Cleveland Hy Wood

Can someone smarter than me explain what of  Cleveland's Hy-Wood is. After Callaway's UW came out I became interested in the in between fairway wood/hybrid category. I looked at the hy-wood and it seems to be a hybrid head with a shorter fairway shaft. The specs of the hy-wood head are the same as the xl halo head according to the Cleveland page. Any magic with this club, the might be to lite for my liking.

Similar idea to what Callaway has done with the UW and what Cobra has been doing with the Tour model 5 woods or Baffler for a number of years. Smaller clubhead and shorter shaft than a traditional fairway wood is easier to control and hit from the deck. A bit more distance and spin then you'd see from a hybrid. I'm quite fond of this category and game a Baffler at 17.5* and UW at 21*.

This Hy Wood is just more of a game improvement style club in this category, which should be welcomed. I imagine a ton of players that struggle hitting woods off the deck would do well with this offering. Likewise if you struggle to get hybrids up in the air or to hold greens, or just are not getting the distance you'd like.

Everything @scooterhd2 said is totally accurate. The Hy-Wood seems like the club you grab if you like the Apex UW but struggle with a  slice or don't make the most consistent center contact.

It's 18 degrees and I think 41.75", whereas the Apex UW comes in 17, 19 and 21* and is 41.5". I've demoed the Hy-Wood and liked it. Then again, I too tend to like every club in this fairway/hybrid mash-up category. The Apex UW is my favorite, but the Cobra Radspeed Tour 5W is close behind.

Mark Crossfield has one in his bag as his third-longest club, if you're a fan of the YouTube golf folks. He's done some stuff about it, though his titles can sometimes be pretty vague so you just sort of have to go through his stuff from the last few months to find it.

Edit to add: I believe the Hy-Wood takes a .370 hybrid shaft, whereas the Apex UW takes a wood shaft. But someone please double-check me on that.

From what I can tell, it's more of a 3/4/5/7 wood replacement for golfers who want a little more forgiveness. Looks like the head size is on par with a 7w or so, the face forgiveness plus rails on the bottom should help those who tend to hit fat or need some help. I'll be honest, I'm seriously considering one to replace both my 3w and 4h. I almost never hit my 3w off the deck, it's for tee shots only and even then I don't use it all that often. My 4h is a hit or miss club that I don't have huge confidence in. So swapping both of those out with a Hy-Wood may help free up a slot and give me something with more confidence. I'm not worrying about any gapping at that end of the bag.

From what I can tell it's the same head as the XL Halo 3H, with a shaft that's an inch longer and lighter to keep it the same swing weight.

You are correct. I just did some Googling and the headsize is the same but it has the face of a fairway wood. Should be interesting to try out. Hopefully I'll have that chance in a few weeks.

The 3+ face doesn't have grooves all the way across like the standard version, but I can't say if that's going to have much effect other than cosmetic. If the face was otherwise different I'd expect to see it in their advertising.

I will bang the drum for this club for a long time. It has quickly become my favorite club in the bag.

I love my 4H. It's my security blanket club. I hit it more consistently than my 5-iron. It's a solid 200 yard club. I had previously played a 4W or 5W as my only fairway wood. I hit my driver about 250-260.  The 4W was a nice tee club to give me 225-230. but I did not trust it a lick off the deck.  For every one I hit on the screws, there were 3 duffs, pushes, hooks. It just wasn't a club I trusted. If a par 5 wasn't wide open, I'd just hit my 4H.

I got a hy-wood a few months ago and it's changed my approach. It realistically brought yardarge into play that I couldn't play before. And it's fantastic off the tee as well. Every single round I've played with it, I can point to a shot I made that wasn't in my bag before. It's as easy to hit as a 7-iron and I have total faith in it. An example for today. I pushed a tee shot into trouble on a par 5.  I had to punch out to get it back in the fairway, but because of hanging limbs I couldn't advance it too far.  I was 218 out to a high elevated green with bunkers short and right.  Not a lot of room to miss.  I flushed a Hy-wood onto the green and got my par. The old days I would have had to lay up and try to get up and down. I never would try that shot with a FW wood, but I completely trust the Hy-wood.

I don't think a lot of people think about Cleveland, so it doesn't get the buzz of the Callaway UW, but it's a great club.

I’m dying to test this club.

can you answer a few questions for me?

I had a 18* Rogue X 18* hybrid that was one of my favorite clubs ever. Last year I lost some swing speed and went to lighter weight and softer flex in my set.

Im breaking in new TSi2 hybrids with Kuro Kage shafts. The 4&5 are fine but the #3 looks smaller than the X and I’m not as comfortable with it. I’m also not getting the distance I did with the X, which was a rocket launcher.

