I was just going to post that I can't seem to pick a horse that starts the race (round 1)  with some positive momentum. I have for weeks had three horses start slow that end up flirting with the cut line on Friday. Just when I was going to tell the gang that my boys are all at best -1 my scoreboard started to light up. In checking my teams scores I found that Kuuuuuch made 4 birds in a row coming in and Cam Young made 3 birdies on his back 9. So I ended up day one with two ponies in fine position.  Now that is a better start this week for the leader of this thing. 😄

Monday this week the group headed back to Springdale. I got the proper warm up in before the round this time. 😀 I did not hit it well on the range. 

At 12:20 under sunny skies with a temperature of 78* we hit our first shots skyward. I took two pars and two bogeys on the first four holes. Then the mess started. I just could not hit a decent ball the remainder of the afternoon. I did not shank a shot but topped a ton of shots. I made two triples and two doubles. One of the triples happened when I went one pant leg rolled up and tried to hit one off a creek bank. I topped it and it went 20 yards ahead and then clicked a tree and landed behind me in the creek sploosh. Negative yards and a penalty stroke.  UGH. It was that kind of round. I putted ok but had 4 lip outs and 4 burned edges. Peter says to me somewhere in the middle of the back 9, " I'm just surprised to see you play so poorly, you normally somehow get it turned around during a bad round. "  Peter added, " I want to thank you LP for your continued calm demeanor and for the compliments you have continued to dish out to the rest of us. You easily could have pitched a fit and been steaming hot most of the day. "

My reply, Peter I do not care for it when someone in the group is just down right crabby, pissy, and complains continuously during the round. That sort of behavior detracts from the other's in the group's enjoyable outing. So I won't behave ever in such fashion. I continued on with, besides this is one of the more picturesque valleys here in our mountains and I am on a special course playing golf with my buddies in that beautiful valley so I have nothing to be crabby about. The cause of my horrendous play had to be because my body was quite tired from the strenuous weekend of work that I had just put in. I could not find a swing or rhythm of any kind from the 5th hole on. Some days you just play rather poor golf. It happens.

After two weeks of much warmer temperatures here in the AVL that featured some solid rain as well as a generous dose of sunshine BFCC is now far more green.

This trip has been going on for 30 years and they've been to Springdale before. I only got involved a few years ago so it'll be new to me. We're staying on property in the Treehouses. We are doing a Stableford format over the whole weekend plus a Ryder Cup style comp in afternoon rounds.

Now that sounds like quite the fun golf trip with the fellas. Like the formats. You will love the place. 

 

Springdale at Cold Mountain has been there for years. I played it for the first time 4-5 years ago. During my first go at it I thought this golf course is just fantastic but it is in atrocious condition. I loved the lay out and the course is located in one of the more scenic areas of greater Asheville. The fairways were all hardpan so good tee shots many times would bounce into trouble spots because of no grass. UGH. Then when you did get it on the green they were 70's shag carpet. Cement fairways and furry as hell greens is what I found. I said to the foursome that this place has so much solid golf character but it needs a new owner to come in and give it a complete makeover. It had been neglected for over a decade. I didn't play it again due to the poor conditions. A few years ago a man bought the place and did just that. He made all the needed improvements to the golf course first. Then the old clubhouse and pro shop were demolished. For over a year we golfers parked in a dirt lot and checked in at a temporary hut by the driving range due to the construction. Just this year the new clubhouse and pro shop opened. There is a new fleet of excellent and fast golf carts with one of the best GPS systems I have used. There's a new large and very slopped practice putting green by the pro shop that I bet you and the boys will have some post round putting games on (photo 1) . The brand new buildings are of beautiful design . On the back 9 you will experience playing the Springdale Spasm # 13. A golf hole so evil it has this warning sign next to the cart path as you drive up to the tee boxes. 😄   It is legendary. This number one handicap hole is wicked tough. It is a sort of a hour glass shaped steeply uphill dogleg par 4 with a creek crossing the fairway just beyond the ideal skinny landing spot in the fairway. The green is of generous size thankfully (photo 2) because your approach shot in is long. The Spasm plays from tips 476, forwards 422, and seniors 335 all uphill. Be sure once you are on the 13th green to look at the rust colored home adjacent to it. It is quite unique as it features a stream running right underneath it. (photo 4) 

Springdale to me is now a must play golf course when visiting the mountains of western North Carolina. Since the golf course was redone I have played it a dozen times. The first five holes start you out gently. Things start to get interesting on #6. 

I expect your group will have a fine weekend competing on this splendid golf course. I play the hybrid combo tees white/yellow at 5990 yards. I play off an 8 and have had it going a few times and shot in the mid 70's. I also have had a pair of 90's, but most visits I end up with a score somewhere in between.

 

I hope that after you read this you are even more jazzed for next weekend. ⚡🏌️‍♂️

I had 3 until the weather crushed Svensson - from a 66 to a 79! 😯
