Is Ben Hogan’s secret just kinda baseball metaphors?

Recommended Posts

I’m not joking. He liked baseball, sidearm throw. “It’s in the dirt” is how you would describe a low pitch, so hit it.

Would to see the whole video to see setup, BS etc. I'm intrigued

Don’t make it more difficult than it needs to be. Do you know how to swing something? If you do, then take a golf grip and swing it.

Seriously everyone makes it so complex and all these micro moves when it doesn’t need to be.

I do. Was just curious as to your ball position and what your backswing looked like to get you in this position in the down swing. Too much for you don't worry about it, think my game will survive.

You don’t need to square a bat, but if you do the motorcycle drill or set your Wrists, then the clubface squares.

Ball position can change based on the shot/traj you want to hit.

see and his swing is at the ball coming in horizontally or on his belt line, put the baseball bouncing in off the plate and now he tilts to hit the ball... in the dirt.

Also, look how his bat goes from steep to shallow, isn’t that the move everyone harps on? Shallow shallow shallow

I’d say in the simplest terms, to start the downswing, start turning left, and swing hard. Some might need more down, some more out. I’m saying it’s a really really simple building block for a powerful and efficient swing.

if you turned left, and felt like you were gonna hit your right foot Where Hogan had that extra spike installed, You probably wouldn’t hit your foot, but you might flush it.

There shouldn’t have to be any wild thoughts of what your elbows are doing etc, once you’re using the right arm correctly, then it’s rotate to the right, changed directions, rotate left, in your posture inclined to the ground.

Go outside, stand up, swing the club around your belly button. Do the same thing, tilt over into address. Film it if you can. To swing harder, think about how you would recruit your whole body to swing a big ax. But you’d be cutting a tree at the base of it, where it meets the dirt.

This is a kid I’m teaching, this is him after 20 minutes, never played before. Took him to a tree, gave him the same explanation, then hit some balls

The golf swing lies somewhere between batting a baseball and chopping wood.  Each of these acts by itself, however, only completes a small part of the picture.  There just isn't any other physical maneuver quite like a golf swing.     Jackie Burke, 1955.

But similarities in striking can be striking.

I copied this and am going to print copies Thanks

I'm in the NE so it was single digits here today so only went out for about 10 minutes, will hit heated bays soon.

This is what I try to do in my swing, but my problem was not just "swinging the club" for speed but concentrating too much on getting the right elbow tucked where it will just naturally fall in place if u just SWING the club. Going to be a fun spring, thanks again.

Yep! You’ve just got to square the bat.

Saw Milo Lines post about it today as well, the way the bat flattens. What up Milo, invite me out to superstition haha

Yep, you're spot on. That is how to  get the path. Respect sir, for your brilliant explanation. It is indeed the secret.

All decent ball striker does this whether they realize it or not. And so does all of Hogan's competitors. They all just have different styles and idiosyncrasies to square the face through the ball. Which is different in golf from baseball as you've mention that in baseball one needs not to square the face.

So with that swing philosophy in mind, how does one go about controlling the release as Hogan from P6 to P8? Now that is still "Hogan's secret".

Right arm sidearm throw/left hand sweep tag is another baseball term I guess you could apply, those differing  wrist actions, if I’m not mistaken, would allow for a full on fire as hard as you can, throw the right/right arm slamming a car door etc, as long as you continue to rotate left, and swing around you . Belly button area seems to be a easy way to think about it, swinging around that in our forward inclination.

If you’re bored, try doing a sweep tag with your left hand, from right thigh to left thigh. How long can you keep the glove on the ground in a straight(circle has a flat spot 😉 ) line ? If you wanted to arc it off to the left, you’d keep your rotation cruising around. The harder you slap the tag, the harder you can rotate.

Look at the lead wrist action coming up off the ground, slapped the tag finger side(knuckles down) And you can see the puff of dust coming off that in a straight line. Put his right hand flat on the thumb side of his glove, that looks fairly close to 6-8

if you think about a tag though, it simplifies it all, big picture vs micro move know what I mean?

It's pretty much the same thing with a good hockey slapshot. You load your right (or left if you're a lefty)side, then shift your weight as you rotate into the shot and release the stick through the puck. The big difference other than doing this on skates is that the lead hand is halfway down the shaft, but the mechanics of the shot are much like a baseball or golf swing.