To be fair, I haven’t hit the TSi2 18* much, as I’ve also been toying with a 5 wood (not working out)

So my questions are do you think this club will get the same or maybe more distance than a 5 wood (I’m assuming it will get more than the 18* TSi2 due to shaft length)?

Is it a club geared to a fast swinger, or does it elevate easily?

I struggle with FWs is it as forgiving as a normal hybrid?

I hit it the same distance as my 5-wood. At the most maybe 5 yards shorter. Even though the shaft is slightly shorter than a FW, hitting it on the screws more often makes up the distance. But it's forgiving like a hybrid. Even if I don't put a great swing on it, I rarely get into trouble with it. Worst case may be something higher/lower than I wanted and shorter. But it wants to go straight.

It has a 50 gram shaft that fits a wide variety of swings. I try not to talk about other golf sites on this one, but it's got a lot of buzz from guys with a variety of swings. And the one thing people say is that the stock shaft is really good and playable by a wide range of golfer. The Cypher 40 isn't a big name shaft, but it just works in this club.  Whether you take a smooth swing or go after it, it launches high and straight.

I find it as forgiving as my PING hybrid. And I hit it MUCH better than the PING 5-wood I had before it.  I actually tried the regular Cleveland hybrid at a demo day and wasn't as big of a fan of it compared to my PING. But the hy-wood is crazy forgiving. I am absolutely fearless about pulling it out when I'm at that distance. I don't care if it's trouble on either side. A guarded green. Whatever. I feel like I'm going to get it in the vicinity of my target.

Strictly speaking it is a hybrid, the 'wood' part of the name is marketing speak, not technical speak. It's not all that different from my 16 and 19 degree Cleveland hybrids that I sweep. Even my 22 degree doesn't work all that well for me with a steep attack angle.

Bought one and used it on the range and for a few rounds.  I have a few hybrids I do fine with and wanted the Cleveland to work.  Alas, no such luck.  A series of hooks for me.  May have been the shaft.  I'm an old guy but I tend to take the club back slow and come down aggressively, so sometimes I need a heavier or stiff shaft, while I had a regular shaft in this club.  In any event, nice idea that just didn't work for me.

I bought one today. I used the PGASS playability on the TSi2 18* I was struggling with.
I had a Senior flex Kuro Kage in the TSi2, and I was all over the place with it, and hitting moon balls. I’m also replacing the matching 21* with a Rogue X 4 hyb in outlet condition I got today from CPO.

The Hy wood and the X are both regular flex. I owned the X for 3 years, I know it like the back of my hand. It will gap very well with my 21* 5 iron. The Hy wood is a blind buy.

I love the reviews of this club. Do you think I’d be wasting my time waiting for a sale or spotting a used club to pop up?

It's a new product and Cleveland prices competitively, so I don't know if there will be a sale on them in the next 6-9 months.  As good as clubs are, no club is a fit for everyone. I'd bet a few used ones pop up. Cleveland has a pretty low market share though, so they are hit and miss on the secondary market. The plus side is the low demand carries over to lower prices when you find them.

Like most companies Cleveland goes on closeout when a newer model comes out. I wouldn't expect they'd have a new version of the Hy-wood anytime soon. Their Launcher Halo hybrid line from last year is at closeout prices now, if you can find them.

This club and others similar are response to a bigger hybrid.  The cobra Forged Tec was the first larger hybrid that I remember, then others came and not only that but added in fairway shafts(.335 instead of .370 tips) like the Callaway UW and an even larger head but still smaller than a fairway wood.

It is all in what you like.  I have gotten to the point that I WILL NOT play a hybrid, fairway or driver without an adjustable hosel.  I liked the UW, but wanted the adjustability, so I stuck with the Forged Tec, plus it just doesn't want to go left unlike most other hybrids.   I imagine you will see some other companies start to release something similar in the future.

Any other experiences with this? My concern is the weight. I'm a slow swinger, but lighter shafts activate my "Destroy that ball now!" mode. no matter what I try.  So I should be in 95g irons but play much better with 115g.

Anyone have issues with the light weight?

Welp I tried it finally. Might be the best club I ever hit. I know wtf hyperbole.

I swing it slow, hit it thin so I’m low and slow like bbq.

This thing has been longer than my 3 and 5 wood in the rounds I’ve played with it.  Don’t know what it is but it’s close to being a mainstay.

Anyone looking for a reliable club at the top of their bag should give this a shot. 10-20 yards easily over my 5 wood.

I have 3/5/7(heavenwood) and might drop all 4 if this keeps up. launches higher than all 3 and I have bo clue how.

It's the combination of having so much weight low and back, and the high launch shaft. My similar 16, 19 and 22 degree Launcher Halos replaced my 3, 5 and 7 woods. They're not the best clubs I've ever hit, though. My Launcher driver is. 😉
