8 iron spinner trick with universal shafts

Recommended Posts

Greetings all.

I got some new component wedges the other day (Maltby Tour Grind MG’s in 52, 56, and 60) and am trying to decide how to shaft them.  I got the club packs with the Score LT shafts, as that’s what I am using in my irons (Maltby STi2’s…I love ‘em).  I tip trimmed the iron shafts halfway between the recommended trim for R/S flex as through experience I found the R to be a touch soft and the S to be a bit too firm.  Trimmed as they are now, my irons are just about perfect for me.

As for the wedges, I could trim them to match my irons, which would be easiest.

I was also thinking I could soft step them down to true R flex (based on the Score LT trimming instructions).

And I had also read about the 8 iron trick, where 8 iron shaft is used for wedges.

My goal is to to get a bit more spin and soft feel from the club.  I am just not 100% sure how to achieve that using a universal shaft like the Score LT.

Any advice or recommendations (aside from “buy different shafts”…I’m just not inclined to do so right now) are appreciated.

Thanks

CG

If your iron shafts are a perfect fit, as you described, and you’re just looking for a softer feel and more spin in your wedges… have you considered tip trimming them to match the flex in your irons, then soft stepping them to get the adjustments you want?

It’s the only way I can see that allows you to make the adjustment you’re looking for while maintaining the progressive, comparable feel and flex from your irons and into wedges.

Hit some partial shots, pitches, and chips with the highest lofted iron in your set, whether it's a "P" or a "G".  If that feels firmer than what you want in your wedges, then build them soft-stepped.  The same tip trim that you used for that highest lofted iron, would produce a soft-step in the wedges, because the hosels and Bottom of Bore to Ground Measurements of the wedges are longer.  They also have heavier head weights.  Both of which increase the flex, with the same shaft build and tip trim

Bach,

I have thought about that.  The only way to do it would be to figure the amount of trim for the flex and soft step, then cut the shaft, as with a universal shaft like the Score LT, the tip is left longer to play softer, and cut shorter to play firmer.

But it is doable.  I can use the trim chart for a starting point, the use the increments between clubs for the steps.  What I really need to know is how much I should step the shaft.

Cwebb,

Thanks for the info.  Currently, my highest lofted iron is a 48*.  On full shots, it feels great.  On partial shots, it could be softer.

My conundrum is that I will be using the 52 primarily as a full swing club, the 56 occasionally as a full swing club but mostly partial, and the 60 will almost never see a full swing.

Of course, if nothing else, the Score LT shaft is not at all expensive, so if I try something and I don’t like it, a few clicks on the Golfworks website and I will have new shafts and ferrules on the way.  I have a shaft puller and torch, so doing a shaft pull is a non issue.

Still, I would like to get it right the first time.

You will NOT gain spin in a wedge by using a softer shaft, we have to go stronger to gain spin

To the OP...if you dont know what the 8 iron spinner trick is, dont use the term, thats how myths is created...

Here you can read what the #8 iron spinner trick is
- DONT misuse that term for something else like you do now

Thanks Howard.

In your opinion what would be the best way to achieve what I am looking for, utilizing a universal/multi flex type shaft?

Thanks

CG

You CANT get there, if you did read the link, you would have known.

The shafts you play has a tip section thats only 6.0 long
You chose to go in the middle of R and S tip trim instruction
That means your #9 iron is already 4.0 (3.5 for R and 4.5 for S)
We need a shaft equal to a dedicated GW for this = 1.0 extra tip trim from #9
That cant be done, since you need at least 1.25 left for insert, pluss the length of the ferrule.

Simply look at your #9 and see how much there is left from the top of the ferrule to first step, and you need a full inch tip trim....thats not possible.
On top of that you want a softer feel, and we cant go stronger and make it feel softer
