Austin - 2 course recommendations for last minute trip

So I will be heading down to Austin the first week of December and I was hoping to sneak in 2 rounds during my free time.

 

I am looking for 2 course recommendations.  Willing to travel around +/-30 minutes away.  

 

I had been looking into the following courses but want to know what some locals would recommend this time of year to be in best shape? 

 

1. Wolfdancer 

2. Falconhead

3. Avery Ranch

4 Star Ranch

5 Shadowglen

 

If there are any not on this list please let me know.  But looking for your best 2 recommendations.

Wolfdancer has not been in good shape the last handful of times I been out there. Last time was in August. 

 

I would say you won't go wrong with Avery or Falconhead

I agree. I played Avery a couple of months ago and it was in good shape. Haven't played Falconhead in a couple of years, but have never been disappointed. Both are nice tracks.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses!!  Ill be staying about 10 minutes outside of downtown on the East side.  It's funny you guys say that about Wolfdancer because the internet ranks it quite highly, which I am aware is certainly not always the case in the real world.  

 

My main draw to Wolfdancer was the fact that it is mostly in nature and not along a community of houses.  Just looking for fun tracks in good shape with nice scenery, Im sure I wont be disappointed with any of them.

 

This will be my first time visiting Texas so I am excited to be trying out the courses down there.

For some reason I found myself looking at course reviews on Google and I now see what you meant regarding Wolfdancer, seems like a lot of people have been unhappy with the course condition considering the premium price tag.    

 

To my suprise though, there were quite a few people with similar reviews of Falconhead and Avery Ranch citing that the course was either beat up (tees, greens) or poor pace of play.   I don't know what to believe anymore. Now I am unsure of what to do.  Starting to lean towards Golf Club at Star Ranch and trying to decide on another.  Any additional advice is greatly appreciated since I have about a week until I am actually able to start to start booking.

Wolfdancer is awesome and was in great shape 3 weeks ago. 
 

Avery is always in great shape, can be a slow round.

 

falconhead was in good shape on Saturday, no complaints, has the most houses of the courses you listed.

 

shadowglen is a great layout, one of my favorite courses, but the fairways are pretty shaggy at the moment.

 

cant go wrong at Roy Kizer / Jimmy Clay which are in good shape right now too.

 

anyone who says rhe austin golf courses you listed are in “rough shape” at the moment is a snob, or has never played a course in actual bad shape.

From outside the ATX area and it is snowing at home.  Played Lions Municipal on Tuesday after seeing it on an golf show.  Less than 4 hours yet typical muni and looking a little rough and shaggy. Great for family golf with the marshall keeping things moving.  Falconhead yesterday, interesting, fun track with a great layout.  Some of the areas were overwatered and very soft.  Pace of play was definitely off.  Found ourselves behind a family of 6 - little kids - for the first 9 holes and then chasing the sun on the last 3 holes after a fivesome in front of them bailed finishing No. 6 (started on 10).  Today is Jimmy Clay.  Still better than shoveling snow!
