Removing finish from carbon putter diy

I have a Timeless brand carbon anser style putter that I want to take the paint off and rust. Is there a do it yourself process for removing a paint finish from a carbon putter or am I better off letting a professional handle it?

Post pics some finishes can easily be stripped, if a plating then would have to send off.

Agree with Matt, I think it all depends on the finish. I know the black finish they used on vokey wedges could be removed by coke and steel wool.

I tried to see what the finish is but I think Timeless went out of business, came and went quick.

I'm trying to figure out what this finish is, I think Putter Spa did the finishes on these and it could either be a black ox which can be easily removed or the "Black Jack" finish which is most likely a Cerakote type finish which would be harder to remove as you'd need to media blast it.

Everything that I read refers to this finish as Black ox. What would the best way to bring it to raw?

Quick Google search said acid works. Simple vinegar, muriatic acid or maybe coke would work.

Vinegar would get it super clean. Coke leaves a brownish tint.

None of those work as good as Naval Jelly if it's truly black oxide. I strip black oxide in about 5 minutes with naval jelly.

Even faster and easier is toilet bowl cleaner..the gel stuff. Soak it for like 20-30 seconds and it will come right off. Don't leave it much longer or it can ruin the finish.

CLR will work but will take a much longer time.

I think that the putter has a pvd finish. I talked to a company that refinishes religious items and they had never heard of a pvd finish and didn’t sound to confident about removing the coating. That was kind of disappointing because the putter could have picked up some good “mojo” being in the same settings as objects blessed by a holy man, and it would make for good small talk on the course.

I then sent pictures to an industrial plating company and they said that whatever it is they could remove it for $50 and I can’t argue with that. I am wondering if putter refinishers

do anything speacial to raw carbon to make it rust evenly and what they do to seal the finish. I watched a video and the guy used linseed oil cut with mineral spirits to seal a rusty finish on a rat rod. It ended up with a slightly shiny finish.

There are numerous finished and formulations to help a putter patina. Getting it nicely rusted and patina evenly isnt that easy. You can search around these forums. People have used various household items to do this.
