Thats a very good point I hadn't thought of, I'm sure those cases just mashed up to the point where they won't close/latch then they have a whole other set of issues.

Again, I've traveled with one for ten years or so and have literally never heard of this happening.

And if it did, lets say you had a trip where the baggage handler was tossing them onto the ground from ten feet up - which bag would you prefer.

And SKB will replace them with a lifetime warranty….so there is that.

What amazes me is that guys here on wrx are able to tell, with one picture of the golf bag and not the case, that he used a soft shell and no stiff arm and left the heads attached. Simply amazing!

I've had my SKB case for just over 15 years I think.

The only issue I've had is that Delta, coincidentally, broke one of the wheels off. SKB replaced it for  free. I'd never trust my clubs in a soft case flying commercial.

I'm not making fun of the guy but its entirely possible he doesnt fly commercial with his clubs - ever - and doesnt know any better in terms of how to pack his gear.

Honestly I hope its that bc there's no other explanation I can talk myself into.

Didn't Ok State travel private for their golf events? (I could be making that up).

Odd question, and maybe one more for someone like @Creedo77, but for the PGA and LPGA folks who fly a lot do the caddies handle the golf gear/bag?

All on the players

I don’t take the bag home with me after each day either. PGA Tour usually has bag storage, KFT is hit/miss on that.

i never really understood why some caddies take the bag hole with them at the end of every day.

OK cool, somewhat surprised, thank you for the response sir. In reality, even if I was a Tiger Woods/Jon Rahm/Jordan Spieth level player, I might want to take care of it myself as well.

UNLIKE Hovland, I take the head off of my driver and use something comparable to a Stiff Arm LOL 🙂

I think some baggage handlers target golf clubs intentionally.  It's like the hate golf and golfers so they abuse it on purpose.  I don't travel that often with clubs, but you are lucky if there isn't damage to something.  Legs on stand bags are another frequent casualty.

Why aren’t hard cases used? Are they more difficult to travel with?

As a general rule hard cases are harder to travel with. They don't fit into the trunks of most cars is the biggest beef.

When I'm on a trip by myself or with one other person we usually put the cases across the back seat.

That said, 4 guys with hard cases and luggage will fit into a minivan with the rear seats folded down no problem.

Soft case is fine if you pack properly. Me, my buddies and family have traveled with clubs in soft bags cumulatively hundreds of times and never had a problem.

Remove the driver head, use a stiff arm and pack the bag tightly, especially around the heads.

One of my buddies has a hard and soft case. He always uses the soft case. He recently used the hard case when he and his wife were both bringing clubs. He said after the trip he was getting rid of that hard cased monster. A major PITA in the rental car.

I travel with my brother all the time and my SKB (the standard one, one carry bag) is shorter and thinner than his CG Last Bag when its packed.

The only benefit IMO to the CG is you can "cram" it into trunks easier or it will lay easier over bumps in the trunk. Question always is, how much do you really want to be "cramming" your carry bag into the trunk?

Anyway, never been an issue for us.

Soft sided bags not only fit better in cars, they are much easier to store away. I have use one of the Club Glove Last bags for years. I have always taken off the metal heads and wrapped my irons in a couple towels to help pad. I have a cut hockey stick that i will also add into the bag. I like to travel with my staff bag as well since it offers a bit more padding around the clubs.

Missing clubs by Delta or any airline isn't good, but at least they found them in time. However I agree with OP and many on the thread, he doesn't know how to pack his clubs well. Surprised a PGA tour players doesn't pack his clubs better. He should have been using a club protector stick, taken all the clubheads off the woods, and turned the graphite shafts upside down with grip up or use a hard case.

I agree, he went off cursing at Delta in other posts - seems a little...pampered/ridiculous to be honest. Like someone who has never traveled commercial before. How many thousands of flights were cancelled yesterday?

I fly with mine in a hard shell case - with a GPS/tracker tag on it. I'm amazed that somehow I'm more OCD about my gear than a PGA Pro.

I thought I read somewhere that he always flys commercial ?     Did he really go off cussing delta ?   If so , I like him more.  Why ? Just because, that’s a real reaction - although wrong.  Lol.  I like real.  I can deal with aggression just fine. It’s these passive aggressive fakes that I can’t decide what to do with.  Slap seems to work as a blanket response. But you hate to paint with a broad brush 😂

Preach.   Goodness gracious ! .  Preach.    I think this was half in jest.  But in all seriousness, I’m generally in shock when I find someone in any service industry who does a complete job , and neatly.   It’s just so rare.

