We are a nation of convenience, not quality.  I despise fast food, complicated shoes and Target stores in that order.

Nailed it. Add Walmart, Sam’s, Home Depot to my list. I desperately miss my old hometown hardware store.

But we’ve gotten pretty far from tacos.

Del Taco > Taco Bell

What I wouldn't give for a Bacon Double Del and some crinkle cut fries right now.  But alas when we moved to TX its one of the things we willingly gave up.

It’s odd that it’s us who live in the biggest cities are still able to shop at “Mom & Pop” stores. I’m my hood, we still have little hardware stores, shoe/clothes stores, and food, bakeries, coffee shops.

Of course you still have all the big box stores within a few miles but the difference is that city dwellers don’t need to get in a car, they can just walk out and do some local shopping.

We have the Walmarts Home Depots and Lowes. But thankfully also a few ACE Hardwares and OSH stores. They are by no means the good ol’ mom and pops, but pretty close compared to the mega stores. We also have the traditional Walmart and a Walmart grocery store. Both are awful and I avoid both like the plague.

Yeah, the toilet's best remedy is probably pursuing a tort claim against JD.  Try to recover some damages and make itself hole.

I prefer a good Dirty Burger.

Because of this thread, I decided to get Taco Bell for dinner last night.

This was a choice made while sober.

Things did not end well.

I've never broken a septic tank before......

I would have thought because of this thread one would choose NOT to get Taco Bell!! 😂

Reading the OP, I suppose Big John got some Northern European genes. Our Christmas Tables do not call for vegetarianism nor low BMI values. Made for people working long, hard hours in the forests and in the fields. The meanest big brothers of our 19th century ancestors made the trip over the big waters.

True story: I worked at a Taco Bell during the summer of 1987 between my junior and senior year of high school. It was the year they introduced the steak fajita. And I lost my virginity to one of the shift managers in her car after a closing shift.

OK so I tried to stay out of this one for as long as possible. Taco Bell mini rant time:

Taco Bell used to be a staple for me in my early-20s through my mid-30s. Having a family and kid severely cut down on the shenanigans that led to the majority of my Late Night Taco Bell Adventures (from henceforth shall be called LNTBA). 2 beef baja gorditas no pico, a shredded chicken burrito and/or Mexican pizza no tomato, 1 crunchy taco supreme no tomato.

Without fail. I could cruise on auto-pilot to my local 'Bell during my LNTBA and roll that order off in my sleep.

Late last year, in the month of November, Taco Bell got this great idea to remove all of the tasties. They already irritated me with the removal of Baja sauce several years prior. Now... No more shredded chicken burritos. No more Mexican pizzas. When it was confirmed that upon November 5th damn near my entire LNTBA order was going to be euthanized, I ended my decades long love affair with the 'Bell.

When I get a hankering for trashy fast food of the Mexican variety, I visit Taco Casa. I can honestly say that the only time I have been in a Taco Bell in over a year was because the Whataburger was being remodeled and was closed, my kid was hungry, and she likes soft tacos. I then drove my a** to Taco Casa because I was also hungry, and yes I did not order anything for myself at the 'Bell because I am that stubborn and hard-headed.

Ya, way back, TB could be called actual “food”. Even Mickey Ds they used to cook the burgers when you ordered, now it’s all just nuked I think.
I’ve pretty much lost my taste for fast food. Oh, but got Popeyes chicken sandwich last year, was good!

Biggest drawback to fast food IMO is I ALWAYS wake up hungry. Even if I might have had a night of severe inebriation and impressed my evening female catch with an ability to personally knock down $23 worth of JITB at 3am and uhhhh, save room for dessert.

Thank you for the aha moment.  We would go for breakfast downtown on Sunday mornings, and my wife would point girls who had clothes from the previous night, hair a bit messed up, and say they were doing a "walk of shame."  I was too embarrassed to ask what she meant.  Now I know they went to Taco Bell.

Deranged by this thread, I went to Taco Bell today for lunch (there's one about 2 minutes from my place). I decided to keep it relatively light and old school and see if I could identify where Taco Bell has gone so terribly wrong from their glory days of 1987. I bought a Burrito Supreme and a hard shell taco (with a water).

It's the ground beef. The ground beef is terrible. It's like a greasy paste. When I made it in 1987 it was not nearly as greasy. More crumbly than greasy. I suspect either the quality of ground beef has degraded greatly, they changed to a much worse seasoning, or every single Taco Bell in America refuses to drain the grease from their cooked ground beef (it's supposed to be drained for about 5-10 minutes after being cooked).

It was a profoundly soul crushing experience. And I was left with a feeling of shame and regret...

And to relive old times:

Holy crap. I just figured out the problem with the ground beef. I google searched Taco Bell ground beef and was led to Taco Bell's own website. They now cook the ground beef at a factory, add water, and ship this concoction of nastiness to the Taco Bell stores. It is then reheated and served. That's no doubt why it has the consistency of mush and has too much moisture.

When I worked at Taco Bell in the 80's we cooked the ground beef fresh on site. It wasn't even frozen. We took the refrigerated ground beef out of vacuum sealed packages and cooked them in a large rectangular skillet, drained the grease, and then mixed in the seasoning.

We also made the refried beans fresh in a huge pressure cooker. Now they make it out of bag--just adding hot water. Disgusting! I will never eat at Taco Bell again.

Exactly, I remember TB used to actually resemble a taco, was pretty good actually.

But that paste thing, that’s what happens when you got a food business run by accountants. To me, that’s basically a 7-Eleven nukable burrito. And that’s a level that, even in HS, we would only sink to after drinking like Milwaukees Best in the woods 🤣

Are they part of 3G Capital's holdings?  They bought Tim Hortons up here in Canada, and one of the "enhancements" was to bake and "flash freeze" donuts in a central facility, and then just reheat them in the stores.  A number of people say the donuts have absolutely no taste now compared to prior.  Accountants decision exhibit 1.  I don't drink coffee so I don't know but the drive thru line is always lined up, and then you have people who consider it swill.

And now we find out the people for whom Pabst Blue Ribbon was too classy.....
