At the end of the day, I'm not a tour pro and I don't trust the airlines with my clubs one single bit. When I travel, I rent clubs. My babies stay nice, safe, and snuggly in their little bag at home. They are so cute! 🥰

I put the shaft in the bag, tip first.  I had an SKB hard case, absolutely hated it. Didn't fit in rental cars, couldn't put anything extra in it either.   Remove heads, upside down shafts and a stiff arm for my club glove.

Based on these comments, I don't take enough golf trips. I still have my 2010 players travel cover. Zero issues, mostly fly United.

Go to Home Depot and get a 47 inch dowel.  Cheap.  Effective.

I've had my Club Glove Last Bag since the mid-late 90's and it still works and looks great.  The only visible signs of wear are on the "skid plate" and wheels.  Granted, I normally only travel with my clubs once a year but it has (obviously) been a great investment.  I use my Stiff Arm, take the heads off of my woods, insert the shafts grip-side out inside my staff bag and wrap my clubs with golf/beach towels.  

As others have said, the Last Bag folds up easily and uses less room in my rental (as well as taking up less space in our home closet).  Yeah, it's a handful "fully packed" but I can get two pairs of shoes, golf towels and everything else that will fit inside my staff bag.   I had a hard case prior to the Last Bag but it didn't last 4-5 years before the latches became inoperable.

Have had the Club Glove Last Bag Collegiate for many years w/Stiff Arm and its been stellar, never a problem.  Folds up nicely when not in use. 

They also have an entire luggage line that looks nice.

I also flip my irons, head-side down in the bag only grips up. I had one trip I did that, and when I got home, they were all back to normal side up with an "inspected" bag tag inside.

This is the key, heads off any screw-in woods and irons going in grip out. Zip tie other wood shafts to a stiff arm and you’ll have much less breakage.

Club Glove all the way. I have the Pro XL with stiff arm, never had a problem.

My gf got the collegiate and stiff arm, just had her driver snapped like VH (Southwest), but we took it over to PGA Superstore where we got it and they laughed and gave her another shaft for free. 
So moral of the story, get the pro XL, superstore rocks, Southwest sucks.

Hard cases do suck. They're bulky, hard to fit into rental cars and, despite what some on here would have you believe, they're not very durable. Once a year, sure, fine. Repeated use? They get beat all to hell, the hinges break, the clasps stop lining up. Just no.

 

Like so many have said, a Club Glove Last Bag and a stiff arm, with the heads removed will protect everything just as well and will outlive the golfing career of the purchaser. There's a reason that pro's travel with a Club Glove and not a silly hard case. Nobody should be baffled by this, it just makes sense. It looks like VH forgot the stiff arm and to remove the heads. Like Manolo says "he is amateur hours"

I made the mistake of getting a hard case once. Flew into Monterey and it didn’t fit in any rental car. Not even across the back seat or from front to back or corner to corner with the passenger seat down in the biggest car they had. Boy, did I feel (and look) like an idiot.

 

I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “But, I’ve read his posts and he is an idiot.”

 

The rental people were kind enough to let me leave it with them until my return.

I have put my hard case into many different compact cars.

 

I drive this and I can fit my hard case into it. 

 

You need to work on your packing skills.
