Vokey SM8 vs Cleveland Tour Rack Wedges

Currently playing Vokey 54* M grind and a 58* D grind but have a little cash to spend (dont tell my wife this) and was thinking about the Cleveland Tour Rack in Mid bounce for both with the heel and toe relief.

 

Can anyone compare these? Playability? Looks (especially the topline) etc.

They're similar in looks but I don't think the heel and toe relief would be necessary with the Tour Rack mid bounce, there's enough relief there and the trailing edge relief comes into play more than it does in the Vokey. Plus the mid bounce 58* plays with less bounce and more versatility, I think, than the D grind.

I've played both in the 58*, and just off the rack, the Zipcore was better for me.  I have some 56* tour rack mids bent to 58* for bounce purposes, and they work well for me.  I have a 48* bent to 49* and a 52* bent to 53*.

 

I won a 58* D grind wedge, and had to take a lot off the back for it to play the way I like it.  The Cleveland also feels a little better to me, but I don't really have any complaints about the SM8 once I took some off of the back.  

 

The 58* D is currently in the bag, but I might go back to the Zipcore Mid soon just to see if I notice much difference during 9 hole rounds in the evenings.  Like mentioned above, I do feel like the Mid in the tour rack has a bit more versatility.  It's a little better for me on tight lies than the D grind.

Interesting to hear that the tour rack mid can be played as stock with nothing being done to it. What about heel relief?

It has some already. I didn’t really have any issues hitting flop shots or off of tight lies with it. It’s really good out of the bunker for me as well.

I had SM8 (well, still have in my spare club bag) and went to tour racks. The tour racks imo are so much nicer to look at. It may be me, but the sm8 look huge behind the ball to me. Plus the feel and the sound of the tour racks are pure bliss to hit.

It's strange, I used to play the 60* Mid with no grind, but I now play the Full Face 60*, with the C grind, and I've had to have a little shaved off the heel side as it was bouncing when opened up on a tight lie. Had the same issue with a Vokey M grind but never had it with the 60* Mid.

Man, you guys are making this decision pretty easy. Does anyone have a side by side pic of vokeys and tour rack showing the club at address? The topline is the deal maker/breaker for me.

The zipcore 52* bent to 53* is on the left and the Black Vokey D grind 58* is on the right. If you want to wait until this evening, I can get a picture of my 56* ben to 58*.  I just didn't have that one in the bag with me.  

 

I stripped the black finish by soaking it in distilled vinegar.

Jah, that would be great! I can wait. I am probably going to look at them in person (well the RTX zipcore) to make a decision on them.

The zipcore 56° bent to 58° is on the left and the SM8 is on the right.

Jah, is it me or does the top line on the TR look a touch bigger than the vokey?

I have a tour rack 60 mid that required extensive grinding to get it to work around the greens how I like.  Now it has a ton of lead tape to compensate.

 

The biggest thing for me is the feel of the Cleveland is very hard and hollow, whereas vokeys tend to be solid and firm.

 

Groove durability has been fantastic, and it's a good looking club, but it'll be replaced by an sm9 next year.

It's a bit bigger than the Vokey, but I personally don't find it off putting in any way.  To my eye, the Zipcore is a little more compact looking when side by side and the leading edge is a bit straighter.

Awesome. I'll take my vokeys to the golf shop and get a look at them side by side and see where it takes me.

I would just check them both out.  Feel is such a subjective thing.  I prefer the feel of the Zipcores, and other won't.  As far as grinding, everyone delivers the ball differently and plays different shots around the green.  The stock mid bounce is fine for me.  I rounded the leading edge a little bit, but other than that, did nothing else to the grind.
