How often do you play a round and just forget how to play golf?

I always seem to get a nice mid/late summer slump and it's probably from playing too much and not practicing at all tbh. I'm around scratch but have thrown up some low to mid 80s the last couple of times out. Irons were working great to start the season and my driver was iffy, worked on that a ton and then had driver going well into tournament season and then irons were low and weak and the short game abandoned me.

 

In years past this would freak me out, I'd play more and then drive myself into the ground trying to figure it out. This time around, I took a few days off, got back to just chipping and pitching and then actually practiced for the first time since season started. The swing feels the best its felt all season last couple of rounds and even looks good on video. Funny game. My favorite way to practice is to just do a late twilight round when you're the only one out there and hit a bunch of balls on course, this usually straightens my game out.

 

All in all, I'd say every 15-20 rounds or so, something gets out of wack and then I go back to the drawing board for some new feels.

Haha, on a cost per stroke basis - win!  We may be in the area again next year but I'm a little torn on whether I'd play again if I get the opportunity - I enjoyed the experience, saw the course, met Jim Nantz (!) - on the other hand, $$$$.   Who am I kidding, I'd be thanking them for taking my money!

I'm looking to spend my 50th birthday in June out there. Play Pebble, Spyglass and Spanish Bay. It will be pricey, but I figure it's probably a once in a lifetime experience, so just do it right. It's only money, I'll make more.

I didn’t go over 100 for six years.

A year and a half ago I lost my swing and have been battling to break 100 since.  
I’ve filmed myself, changed my grip, back swing, stance, everything.  It’s reaching desperation mode.

 

I might have to give in a take a lesson to start from scratch again.

That would be best, IMO. 

 

Band aid over band aid over band aid and just trying to cover up the initial wound, usually leads to a disaster. Time to remove them and have the swing surgically repaired.

I've pretty well always been a steep/digger player, but there are times when all I have a feeling for is trying to throw the clubhead at the ball and bury the blade into the turf.  It can happen for a few holes or until I usually play some longer ones and don't need to hit an iron, or a par3 where I tee it up to try and break out of that funky feels. 

 

Being a decent player and having the feeling of forgetting how to do something that is reasonably repeatable is beyond frustrating. 

 

Stick with it, maybe right down some little thoughts or feelings of when you're playing well and have it to fall back on when the oddities creep up.
