Masters uses TRACK. It’s way better than the Tour’s Shotlink and has continued to improve.

I heard that they had something similar .......the Masters is the gold standard. People swear by the data of shotlink.....is shotlink where they calculate  stokes gained?

Yes the Shotlink data is used to compute all the stroke gained metrics.  I am not sure if the data collected for the Masters is included for those metrics or not.  The data should be included, but ANGC being the way they are about their property it isn't a sure bet.

I know, ANGC want their own of everything....LOL! That's not a bad thing. just wondering about Shotlink ...... while it gives a lot of data, I question its ability to tell the whole story. Do you know if the other majors use shotlink.....?

I don't know sure what all the majors use, but whatever they do use will be equivalent (or better) to Shotlink.  The data provided by Shotlink is more than good enough for computing strokes gained metrics.

Shotlink doesn't follow all the shots, that's one of the reasons that I question the accuracy and wonder if there's something better on the market.....plus there's always the human element.

Actually every shot hit by every player at a tournament every day is measured.  That and the accuracy of the data is what allows the impressive statistical analysis.

I heard an announcer /commentator ......Kirk Byurm say that a player on the seventeenth hole hit a shot so far offline that shotlink couldn't record it......was he wrong.

At certain courses that might happen rarely.  The course is mapped before the tournament.  If someone happens to hit the ball in play, but outside the mapped area, then that shot wouldn't be included.  It would happen very rarely and would have minimal impact on the statistics.

Literally a single data point lol. That doesn't mean it's not accurate for the hundreds of thousands of other shots they capture.

What basis do you have to question the accuracy? PGA tour pros trust the data to formulate their course strategy, what data could possibly be missing? On every single fairway and every single green, there is a multi person team that records every single shot. If someone hits a true foul ball, they can get relatively close, but for the SG calculation those are easy to account for (for the most part it will be a 1 or 2 shot loss)

How can strokes gained account for nerves coming down the back nine on Sundays at ANGC.....

And the mythical shot tracking system  ANGC has can? Lol give me a break with such a silly argument.

Shotlink (and thus SG) is simple, where the ball starts and where the ball ends. SG for any given tournament is only relative to those actually playing the tournament. Same tournament, same course, same conditions. It’s calculated daily and then you get a cumulative value for the entire 4 day event

I would think that the shot value is more important on Sunday than on Thursday. Thursday you're free swinging and Sunday's swing is tight and chaotic. Some players are closers, and some are not..........

In a game where emotions take over, golf is the leader.....IMO

I've simply heard that ANGC has its own shot Tracking system other than Shotlink. Some say it's even more advance. Shotlink admits that its system is a work in progress........where you find the search for knowledge silly, others may find it informational.

I'm pretty clueless about how all this stuff works but just wanted to share one quick story that may be interesting or it may not be.

Was at the Masters 7-8 years ago during a practice round and was standing behind the 18th tee box rght up against the rope. There was a guy in a chair sitting there and he had some sort of device that he was entering information on after each player hit their tee shot. Being the friendly type, I asked him what he was doing and he said he was collecting data. I said what kind of data. His response was that he was collecting data and that's all he could and would tell me. End of conversation.

It’s probably a classified surveillance program with the NSA being stored in massive data centers. You can’t have too much data and they’re not sure how it will be used in the future.

We shouldn’t talk about it.

Wait, there’s someone at the door . . .

😉

Shotlink follows every single shot for every single player. It’s why you can see every single shot in the PGA tour app or on the website. Only exception is multiple course events like this week where only one course has actual location visible to viewers.

It’s a simple laser measurer relayed to the datacenter and data collector inputs the lie.

The Masters have beautiful coverage of their tournament and no secret agenda other than themselves....LOL! If you go to their website and watch from there, it's better than the televised version....IMO   Limited commercial interuption and a calmness like no other, heck even running is no,no, there.....

My objective was to find out if they have a tracking system better than Shotlink and to discuss the merits or benefits to shotlink or strokes gained. It's the latest trend with all the analyst and some swear by it....Shotlink put out a statement that they were working to improve it and expand it to all tours....... In my mind, if you have enough stats you can make them say whatever your viewpoint is.

Now if ANGC got a version, I'm sure that it's the best money can buy.

Well, Curt Byrum need to stop telling the viewer that shotlink can't track some foul balls. even shotlink admit that it's system has flaws......just saying.

With the exception of a very wayward shot, or some anomaly, they system is fine. Go check for yourself. Errors are corrected after the round. Source, I look at this every single week.
