Any low/mid caps playing all hybrid irons ?

I hover between a 10-12 hcp but my iron game is traditionally my weakest component. I hit my fairway woods and my hybrids quite well for my level however. I'm in my 60's so my swing speed isn't getting any faster any time soon. I don't care about shaping my shots - high and straight is all I want and I don't really care that much how my clubs look and feel as long as they work. So - what is the downside of potentially moving to an all hybrid iron set ? Cobra T Rails, Cleveland XL Halo's or Wilson Launch Pads seem to be the top choices - anything else ? I realize most reviews say these types of clubs are targeted towards beginners or high handicaps, so they really aren't normally used by a mid-handicap like myself. Anyone out there in WRX-land with a mid to lower handicap use an all hybrid iron set ? Any downsides other than maybe a few weird looks or wise-cracks - neither of which concern me in the least ? I do plan to demo them against my current Mizuno HM Pro's before I make a potential switch. Thanks all.

If you don't care about workability and want all the help you can get in your irons, there's nothing wrong with them. Also throwing the Sub 70 799 irons into the mix, imo they look the best out of the hybrid iron sets and seem to perform well. TXG likes them.

Probably going to lose a bit of stopping power into the greens, but other than that if it makes sense for your game it makes sense for your game

I say go for it if they end up performing better in a head to head test.  The only drawback to hybrid irons I have noticed is the 9i and PW tend to be the odd ones out in the set.  They tend to not perform as fast as the other clubs in the set because the CG is usually so low and those clubs tend to launch high to begin with.  Might just need to keep it in the back of your mind to move those a little further back than normal in the stance or artificially try and strike down on them a bit more.  Maybe you won't notice this problem but that is my only gripe with all the hybrid set.

As another old guy, I have a suggestion.  A friend of mine that is in his late 60's has switched to hybrid replacements through 6i.  He plays traditional irons in 7-PW for control and stopping power.

He just bought the newer Adams Tightlies hybrids and raves about them.  This guy used to play ++ when we were younger, but as you said, our swing speeds aren't getting faster.

Play whatever works for you.  I am still able to play my irons, but have recently added a 3 and 4 hybrid to the bag where I once carried 2i - 4i.

Personally I used a 3 thru 7 earlier this year but backed off to a 3 thru 5. But I’m not selling the 6&7 anytime soon though. Hybrids irons are easy to hit and as someone else said as long as your game doesn’t require any curve you shouldn’t have any issues. That’s what I like about them. Straight as can be might get a 3 foot curve either way.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll demo some hybrid irons against my Mizuno's as soon as I can. It's a big change to potentially move away from irons I love but I want more consistency in my game. I did look at the Sub 70's, they look nice and they have good reviews, I'm just concerned that if they don't work out resale could be an issue as compared to name brands. Anyone out there who has made the switch from more of a players type of iron to SGI or all hybrids please chime in on how the change affected your game.

I am 78 years old.  I have played on single figures but am now generally 12-14 handicap.

I got some Wilson launchpad irons (4-SW) earlier this year.  I have found them exceptionally good.  They are straight and high launching but do not always stop as quick on the greens. You can draw and fade these clubs if required but it takes more effort.

I would definitely recommend this style of iron.   Test them all and choose the one that feels the best.

I've been playing for 48 years. My lowest HCP was a 6. It crept up to a 16 over the years after I reached 50 years old. Switching to Cleveland Launcher HB irons a year ago got me back down to a 12. My only regret with them is that I couldn't buy a set twenty years ago.
