated by Callaway after but one year but I still have the Heavenwood in my bag, & often carry a 5 iron due to the distance off the tee, but decided to pass on a complete set of the irons due to yardage gaps. For what its worth, I had a Callaway sales rep tell me the Mavrik orange color set up was a huge turnoff to many, and really reduced the initial shelf appeal sales most OEM's are looking for w/a new release.
