Did you add a sight line to your 2-Ball putter? How'd you do it?

Hey all,

 

I've got a 2-Ball that I'm thinking about adding a black sight line to. I like the idea of black tape -- but I also suspect that it could come off mid-round (if not done correctly). Using a Sharpie would be easy enough, but maybe it smudges easily or fades and looks ratty over time. Whatever the case, what did you use, and how do you get things all lined up properly?

Masking tape to set the line and a sharpie or black touch up paint for the sight line itself. I’ve never had an issue with it fading, bleeding, chipping, or rubbing off. If you get to the point that you want to redo or change it, both are easily removable with a rag and a little acetone. It’s a pretty easy process and looks great if you’re patient. 
 

Without somehow sealing the tape or permanently adhering it to the club head, I would be skeptical about tape’s ability to hold up over time.

I used car detailing tape, and they have stayed on for 2 years and counting.  I figured if I really wanted to make it permanent, I'd go to the Testors enamel.  Sharpie doesn't hold up well in my experience.

Isn't there something in the rules that you can't tape a line onto a putter but as long as it's permanent, like paint, it's legal?  I may be not be remembering it correctly.  and maybe it doesn't matter in this instance anyways.

I have a two ball and tried using a sharpie to help define the top edge of the putter face.   It doesn't last.   I'm going to try Testors paint but would also like to have a straight line back from the face.

Yes. It has to be a permanent fixture or close to it. It might not be an issue and you might be able to get it ruled permissible if it was well fixed to the club head, but I wouldn’t risk it in a competitive round unless I had confirmed it with an official. 
 

Attachments that COULD be permitted…
 

“Attachments to the clubhead (other than the face), such as protective coverings, decorative items or alignment aids, provided the item is semi-permanent. However, such items must not excessively protrude from the clubhead and must conform to the shape of the clubhead. Permanent additions to a clubhead would be considered part of the head and, therefore, the head, in its modified state, would have to conform to Part 2, Section 4 of the Equipment Rules (i.e. for dimensions and “plain in shape”).”

 

I couldn’t find the specific description, but I remember reading a ruling at one point that detailed “semi-permanent” as being a non-reusable attachment that would be destroyed or nearly destroyed in the process of removing it from the club head. It’s why I mentioned permanently affixing the tape, if you went that route, in my first response.

I’m not overly surprised that it didn’t hold up on the club face. Moisture, debris, and contact with the ball could all cause wear pretty quickly. I never had any issues with a Sharpie’d sight line on top of the club head through the “two ball” portion though. I used that exact setup for almost two years before it needed to be redone due to fading.

I didn't use the Sharpie on the face but on the top of the putter along the face edge.   Either way, I'm going to try the paint.

That makes more sense. I should have read the comment a little closer. I really like the idea of defining the top line like that. I’d be curious to see how it turns out!

That's a thought, too. I didn't know they existed. I'll look into that.
