Reduce the fields in golf tournaments?

Not germane to the topic at hand.

Why do sports stars have higher income than surgeons and teachers?  A good question but not on topic.

Because they are paid based on the money they generate, not their value to society. Sports are a marketing tool for brands to advertise their product. The more people who watch, the more they can charge sponsors and advertisers  which increases the prize money.

What is the magic number of guaranteed spots? 100? 50? 1?

For decades Top 60 money list for the year qualified a player to be fully exempt for the following year. For each week's tournament those 60 names were exempt, as were any player who had made the cut the previous week. So, much of the 144 player field for a given week's tournament gained entry thru that week's Monday qualifier event.

Ok, but why is this a better system?

Feels like you and Horschel are arguing a single round qualifier is a better predictor of performance than a full season of results, which is kind of crazy.

True that in the past there were 60 exempt.  Which was probably too many at the time. Today’s tour has enough quality players to hold at least a couple events per week.

Remember….just because you don’t know them by name doesn’t mean they are not qualified to be there.

I love that WRX wants to protect the jobs of these guys so much.

How anyone can argue that equity of effort is present on tour baffles me. In every walk of life there are people that push and some that coast. Few players are ever going to be Vijay or Tiger regardless of rank. I am sure there are guys putting in that kind of time and effort that are ranked in the 100's becuase that is where their talent maxes out. In the same breath there are players that are in the Top 50 that might be capable of Top 10 but for them the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

The majority of tour players are playing for money not history.

Whether the Tour's number of exempt players is 60 or 100 or 125 there is a group that will gain entry (to each tournament) based on their previous full year's results. As for the remaining balance of a tournament's field, if that is thru Monday qualifier or world ranking points the end result will be a field of players who are playing great at the time of the tournament.

A Monday qualifier produces an end result of guys who played great... for one round.

When you clean up the need for money (no debt, house paid off, self-insured, self-reliant, etc.) you become a dangerous person in the world.  You are no longer wedded to a job or career.  You gain independence.  Can't say I agree with his methods but, truthfully, the Unabomber (Theodore Kacynski) had some salient points regarding being enslaved by your possessions.

Been meaning to circle back to this.  Curious about something here:  dangerous to whom?  I'm thinking we might agree here, but just want to clarify that.

Think 1984.  Assume for a moment the goal of government is not just to govern but to actually rule.  But if you cease to be dependent on that government, you don't need their social security, your income is stable and protected, you are self sufficient in as much as you can grow/kill food for your family, and you are largely not dependent on purchased fuel/energy for your home, you can cut the ties that bind you so to speak.  It removes some ways that you can be controlled.

If you cannot be controlled, you are independent and a free-thinker, that makes you dangerous to those who would wish to stifle that for their own gains.

OK, yes we are in complete agreement.  That's what I thought, just wanted to confirm.
