I really enjoy Sweetgrass, and IMO quite a few good par 4's, #4, 5, 8,  13, 14 16, 17.  Understood re #1 but I see #10 as a good hole with the bunkering on both sides + green side, contours of the fairway, and a fairly severe green, there is enough to cause bogey on that hole.  I suspect a lot of guys pounding driver without much concern vs. playing course management.  I'm still not sure what to think about 9 and 18.  They are no picnic for sure, but I'm just not sure I'm in love with them.....sort of growing on me🤔.

My tentative schedule includes:

Duluth: Superior National, Enger Park, Nemadji, Lakeview National, Black Bear

Northern Minnesota: Giants Ridge (Quarry), Wilderness at Fortune Bay, Giants Ridge (Legends)

Brainerd: Breezy Point Resort (Deacon's Lodge), Grand View Lodge (Pines), Madden's on Gull Lake

Minneapolis: Chaska Town Course, Meadows at Mystic Lake, Stoneridge, The Wilds, The Refuge, Edinburgh

Great list, you've been doing your homework! My favorites I've played in MN are The Wilderness, Deacon's, The Legends, The Quarry, The Preserve, Chaska TC & Mystic Lake. Looks like you're playing The Pines instead of The Preserve which is fine too. It's a tighter course with less elevation change compared to The Preserve.  They did just reno some bunkers at The Pines but definitely not completely back to 100% when I played this Spring. If you have any doubts I'd push you towards The Preserve but just a personal preference as I think it's a better course and in better shape(greens were already in really good condition when I played).  Played both this April in 40-45 degree windchill on opening weekend. I think I prefer the weather you'll probably get.

Also I played Black Bear on a whim one October day(didn't expect to be golfing that late) when I was in town for a college hockey series and it was a pleasant surprise!

'Very frustrating morning. Weather was perfect, so it should have been an enjoyable day out walking. However, Gladstone GC appears to have a slight problem with communication. I was originally planning to play the course tomorrow, but when I called to book the round they told me the course would be closed for a charity event, but that today was open. No problem. I arrived early, and the staffer ask me if I knew there was a nine hole scramble going off on the back nine at 9:30 am. Uh, no. No problem, I'll just play the back first, like I did at Dream two weeks ago. No, can't do that, as maintenance is working on the back's greens.

So, I have a choice, walk nine, or grab a cart and try to finish in less than two hours because they'll boot me off the back if the scramble gets out there. Grrr. Now luckily I'm a fast player and can easily manage a two hour round. However, I like to be the one setting the pace, not the course. Wound up taking the cart.

Anyway, Gladstone is yet another parkland layout that sits on a level piece of rolling terrain. Unfortunately they didn't do a lot with it. I may be mistaken, but I don't think there was a single bunker out there. There were a couple of small creeks, but no ponds or lakes. A couple of sweepers, but the majority of the holes played straight ahead. Thankfully the elevation changes added some eye candy.

I'd say it was moderately difficult off the tee. Even without bunkering most of the fairways felt a little tight. The rough was very light, so minor misses weren't penal unless the ball rolled through into the trees. There were dense groves of trees in many places, but plenty where they were thin, allowing one to punch out. Approaches were straightforward. Moderately sized greens with little defense. A couple were elevated or downhill, so it wasn't entirely like throwing darts. Up and downs were easy, as was putting. The slow green speeds were the only hindrance.

Par 3s were boring. The pair on the front were long, and the 17th was a sand wedge from the elevated tee. 5s were also snoozes. The two on the back couldn't be reached in two, but no risk. Short 4s were meh. Best hole was the 9th. Nice elevated tee on the par 4 with a creek guarding the front of the green.

Conditions were decent. Fairways had a handful of iffy areas, and the turf was a little thin in spots. Rough was light. Greens were wet from the morning dew, and only rolling 8.

Played the Blue tees (tips) at 6275 yds. With no bunkering it was a fairly easy round. Two birdies and six bogies. Highlight of the day was the wildlife. Hit my tee shot on the 18th, hoped in the cart, and drove around the corner on to the covered bridge. Stopped when I saw a deer coming at me halfway across the bridge. She stopped and stared at me for a brief moment, but when I reached for my phone to grab a photo she turned around and took off. Did mange to get a nice photo of a deer in a creek on the front from the middle of a bridge.

I'll be nice and give it 4 cows. Probably closer to 3. Lovely piece of property, just wish it had a lot more of what I like. $49 to ride wasn't bad, but I would have preferred the exercise. Don't think I could have run the course in my allotted two hour window. It's nearly 40 minutes from Island Resort, so unless you're desperate for another round in the area, it can be skipped.

I was going to stop for a beer at the one brewpub in Escanaba that opens early, but after buzzing around the course in under two hours I wasn't going to sit around for an hour and a half, so I headed back to the RV park. Not a big selection at the pub, so I'm not going to drive 20 minutes back to Escanaba. I'm going to walk over to Sweetgrass to watch a little Epson Tour action. Not sure if they allow fans to walk the course during practice rounds, but I should be able to watch players at the range. Beats dropping coinage in the casino.