Two years ago I stumbled onto a pair of brother in laws who are electricians. Both in their 20s. Both first Gen Americans of Ukrainian origin.  I cannot tell you how good of a job they do.  And they’ll leave it cleaner than they found it.    I told them daily that they are a rarity. And a blessing.

those two younglings today have 30 or more employees , an industrial division , and are covered up with business.   But.  When I call , one of them will personally come over that day to my shop or home.   Both they rewired completely.  I’ve sent them all the business I could , and they are grateful. As am I.

sometimes I wonder if there was a time when service for everything was similar ?  If so ….. man.  I understand why old guys are grumpy. They know what they’re missing.   Just a random thought I’ve had.

I'm so used to union electricians that cleaning up after them doesn't faze me, they all leave their wrappers/extra wire/connectors/etc. behind for proof of work that a lot still do it on cash jobs. Sigh.

I have a hard case and traveled with it once, to California.  It was a pain and it did fit in our rental with the back seats down (and that's on us, it was as big as we wanted to go for a rental but it was a small SUV type) and lugging it up a bunch of stairs to our room where we were staying wasn't fun, either (needed the back seats available when driving about).  Now it hogs room in our storeroom!

Bought a couple of Club Glove Collegiates for a later overseas trip and haven't used the hard case since.  All removable heads removed, stiff arms, shafts packed appropriately (I still worried over my putter) and no issues.  Same again a year later and took the soft side on another trip to California as well.

What I like about them is they fold over nicely when empty and on one trip with a decent sized SUV it was easier to pack the back of the vehicle for travel between our two "bases" with the golf clubs out of the soft sided travel bags.  They are marginally better dragging along from car to airport check in and have their own bulkiness issues so I won't say they are all that much more convenient that way.  But at the destination I can fold over the Club Glove bags and they easily fit in the back of the rental aren't hogging space.

I see both sides and may just be living on borrowed time, lol, but if we'd have had two hard cases to take to the airport on our first trip to Scotland we'd have been making the 3 1/2 hour trip in two SUVs, instead of one, and needed something way bigger than we wanted for driving the roads over there.  But like I said, I see both sides and wouldn't criticize anyone else's ideas about how to protect any of their stuff.

😮 wow.

they rewired my circa 1890 farmhouse  (which didn’t get electricity until 1920ish)- I mean every single wire , box , receptacle , switch , fixture , panel and the meter base to current new construction code ( even though I didn’t have to do it to that degree ).   Not a wire in the house smaller than 12 gauge.  And 100 % true LED fixtures.   So over kill ….they did that for two stories , in 12 days.  Didn’t rip out a single piece of plaster or sheet rock. Just cut a few 4 inch round access holes which were easily patched after the fact.   ( I needed to paint anyway )  Fished each wire in place and old knob and tube wire out.   I was their helper each day pulling wire.  So I was present for it all.  I know how sturdy it all is.  Boxed braces built and screwed on for each ceiling fan box to mount to , and the neatest job of routing on the crawl space you’ve ever seen.  It’s like ocd met a soldier on speed.

we lived in the house while they worked. And each day they vacuumed  up after themselves - completely - and took away the trash tools etc .  Vacuumed  baseboards , ceilings you name it.  Anywhere they made dust.  Was amazing.

I own both a SKB and a Bag Boy T-700 soft sided carrier.  I prefer the soft sided carrier because you just take your golf bag out of the carrier and it fits in the car easily.  The carrier folds up so you can easily get it in the trunk, too.

The SKB is great except for being way too heavy and won't fit in a lot of rental cars.

I'm not sure that the pros use adjustable hosels like we do.  A lot of their drivers and other woods are glued, not adjustable.  So taking the heads off is not an option in that case.

I bought SKB cases for my drumkit like ... 25 years ago. Short of falling out of an airplane, I doubt there's more abuse the golf club version could endure than those have over the years. (They fell out the back of a crappy band-van once when someone didn't totally close the hatch before leaving a venue once) And they're still going strong.

Needless to say, I have SKB for my clubs too. 🙂
