Apparently the same family that ran Whole Enchilada operates another Mexican restaurant there called Haute Enchilada…..might be worth checking out.

Jan. 2024, Chef Luis Solano is retiring from his duties after serving as manager, chef and then operating the restaurant. Ray Retez, who opened The Whole Enchilada in 1979 and was known as the unofficial “Mayor of Moss Landing,” died in November of last year.

The restaurant is a family operation, opened by Retez with his wife Jan and a good friend. Solano is Retez’s son-in-law. Solano’s wife, Kim, worked at the restaurant before launching nearby Haute Enchilada, which remains a popular destination.

Armadillo Willy's.  My friends and I had so many of their Belly Busters "back in the day".  One of them owned a comic book store and we'd set up and eat in front of his customers.  LOL.  Yikes, I just saw it's $100 now.  Well, this was back in late-90's. Since you were in our area, we should've had you branch out to a Korean BBQ joint or even Filipino.  Get you some sizzling sisig.  😁

Well, other than the nasty pavement on US-101 just south of Morgan Hill, it was a short, pleasant drive to Moss Landing. Don't know why the concrete is so bad on the 101. Had a few items fall off the bed above the driver's cab. Three years on the road and I've never had anything come crashing down due to rough roads. Oy.

Small, but decent RV park adjacent to the marina along the Old Salinas River. I can hear sealions on the other side of the fence. Concrete slab could be more level, but I've certainly had worse.

Normally I'd book an RV park in the morning, but the next stop planned after LA was Vegas, hoping to get a tee time at Shadow Creek. However, until I find out whether I can actually play there's no sense in booking that stay. I'll know one way or another on Monday.

Nearest brewpub is near Watsonville, so I'll probably just hang out here today, and venture out tomorrow.

Wow. Can't find a golf course or driving range within 30 minutes that has a grass hitting area. Everything appears to be mats. I called Crazy Horse Ranch, but the range is only open to players with tee times.

Yep.  No good ranges near you - I said in a prior post your only chances for grass range were Cinnabar Hills and Eagle Ridge and you're far from there now.  One thought... San Juan Oaks.  It's not THAT far from Moss Landing.  Problem is I am pretty sure they don't let players just use the range... it's for paying green fee customers only... the Crazy Horse Ranch deal.  But it's worth investigating.

Your other choice is Bayonet/Blackhorse... but they may have the same limitations.... perhaps Poppy Hills?

Used to go to Poppy and just hit balls when I was a kid, but that was the 80’s and 90’s…..😂😂

Great idea... as is the awesome chili at the Spyglass Grill.... but.. that means inside the drive and thus the stupid fee, unless Arg can talk his way out of that.  I hate paying that fee.  But also man it would be very fun to go and do The Hay par 3... with drinks and appetizers at the mexican restaurant on top of that... expensive but very fun... they might make him hit off mats though.

I read somewhere if you spend $35 on food at a Pebble Beach Resort restaurant they'll pick up the tab for the 17 mile drive.

I guess visitors do need to see the Tap Room.  I just find it a one and done.  Prices are outrageous and in the end it's a dark basic bar.  It is Pebble Beach though.  But man if I am gonna eat or drink there I go outside... THE BENCH.

In any case that same chili can be purchased and enjoyed at the Spyglass Grill (halfway house for the golf course, also easily enjoyed by non-golfers.

You're absolutely correct! We spend a lot of time at PB Resorts either staying on property or there for a couple of hours and depending on the restaurant, they take it off your bill or reimburse you.

cool!  yeah we go there a lot and the restaurants do validate that thing so to speak.  Forgot about that.  And it's damn near impossible to spend less than $35 inside the drive so Arg will be all set.

I have been to the Taproom... full of history.  Arnie probably had an Arnold Palmer in there.  Otherwise I prefer the Bench, the Stillwater or the outdoor portion of the Terrace Lounge... love that view of the ocean and the 18th hole.

Lots of good ideas. Probably go to the range at Poppy Hills tomorrow at noon after cruising the 17 mile drive. If I can't play Poppy on Sunday due to the bum wrist, at least I'll get some value out of my NCGA membership.

I've eaten in the Tap Room twice, so I'll likely skip it this time around.

Sounds good.  So when do you start driving south?  And are you set for SoCal courses?

I'm in Moss Landing until Monday, and then it's Paso Robles for 3 nights, Oxnard for 3 nights, then Redlands for a week.

Other than rounds at Pajaro and Poppy, I haven't booked anything due to the wrist. Until I find out if I'm able to play, didn't think it was worth booking anything.

Very wise.  You're not gonna get to play Pajaro or Poppy right?  That's a bummer.  But while I really like both - and I think you would really like Poppy - neither are worth risking long-term ijury for.

The same goes for anything you might play in the rest of the state... assuming you have no ins at private clubs.  Some of those change the equation.  🙂

There are worse places to be to spend some time recovering…..I think it’s the most beautiful place in the world.