I did swing by the Sand Point Lighthouse in Escanaba on the trip back. Not a particularly interesting one.

I wonder if the lack of bunkers causes enough of a reduction in maintenance costs that the course can keep the greens fees down.  $49 to ride during the summer is cheap.

I haven't run a course so I don't know what aspect requires the most maintenance $s.

Sand bunkers are expensive to maintain in many areas. Cost and shipping to replace sand can be high in remote areas. Windy areas lose sand at a higher rate requiring more frequent replacement. Additional labor to property groom bunkers isn't cheap either. Courses down here in my area are moving away from sand to grass bunkers to reduce maintenance costs.

Our course is going to do a renovation next year, and they will be adding a fair number of fairways bunkers. This is going to slow play, and increase the maintenance for the crew. They have already planted a lot of trees, including lining the right side of te cart path on our #1 handicap hole. I guess they thought a shot from the rough to a saddle shaped green that’s almost impossible to hold from the rough was just too easy.

Surprising and probably not prudent. If they just want "hard", put in grass bunkers. Three inches of bermuda rough in a nice sized hollow next to the fairway is easier to maintain and will prove plenty brutal.

The problem with thick rough is that it also affects pace of play. I can easily tell if my ball is in a bunker. Thick rough can often lead to groups walking around in circles trying to find buried balls.

Also, unless it's a steep faced fairway bunker, I have a much better chance of getting the ball on the green from the sand. A rough bunker almost certainly means laying up.

Oh, I agree. However, it does make things more penal per what @caniac6course was going for, but at a lower maintenance cost. You also have the option of keeping the grass bunkers only a little worse than the surrounding rough to keep it more playable and minimally impact POP.

Arg, has Michigan been somewhat a disappointment on your journey?

Given the state's reputation, it seems that only Greywalls has really stood out.

Now, I know you have played a number of the best courses prior to this journey, so that maybe a factor. Or perhaps, I'm inferring something that's not there. Also, very possible.

Yeah, I'd say it's a bit of a disappointment. However, as noted, I've played most of the top courses in the state on previous trips, so I wasn't completely shocked. Arcadia Bluffs, Bay Harbor, Treetops Signature, Boyne Hills, Boyne Ross, Forest Dunes, American Dunes, University of Michigan, Stoaten Brae, Eagle Eye, Harbor Shores, Tullymore, Pilgrim's Run, and Harbor Shores have previously provided plenty of excitement.

Heading to Iron Mountain tomorrow for 3 nights. Rounds booked at Pine Grove CC and Timberstone GC.

Sunday I head further west to Woodruff, WI for 5 nights. The weather finally appears to be changing for the worst with a good chance for rain most of the week. I'm booked at Northwood and Timber Ridge. Will likely fill out the other two rounds at St Germain, and Trout Lake or Eagle River before heading to Hayward.

Having a tasty Pigeon Hill Salted Caramel porter at the Island Casino, and licking my wounds. Amazing how quickly the money goes on the table games when the cards are cold. Lol.

If there's a live poker room, I'll play Texas Holdem. Actual skill comes into play along with the luck of the draw.

Otherwise the table games are really stacked in the house's favor.

Mostly enjoyable round today. Fantastic weather, but unfortunately the mosquitoes and flies took a bit of the fun away. Sage Run today. Now that's more like it. The course ranks #20 in the state on GolfWeek's list. I'd definitely flip it's spot with Sweetgrass. Beautiful prairie/parkland layout built on the edge of a ridge. Roughly half the holes are prairie, and the other half parkland on hilly terrain. Wonderful elevated views from a handful of holes, and a number of uphill holes that are probably 2 to 3 clubs up. Bunkering was excellent with some really nasty eyebrows. Actually had to think about a number of tee shots. No water on the course, but plenty of native areas. One dogleg and a few sweepers with guarded corners kept it interesting.

Very generous off the tee, but the bunkering was a concern on quite a few holes. Minor misses would find the rough, which was freshly cut, but still quite penal. Big misses into the wispy native areas could be found and played, but the lies were awful. The parkland holes would be lost balls. Approaches were mixed. Plenty of benign approaches, but the blind uphill shots were tricky, especially without yardages. My new SkyCaddie didn't have the course properly entered, so no GPS today. The course itself had no yardages on the sprinkler heads or yardage stakes. Played blind out there. Up and downs were mixed. Chip or pitch from the fairway and it was straightforward. The sidehill lies from the rough were dicey. Putting was moderately challenging. Better than average greens for a resort course with a few fun ones.

Three of the par 3s were very good. The uphill 5th was very tough. The short 17th was a letdown. Par 5s were decent, but no real risk/reward. The dogleg 3rd could be reached in two after carrying the corner bunker but not much risk. The green was elevated, so a miss would leave a somewhat tricky uphill pitch. Short 4s were a blast. The severely uphill 16th had a very narrow fairway with a deep native area to the left.

