How often do you play a round and just forget how to play golf?

Sounds like you divorced your golf game for a while then decided to call her for a quickie for ole-time sake, thinking it wouldn't have consequences. lol.

Like most people, I lose conscious track of my swing if I don't play for a while.  When that happens, it takes me the front 4-5 holes to bring out what's stored in muscle memory.  The most it's taken has been 7-8 holes before it all comes back to me.  That's when I have to play lights out on the rest of the holes to finish with an acceptable number.  When I think my game is lost, I put driver & wd away and pull out 2 & 3 iron on all tees.  For some reason hitting long irons calls my attention and saves the round.

I've never lost my game totally, at least not yet.  Years back my worst score was 87, due to not playing due to a medical issue.

negative..maybe i should start

Not promoting being an alcoholic, but I found having a cold IPA to start off the round and then nurse 1, 2 more throughout the round keeps me on point.  It helps me not overthink and I honestly make some really nice shots.

Positives

Tempo

Rhythm

Second guessing

Freedom throughout the swing

Negatives

Shot selection

Short game focus

Putting

Overall it helps me but there are negatives....

This summer I shot a 74. The swing felt perfect. Couldn't miss. One of those rounds where I wish I could replicate the swing for every time I play.

Then 3 days later, played 36 holes. In the second 18 of the day, shot a nice and awful 100. In my defense, it was hot, humid, the course was soaked, and it was cart-path only. Fat shots, thin shots, couldn't putt.

Lost me at CPO.  I specifically call and ask, if they don't allow at least 90 degree I am out.

Usually about twice a season I have a round that looks like I've never swung a club before. I usually just take a day or two away from the golf course and get it out of my head. Some days are just those days.

I play several times per week and get one of these rounds every 25-30 rounds or so.  I come back the next time and it's back to normal. No idea why it happens.

Yes. Weird.

I'm pretty good, but don't have anywhere near the consistency of the pros. Some days the driver will be spot on but the irons mediocre. Other the putter catches fire, but the wedges not so much. Etc.

Thing is, there are those rare days when absolutely nothing is working. But there are also those (equally rare) days where absolutely everything is working. I have never for the life of me, in all my years as a golfer, figured out what the missing variable is that is responsible for either of the two. Rounds like that sort of just seem to appear without notice.

It happens to all of us. I have a group of friends that play throughout the year and have created a Golf Psycho Award to get a few laughs. You take your highest round of the year and subtract your lowest round of the year. It must be on a course with a par of 70 or higher.

It was my turn this year with a 21 stroke difference. I had a rough day in late August. High humidex, the course was so wet that carts were not allowed and everything seemed to go wrong with my game, the result a 95. I also had the lowest score of the year (74), three days later. Later in the year, one of my friends made a 30 foot par putt on the 18th hole to make 95 and ended up with a 20 difference.

Laugh it off, tee it up again.

Haha, did it twice last season (100+) - once at Pebble (yikes) and once in club tourney,  both as 6.8, lol.

My warmup on the range at Pebble was magical, absolutely magical.

Screams mental game to me!!!!

Screams range pro to me.  Been there done that more times than I care to remember.

A twenty-one stroke difference in three days is most impressive.

I've had a 105 and 73 in the same year. The 105 was in winter at a very difficult course when I had a really bad snap hook. The ground was wet and the grass dormant, so that in some places, particularly around the greens, there were patches of "soft pan", i.e. soft, wet soil with no grass. Think hardpan but wet.

On one short par three, I missed the raised green left and short-sided myself (ball actually spun off the green), and I took about eight shots trying to get the ball on the green from the "soft pan" lie. I eventually banged the ball into the slope with my putter to pop it up on the green. It worked, but ended up yards from the hole and I three-putted for a smooth mega-bogey.

Haha, I don’t spend that much time on the range or look that great on it so I can’t even claim that!

The only practice I participate in, is the local par 3 9 hole muni.  It does some much for my game.

In this order......

Release stress from work, parenting etc

Short irons get into good tempo and rhythm.   Most holes GW and PW.

Chipping (miss some greens)

Mid irons get a little bit a work, maybe 4 - 5 total swings 8 - 6 iron

Greens are a wreck so can't claim much putting, but you get a little.

For me this is structured so much better for me.  Expectations are low and I don't have to sit at a range and fire shots.  I get immediate feedback on my approach shots.

What made the club tourney story above even more frustrating after having no game at all and having just incurred my 6th penalty stroke on 16, lol, I WD'd in my mind (didn't say anything to the group because I was trying to stay somewhat upbeat and go with the century round flow but I wasn't making up 30 strokes the next day, haha) then to add further insult had a lost ball on 18 in a spot where it's impossible to not see your ball and then had to explain why I wasn't driving back to the tee (and all were laughing and cool with it) so that was that ------- after going home and grilling a nice steak and relaxing on the deck, I went back out at dusk, tossed 3 or 4 clubs out of the bag to make it lighter and stalked out on foot on the front nine.  Finished in the dark 1 over (yep) on the front and went home.

Oh yeah, the late evening round --- focused on the PSR I had abandoned earlier in the day, focused on consistent putting routine I had abandoned earlier in the day, quiet walk all by myself only person on the course, etc. It's MENTAL!

True story - don't play for a living, no aspect of my game is bullet proof and to me that just points out how much whatever it is that can get in our head can affect our game one way and then another way an hour or a few hours later.

Almost all of my practice is with wedges.  I despise practicing putting and full swing I just don't work on enough, but when I do it's more hitting 100 yard 7 or 8 irons and then a few full swing shots alternating clubs through the bag, which is more warmup than anything. So not ingraining swing changes has a lot to do with inconsistency in general and under, lol, "pressure".

I'm a 2 and in the first for fun tournament of the year threw down a shocking 90. It wasn't nerves or anything and I had a wonderful time, but the wheels just came off the bus for whatever reason that day. The very next day I played and was something like -3 after 12.

Here are a selection of quotes from the day

From the tee: "1 in 2 out.. 3 in 4 out.. ok so this one is for 5"

"Wow that was actually an 8"

All that being said, it's best to just pretend it never happened and move on, golf is a funny game

Uh.....PT, muscles don't have a memory. Only your brain can do that.

3 -5 times a season, I wake up feeling great, get to the course, hit some balls and it feels like I have never done it before. Get pissed hit more balls, doesn't get any better. Go out and shoot 95. Next day 78 to 82. Some of my best rounds are cold no warm up, just swing smooth and easy down the middle.
