That is truly amazing how that jockey manuerved him through all that traffic and the horse just ran like he was shot out of a cannon once he had an opening!  The announcer was totally blindsided.

I was physically beat up after playing Springdale Monday. That was definitely the worst ball striking round I have had this year. Perhaps going to my happy golf place would provide the cure for my current illness. It had been weeks since I got down to Lindsayland and played 18 with Mike and the boys. Stan and I carpooled to the upstate of South Carolina Tuesday morning. 

 

We arrived a full 90 minutes before our tee time. I wanted to have some extra time for conversation with the head pro and Andrew in the pro shop. On the range I hit 3/4 of a large bucket, spent 15 minutes at the short game area, and then rolled 'em for 10 minutes. While hitting balls Stan turns to me and asks, "you still battling the tops? " My answer to him was "surprisingly buddy I am hitting them right crisp."

At a quarter past high noon Karl, Mike, Stan, and the blonde one launched our first golf balls into the sky. 

 

#1   short par 4 -   center cut drive.  PW to 15 feet. Left the first putt on the edge.    Par

#2  short par 4 -   center cut 3 wood.  9 iron to 30 feet. Two putts.     Par

#3   par 5 -   nice drive, topped 3 wood next. Yes I hit a low hopper topper once again. Had a hybrid from 180 yards still remaining. Pushed it bad and ended up  25 yards right of the green. Hit a beauty with my 60* and it came to rest two feet from the cup. Made it and saved it.   Par

#4  par 3 167 yds - only pushed my tee shot slightly but it was still a push. Not as savory a pitch as the hole before. Missed the 12 footer. Bogey and +1 for the round. 

#5 tough downhill dogleg par 4 - solid 3 wood down the middle. 7 iron approach shot was just short and ended up in the front bunker. Hit a fine sand  blast to two feet. Saved another one.   Par        

#6 par 4 straight away - another solid 3 wood off the tee.  Missed my third green in a row with a 9 iron from 128. Did not save it. Bogey and now +2.

#7 par 3 161 yds - Hit it the closest in the group. Missed my banked uphill 11 foot birdie putt just by a smidge.   Par.  When the pin is in the back on #7 par is a great score. Still 2 over. 

Eight  and Nine are the two longest holes on the front

#8 par 5 uphill dogleg to the right -  Big drive. Smoked 3 wood. 6 iron to 8 feet. Lipped it.  Par

#9 par 4 flat and long -  Solid drive. Hybrid to 15 feet two putts. Par

 

Shot 38 on the front. 

 

Had a turkey sandwich, chips, and my milkshake. Might have had a few puffs off a j as well. 

 

#10 very long par 4 with a demanding all over water approach. 10 to me is the hardest hole on the course -  Crushed drive. Next faced a downhill stance and 188 in. Pulled 5 wood and hit it well but it was a touch pushed. Right distance though. Failed to get it up and down. I don't mind making 5 on 10 because I too often double that monster.  Bogey and now +3

#11  par 4 hard dogleg right - Hit the proper faded drive. 5 hybrid on and two putts.  Par 

#12 par 3 171 yards - again I was closest off the tee. Missed my 15 foot birdie try.   Par

#13 par 4 dogleg left with the pond and brick wall in front of the green - Went driver when I normally shape a 5 wood off the tee. Playing with gobs of confidence at this  point. Nailed it. Gap wedge to the middle of the green because you can't go pin hunting when the pin is on the left side. A great first putt that was severely banked and tough to navigate. Tapped in a 3 inch'r for par.    I remained 3 over thru 13. 

#14  par 5 straight short but steeply uphill - If I totally catch my first two shots this is one of the par 5's that I play that this short knocker can reach in two. Big drive and followed it with a smashed 3 wood. I hit the speed slot in the fairway with my 3 wood and hoped for something tasty. You can not see the green surface from the middle of the fairway as it is pretty severely uphill. When we drove up greenside I saw that my second shot had settled nicely under the hole 12 feet from the cup. To this point in the round I felt I was putting with the best stroke and most confidence that I have felt in weeks. I exhaled deeply, made a smooth pass at it and made the eagle putt.  Eagle and now  +1 

#15    Par 3 named Beauty 157 yards -  Mike shouts eagle shooter has the box. I hit one directly at the pin but it was long. I experienced an adrenaline rush during that swing. I was the furthest from the hole out of the group. I had a mildly downhill 8 inch breaker from 25 feet. I poured that  sucker right in !  I gently tossed my putter over the collar and did a little shimmy with the hips dance. Wow. Three under in the last two holes.  Birdie and back to Even. 

#16     straight away par 4 with a peninsula green - Oh no. I over the top yanked my 3 wood into the trees left. It is sloped hardpan at the bottom of the tree clusters and a lot of water nearby. I was thinking it landed hard and kicked into the wet stuff. I put the club down and my hands went on my knees. We all searched and my tee shot was found dry. I had a small window between two trees for my selected safe low punch shot of 30 yards back into the fairway. The lie was hardpan with acorn shells and sticks ruble. I delivered a fine get of jail shot with my shut down 8 iron. I had 128 left down hill into the peninsula green. Can't go long or it's rinsed I thought. Jumped on a PW. It was on a fine line and hit the middle of the green. I was second to putt. I had a 14 inch breaking putt of 20 feet remaining. Mike says aloud play more break than you see LP. I reply thanks coach. I adjusted my line to 17 inches of break to the left. That was the correct calculation. I drained it. Stan says, man that was some par. Yes it was a heck of a save from where my tee shot came to rest.   Still Even. 

#17      Uphill dogleg right par 4 and what I consider the second hardest hole on the course - Pure 3 wood to just inside the 150 marker. Hit a 6 iron real well to behind the pin 15 feet. I had a steep downhill birdie look. I chose to play it safe as I have run many putts by from this spot  4 or more feet by in prior rounds. I parked it on the welcome mat by the front door.   Par and Even with one to play. 

#18    (first photo) uphill straight par 5 - A solid drive started it out. I again half topped my 3 wood for my second shot.  LP was king of the  tops this week.😄  I hit a 7 iron for my third shot from 140 and it sailed just past the pin and settled on the back apron. I two putted from 30 feet for my par.  

 

I shot a 72 and took the trophy.   Second place was Mike with one more stroke than me. 

That's my best score in 9 months. 

 

Golf is filled with a whole bunch of uncertainty and many of us find that aspect of the game alluring.  When one tees off he has no idea of what lies ahead. Will there be a struggle or will it come your way in free and easy fashion?  Will anything memorable occur be it positive or negative?

I rode the golf drama train big time this week. A 90 and then the next day 18 strokes better. Eagles are very rare in my game and it was a blast to snag my first one of the year. 

 

The pints in the bar afterwards were extra sweet.  

 

What might have been a contributing factor to my solid round? 

Because I play that golf course with more confidence than any other in my rotation, and it had been way too long since I had been on the links with this guy. 💥

 

Bravo for the extra special golf experience that I find only 55 miles south of me.

Just the best display ever of a turbo boost while zigging and zagging along while seeing the perfect path ahead at just the right time to win the race.  This jockey and horse were on a mission. The back story on this horse's team is incredible. This one was memorable and to be cherished.

One fabulous sporting moment.

Yikes!  Not fun. Lightning fast greens are not my cup of tea.
