Again?    Unbelievable.

Fellas how many times have I stressed the importance of meeting deadlines in this contest? Here we are again with two that did not hit the mark with getting their weekly records posted on time.

Q, do just as you did yesterday and continue to provide UNK marks for these tardy participants.

Going forward it will be their responsibility to make a post that shows you what their late previous week's record was and also what that brings their seasons total up to.

Thanks as always Q for your professional stats work which is always on time. I very much appreciate having you assist me with the numbers.

Let's return to the states this week for our PGA Tour golf. We say adios to Mexico and hello to the DC suburbs. Those of you that have been on our threads for a number of years have heard a few stories from my attending well over a dozen Kemper Open tournaments when I lived in Northern Virginia. I had a fraternity brother who made it on Tour and Brian provided me with a couple of tickets each year. The first one I attended was held at Congressional C.C.  The Kemper Open then moved to the brand new  DC's version of a Tournament Players Club golf course.   Doc and I went together a bunch and had many a fine time watching the best on Tour play in the 80's and into the early 90's.  I was surprised to see this week's Tour stop is indeed back on the same Potomac, Maryland golf course. It is no longer named the TPC of Avenel. They have changed it to something they think is perhaps more snooty sounding.  UGH .  The next Tournament in our contest is the Wells Fargo Championship from TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

I see that Touch has brought back memories of DC metro area tour stops, this area has some traditons but unfortunately golf has faded from the area.  It was not always that way!

We had the Kemper Open here at Congressional along with a US Open on occasion. It was decided that the stadium courses were all the rage in the mid to late 80's very early 90's and thus Avenel CC in Potomac MD became the new venue.  The players hated the course and the fields became less than impressive as the years progressed.

With expanded first time participants we were introduced to first time winners on the Tour

Sprinkled in with some more famous players like 2 time winner and fan fave Greg Norman the Great White Shark!  Fred Couples managed a win at -1.  Tom Kite and the coke bottle shades made their way to the trophy presentation.

I remember when Touch and I attended a few of these tournaments, Larry had another golf connection former college buddy and traveling tour pro Brian Claar was gracious enough to leave tickets for us and we pounced.

I was more interested in the 19th hole festivities in the day, but I do remmeber marveling at how small these guys looked that could hit the ball a mile on the fairways!  Boss of the moss never had more meaning than when you attend a PGA Tour event! Even the No name Kemper Open which BTW had more sponsors than a farm team in Double A Raleigh Durham baseball stadium

From the Kemper Open, to the FBR Capital Open, to the Booz Allen Hamilton Open, and then the At&T National sponsored by Tiger Woods back at Congressional. Now there is a Big nothing burger here in the DC metro area...people do not like more traffic congestion on their weekends and fan following was waning.  If Tiger is not here we do not sell beer.  In the 70's the Kemper Open was one of the highest purses on the tour, exceeding the majors. Former 70's winners include 1970 Dick Lotz, 3 time Kemper champion Tom Weskopf, Doug Sanders 1972,1974 Bob Menne,Ray Floyd in 75, Joe Inman 76, Andy Bean 78,Jerry McGee79, John Mahaffey started out the 80's with a Kemper Open win, followed by The Walrus Craig Stadler in 81 and 82.  Touch has a story about Craig Stadler.  The great White Shark was a golfing highlight reel and won twice in the eighties.  Boom Boom in 1983.  Guys like Dr Gil Morgan, Morris Hatalsky, Tom Bryum, Steve Stricker, Billy Andrade,Grant Waite, all made their annual treks to the DC area and reaped the rewards of being first time tour winners.  Touch was enamored with the blonde flowing mane of one time winner Bill Glasson who had a strong game, but was always besieged with nagging injuries. He was a winner in the eighties and nineties.

So here is a toast to memories of our tour pros grinding it out in the hot humid DC summers to make that stop in Avenel Farm after the famous players stopped coming when it was no longer played at Congressional.  Hot and Humid and a dog track it was not long before even guys like Glasson stopped coming.

A tip of the cap to first time winners like New Zealander Grant Waite who in 1993 was able to bank a 234,000 dollar winners purse.  And Mr Steve Stricker who won his first two tournies in 96 The Kemper Open and the Western Open.

Let's rejoice the DC area gets a much better tournament once like the fleeting Eclpise when you have to wear special shades and don't look to long because we will never get this window again in the spring when the weather is nice and the bugs at Avenel will be manageable.  Who will be a first time winner this week!?

Walked as solo round today at Occoneechee.  84 degrees, humid but a nice breeze.  Teed off at 3PM, back to the car at 6:15.  Played at about 5500 yards and the 370 yard Par 4 13th was reduced to a 150 yard Par 3 due to cart path maintenance so Par was reduced to 70.  Used the same ball from my last round and it made it through another 18 holes!  Not in much trouble off the tee with 7-14 fairways hit with no bad misses, 29 putts which is outstanding for me.  The score?  38-43=81.   2 birds, 7 pars, 6 bogies, 2 dbl bogies, 1 triple.  11 over par is my best score ever.  The cold Mt. Dew in the parking lot 19th hole was extra sweet tonight fellas!!

This is my frat brother Brian the Tour player that provided KB and myself the passes to the Kemper Open all those years at TPC Avenel. Brian is currently a Champions Tour rules official. I am very thankful to Brian for his generosity that allowed me and my friends numerous chances to see some PGA Tour golf LIVE!

Certainly never attended any Kempers so I'm not sure how I got this towel but my Mom was a Kemper agent for many years so maybe she brought this back from a conference?  Found it a few weeks ago while doing some spring cleaning...

Look at you rocking the Montana gear.  Good for you.  You are hitting all the high points (to me anyway).  About 5 years ago Rick was testing out what would be completely revamped into the Finn Scooter.  He was toying around with a foldable, rideable, single man vehicle and I saw him in the parking lot loading it into his car.  I asked if he wanted some help and he politely said "no."  I didn't realize I was interrupting his test.  He wanted to see if it was feasible for the average golfer to load and unload into a vehicle by themselves... clearly he decided it wasn't.

He/they are/were so innovative in their bags, push carts, and now the Finn... and what a nice family.  They recently sold to a much larger group, but their success made it impossible to realistically sell to another family/individual.  I hope nothing changes and they continue to do great things.

How you feeling Mr. Phoenix?

TKE myself.

I am getting there...today in physio I was able to do step ups of 16 inches or so.  I was able to rotate, sort of, on one leg. And able to gently swing a club back and through!!

Still can't lift myself up with the left, push anything or load fully.  But happy with the progress.

I played twice this week and had intended to post up a recap tonight. Earlier this evening I listed some "not using anymore" golf clubs on the For Sale classifieds thread. I received multiple questions from potential buyers. I got caught up in the WRX message system.

I will eventually get around to telling y'all how I fared this week on the links.

That is my 2nd C-130 and I have one other lighter Sun Mtn bag also.  A few pockets have ripped and one zipper sticks on the black bag so it's now a back-up.  I thought it might last a little longer but oh well.  My wife has used a Sun Mtn 4-wheel Micro-cart the last few years and loves it.  Solid products and you might pay a bit more but they can take a beating!
