I heard the same podcast and let's remember: you've got two professional golfers of dubious achievement taking the side of someone (Rich Beem) who apparently wasn't thrilled with some of the content contained in "Blood, Sweat and Tees," Alan Shipnuck's inside look at the PGA Tour, focusing on Beem and his late caddy, wildman Steve Duplantis.  Shipnuck was given tons of access and he simply reported on what took place, including late-night carousing, unprofessional behavior by both player and caddy, etc.  ONCE AGAIN, this is someone taking unnecessary offense at a reporter for reporting.  

 

For years, Alan Shipnuck has been one of the most respected and dedicated chroniclers of the PGA Tour -- first at Sports Illustrated and then at Golf Magazine and if a handful of golfers don't like what they read it's only because he's describing to the reading public what actually takes place.  Notice that none of these complainers dispute the accuracy of the journalist; they simply don't like to be profiled as Actual Human Beings.

 

And now here's Phil Mickelson, using the tired and lame "I thought I was off the record" excuse.  NOT denying that he ripped the Saudis, mind you, but completely fabricating a cop-out based upon a flat out lie.  Both in print and in a Fire Pit Collective podcast, Shipnuck CLEARLY points out how the conversation took place -- Mickelson called him -- and there was no talk of his diatribe being confidential, off-the-record, on background or "just between you and me."  

 

I'm with Alan Shipnuck, one of the best at letting us readers and golf fans get deeper inside the PGA Tour.

Phil is gonna get boo'd thoroughly and heavily whenever he plays for a year or more. And every time he does the tour gets to look like the good guys

 

They shouldn't suspend him, they should force him to play. Like the pic you posted, it's basically Cersei walking through the streets of King's Landing.

 

It's classic Phil at the end of the day. Totally misread the situation. He was one of many who did it, but he chose to be the nail that stood up--not smart

Well, no but I do believe that Mickelson was quoted correctly.  He hasn't disputed a single word.  I also believe that he (and his Public Relations "team") were behind every word of the "apology" published on Tuesday.  You know, the one that begged forgiveness from his new pals in Saudi Arabia, the ones using sportswashing to help clean the blood off the bonesaw.  Do I also believe that Mickelson has contributed greatly to various charities, signs autographs and tips well? 

You bet.  Further proof that Phil Mickelson is a two-faced phony.  Old news, I know, but further confirmation.

Ha! I did fall out of a moving car and directly onto my head when I was a kid so…

 

But, barring any new, more bizarro revelations, the total beating that Phil is getting is punishment enough.

 

As long as he doesn’t join the SGL, I think he has given enough to the tour and the fans for it to remain his home. 
 

And You know, maybe his quote to AS was his subconscious sabotaging his own possible deal with the SGL. 
 

I really think he needs to reach out to Tiger. That’s the guy who can pick up the phone and talk to anybody and everybody needed to fix him up.

As much of a supporter as I've been of Phil's he really screwed the pooch on this one. But we're a very forgiving society. Just remember the beating tiger took back in 09.

Only problem with that comparison is TW post '09 had 11 wins and a major.  I don't think Phil has anywhere near that level of comeback left in him.  But to your point, by the end of this year (likely much sooner) no one will care and Phil will be teeing it up here and there (if not in Saudi).   Will we see him at Augusta this year?  Doubt it.  Next year?  Maybe.  And he can kiss that RC captaincy goodbye.  No matter how fans will be forgiving it is going to be a long time before fellow golfers give him anything but the courtesy nod.

Yes, I believe you're probably right on all points. I also don't think he'll be sitting in the booth which many thought would be a sure thing.

I still maintain that the thing was handled horribly with the bunker mentality and having Steiny run the show instead what could have been a much better PR/damage control/rehab image approach Tiger could have and should have used but I look at him then as having been handled his whole life up to and including that whole mess and out of control in his personal life and he sure wasn't in any position as a mature adult, lol, which he really wasn't, to sit back and figure out what to do, so . . . Steiny.  I know at least a couple dozen people personally who aren't even in the business that could have come up with better strategy in that situation -- common sense and some ability to relate to actual people.  I'd bet you know a couple dozen, etc.  It played out weird and awkward from start to finish.  

 

Phil's statement took me back to that in a way --- defensive, playing the victim (laughable and remember Tiger's sex addiction thing, haha) not really copping to much of anything other than letting down his LIV/Saudi partners, written by Phil and likely a lawyer and/or agent --- no real sense that he gets how bad things are and of his own making.  Phil's a grownup and has always loved himself for being clever in his golfing and business life.

 

Big difference for me is Tiger's thing was personal life and this is Phil's professional/public life.

 

I'm interested in seeing how Phil gets back if he wants to and how he goes about it and how much it is for real when he does.  It's possible!

I'm just messing around a bit but like i've mentioned, Phil was hardly the only one who spoke to the Saudis, he just went the furthest and openly talked about it.

 

And most people are greedy. I mean i don't want to sidetrack this whole thing with talk that will get us in trouble...I mean we should condemn it yada yada yada...but after a while it's like draining a flooded house with a spoon

Phil just blatantly stated the facts about the people he was doing business with. And many institutions, sports and otherwise, athletes, stars, and many of our biggest brands are really just doing what Phil was doing but looking the other way. 

 

Heck, all of us posting here is using a phone and our houses are loaded with merchandise made by or in partnership with the very entities or similar we sanctimoniously are shunning Phil for!
