The Daryl Morey tweet and it's aftermath is one of the most blatant examples of hypocrisy you could find on this topic in pretty much the whole modern era.

 

People saying Phil is "seemingly" apologizing to the Saudis...a few years ago superstars and billionaire owners literally did apologize in writing for that tweet just so their salary cap wouldn't go down

The devil in me is kinda enjoying watching this train wreck.  Phil has always had a David Sims vibe to me and I’m pleasantly surprised to see him finally getting a bite of humble pie.

It may be terrible in yours and others eyes but as the saying goes "You reap what you sow." Phil is currently paying a deserved price for his actions.

 

As well he should. I think Phil's current situation can be summed up by this phrase from noted philosopher Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.

 

Bow down before the one you serve. You're going to get what you deserve.

 

Phil is rightly getting what he deserves for bowing down to the Saudis.

Why couldn’t he just keep his big mouth shut? He needs to hold his cards closer to his chest. Reminds me of a certain politician that I really liked who did a lot of good but needed to have his Twitter account taken away so people wouldn’t hear the stupid things he would sometimes say. I’m not a huge fan of this kind of crap on social media. It’s OK for Phil to think those things, just don’t go spouting off to everybody as it is obviously come back to bite him.

First mistake Phil made was telling the truth. Second mistake he made was apologizing for telling the truth.

One of the most liked players on Tour especially after the PGA win has truly fallen from the upper echelons.  This is one of the biggest falls from grace that I can remember.  I've been a huge Phil fan since his college days and I found his comments and recent actions repulsive.

Total speculation of course, but maybe Callaway is waiting for a "better" apology or some future actions on Phil's part -- I would have been surprised if they dumped him.  Maybe the legal teams on both sides are taking a look at buyout, how to continue, who knows --- he may not go quietly on that one and maybe has a contract that doesn't require him to just go quietly.

 

His pic is now nowhere to be found on Callaway's website, so that's telling.  And you can get a PM grind but I'm not seeing his name attached to it, but just gave a cursory look.  He's been "washed". 😉

 

I'd differ with a notion that this is just Phil getting in trouble for speaking his mind - lot more to it, but I'd wholeheartedly agree that fans, etc. have an incredibly short attention span and I doubt if it will take much in any real way for Phil to make a "comeback".  A few pics of him smiling with some other players, a more intelligent press release, he and Monahan enjoying some Texas hold 'em in a club room somewhere ---- probably not any time soon but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if along about Masters time the tide turns a little.

 

Now, that may mean that Norman recedes back into the reef and the threat is really over and at the moment he seems determined to make the worst of a bad situation for him.  The more he rants, the longer it will take for Phil to get back.

 

And maybe Phil really doesn't want to get back? Hard to believe that, but who knows . . .

It's the irony or all ironies that the phrase people most associate with this whole, sorry saga and Phil's fall from grace is the one Mickelson himself levelled at the PGA Tour: 

 

'Obnoxious greed.'

It’s been less than 4 weeks since “obnoxious greed”. Phil could have survived that. He may have faced some serious grief from the tour but he wouldn’t be facing this total vaporization. 
 

The insane thing is it’s been ONE week since the “scary m-ers “ comment was released and he’s banished persona non grata bordering on his legacy being tossed into a “memory hole” a la Winston Smith. 
 

Unimaginable the path forward but I hope to be pleasantly surprised that there is some reasonable sequence possible for Phil to reclaim his place in golf.

To all the people mentioning China or other countries and human rights.  I don't think this is just about Saudi money.  A bunch of pros just took appearance money and played over there, and nobody really got too much crap about it.  F1 has a race in Saudi Arabia, the drivers put politically correct messages on their helmets, and nobody really cares too much.  I think most people understand that money talks.  It's easy for some people to criticize rich people for taking 7-8 figure paydays, but most people understand.  That's my position.  I'm not going to destroy a pro golfer for taking a lot of money to go play golf.

 

 

These are the problems I have with Phil.

 

1) This whole fiasco was ridiculously stupid on his part.  He portrays himself as a shrewd and clever, the smartest guy in the room, and this just blew up in his face.  But to openly express "I'm not ignorant to the human rights but I don't care"  was the peak of stupidity and arrogance.  And then the apology, directed at the Saudi's more than anyone else, was even stupider.  He's lost $50 million a year in endorsements and blew up all sorts of bridges in the process.  For what?  If he's such a shrewd businessman, the Saudis need to be paying him hundreds of millions to break even. 

 

2) Most of his claims about the tour are just plain wrong.  The numbers he cites- like the hundreds of millions the tour is hoarding, or the paltry percent that the tour gives back to players, is just plain wrong. There are no "owners" like in other pro sports.  I'm sure they are paying a lot of money to the Monahan and probably wasting money or losing opportunities here and there.  There are probably ways the product could be better and make more money.  But nobody is hoarding billions of dollars out of greed.    

 

3) He claims he's doing it for the good of the tour and is making himself out to be a freedom fighter and victim, but its all about money.  You can argue that competition is good, and a competing tour is not bad for golf.  But he wants more money and It was never about anything else.  If he just said this upfront, most people don't have a huge issue with it.  He believes that superstars like him carry the tour and should get paid more money.  As in any other sport, there's a conflict between the superstars who people pay to see and the role players who are necessary to produce the product.  So I'm sure he doesn't mind taking money from the #20, 40, 100 guys to pay the top 5 guys more. Of course he doesn't say that, because he wants those lesser players to think he's fighting for them.  If the money doesn't come from lesser players, it still has to come from somewhere, whether its charity, feeder tours (Korn Ferry), the Champions tour, outreach programs.  But this "for the good of the tour" thing disingenuous.  He is already getting the superstar money that the lesser players aren't getting!  He literally makes $50 million a yearin endorsements (which do not go to lesser players) which he makes because he beat lesser players the past 20 years.  He just got paid $10 million for the PIP.  

 

I really think that he thinks he's so much smarter than the tour and that he could make billions off his twitter or NFTs or something like that.  But see point #1.  He's really not being that bright at all.