Conditions were generally good. A few iffy areas in the fairways. Rough was cut but still thick. Had to hack out twice with an 8 iron. Bunkers were sandy. Greens were disappointing. Looks like they had been aerated a month ago. I'd say they were 90 percent healed, but you could see a checkerboard pattern in them, and it was affecting the roll. Speed was very good at 10 to 11.

Played the White tees at 6356 yds (71.7/133). Maybe I should play without a DMD more often. Best round in recent weeks with an eagle, a birdie, and six bogies. Short game really bailed me out as I struggled to judge distances. Hit three half wedges to within 3 feet to save par. Highlight of the day was my trusty 9 wood on the par 5 3rd. Eyeballed the flag and guessed 200 yds. Hit a solid wood and found it 12' left of the cup. Eagle putt fell in the side door. Sweet.

SR gets a 7 cows. Beautiful course with some interesting and memorably holes. I wouldn't say it blows Sweetgrass out of the water, but I'd probably tee it up here 7 out of 10 times. Would like to see a better risk/reward par 5. Yardage markers and drinking water on the course would have been nice. $85 with no walking rate was very reasonable. Definitely a must play.

Glad you liked it.....it's my favorite UP course.  I love the setting, it feels quite isolated and being in the drumlin the views are super. There is a rugged beauty to it! I love the short uphill 4's as well 8, 16, and I think it's 13 (approach uphill).  The severe uphill 3's are quite a challenge, 5 and 14.  14 and 16 are both a trip and so close in succession.  I like both 9 and 18, but IMO flipping those, with 9 being a better closing hole; and 12, well 12 is just hard🙃.  Nice eagle on #13, I really like that hole as with a good drive you got a chance, but need to hit a high approach as running it up is difficult.  The damn gnats are pesky out there...this spring was the first time I've experienced that!

You can get the house edge down to .5-1% playing craps correctly. Same with blackjack at 3/2. Lots of places are going to 6/5, though, which bumps the odds in the casino's favor quite a bit. I mostly play poker nowadays though. Even that though, you have to play 2-5 or higher because of the rake and randomness of lower games.

Hot and steamy this morning. Glad I teed off early, as it's going to be a scorcher out there later. Pine Grove CC today. Since they allow limited unaccompanied public play, I guess I'd consider it a semi-private. Very nice parkland layout with tall pines lining most holes built in 1902. Should be called Dogleg Grove given the number of doglegs on the course. Lol. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 9th, and 18th holes are flat and fairly boring, but the remainder of the holes climb up into the hills and have some nice elevation change. Water in play on just one hole, the par 4 14th. Bunkering was very light. A couple of tough elevated greens, but most are benign at fairway level.

Moderately difficult off the tee. Fairways are fairly generous, but the longer doglegs require a good poke to have a clear view of the green, and the shorter ones require working the ball to avoid running through the fairway. A number of holes have slanted fairways, so keeping the ball in the short grass also requires working the ball into the slope. Minor misses were no problem as the rough was recently cut to a fairly low height. Big misses might find a thin grove of trees, or find OB or the dense groves. Approaches were straightforward. Greens were a decent size with light bunkering. Up and downs were no problem. Greens had a bit of slope, but no knee knockers.

Par 3s were boring. The 8th was very long, but with no trouble near the large green. 5s were also meh. The 15th could be reached in two with a solid drive, but no danger near the green. Other than the 11th, the short 4s were forgettable. The 11th was uphill with the putting surface hidden from the fairway.

As a semi-private, conditions were better than you're typical public track. Not perfect, but very good. Fairways were lush. Rough was dense, but cut low. Bunkers were a letdown. Plenty of sand, but they were just starting to groom them. Greens were much slower than I'd expect for this type of course. Rolling 9 at best.

Played the Blue tees at 6297 yds (70.7/128). Another excellent round with a well behaved driver giving me plenty of opportunities. Two birdies and five bogies.

I'll give PG 5 cows. Definitely enjoyed the doglegs and sweepers, and the ambience of a private club, but the course needs better bunkering, a couple of eye candy par 3s, a good risk/reward 5, and another tough short 4. $90 was overpriced, but not crazy. Besides Timberstone, there's not much in the area. Decent enough course for an occasional round, but I can't say it's a must play.

Buzzed around the course in less than 3 hours, and the taprooms don't open until noon, so I needed to get a few more steps in. How about 500? Climbed to the jump tower at Pine Mountain Ski Jump. I was disappointed that the jump is locked, so I wasn't able to climb to its top, but the 500 steps up was plenty of exercise. I made a few dozen skydives, but I can't image making a jump on that hill. From the end of the ramp, it looks like you're jumping out into space, as the hill falls away sharply. Probably should have put my golf bag on my back for an extra kick, but it was getting mighty hot when I started the climb.

Sol Blu Taproom in Iron Mountain. Not a big selection, and nothing really up my alley, but it's hot enough outside that the Fox River Blu Bobber Blueberry Wheat is refreshing.

Iron Mountain.  Nice Arg.  You might see Tom Izzo in those parts.  Keep your gaze toward the ground though, otherwise you’ll look right over his head.
