The history behind the Aluminium/Aluminum difference is quite interesting. The discoverer of element 13 was Sir Humphry Davy, who was a British scientist. He originally spelt it Alumium, then changed it to Aluminum (i.e. the current US and Canadian spelling). It was then later changed to aluminium because lots of other elements ended with "~ium".
