A little love for Phil

I would agree argubly, he will always be at best #2 in my mind, there is that 18 Majors thing.

I always say arguably because of Jack. Either works IMO. I just go with Tiger because I watched him in his prime. A little too young to say the same of Jack. I know that doesn’t change his accomplishments. Just human nature to associate more with what you’ve personally witnessed 🤷🏼‍♂️

I made the comparison between Tiger and Ben Franklin earlier.

BF shagged his way with spectacular infidelity across the colonies and France.

Nobody makes a big deal out of it and it detracts nothing substantial from his legacy.

But can you imagine if Ben Franklin sent King G an advance copy of the Declaration of Independence?!

Or Tiger was busted reportedly hiring lawyers to work with the Saudi’s to build a competitor to the pga tour?! And then was quoted calling them “m-ers”!

So, there quite a distinction here.

That said, I believe that people know Phil is Phil and, given he’s devoted a lifetime to the game and provided us with so much fun, he will have a chance to regain his status in the game.

Going to be interesting to find out where  Phil's legacy will finally rest.

I do zero social media by choice, just enjoy reading fellow golfer's take on things related to golf. Phil's public persona will take a hit ( that is what woke does ) and I don't care one way or the other.

I know Phil's FIGJAM rep gets in the way of his behind the scenes do good stuff.

Fair enough, I caught Jack towards the end of his career and  TW in his prime.

Regardless who “the best ever” is. My initial point was you can’t gauge another current golfers (Phil’s) return to ‘fan acceptance’ after a controversy, by Tigers. Because Tiger is arguably the best ever and on a completely different level.

*guessing there are 10,000+ pages here regarding Tiger or Jack.

You have to have that ridiculous level of confidence in yourself to make it that far, they never doubt themselves and what allows them to utilize their talent when the pressure is on.  It's probably more of the exception to find these humble mega stars.  So that also means a lot of these mega stars have outsized sense of importance and severely misguided opinions at times.

Hughes Norton touched on this - and Old Man Norman specifically - in his spectacular interview on the NLU podcast. Definitely worth a listen if you haven't already.

Jack has the most majors. That makes him the GOAT.

But there’s no question who the *best to ever tee it up is.

Dont make me pull the Trevino and Watson quotes where they say it!

I never saw Nicklaus play because i'm 40. But Tiger reached a level where winning in some situations was an actual certainty. I've never seen that with anyone other than Michael Jordan 1991-1998 (Sidenote--People who think Lebron deserves GOAT status need to know Lebron has never reached that level--Michael was unbeatable during that run---unbeatable. I understand the prolonged excellence argument, but i digress....In 1997 you only watched the games to see how the Bulls would win, there was never doubt they would)

I remember Torrey Pines when Tiger won with the amputated leg. I still remember i was only half-watching that last putt to force OT, while making dinner. There really was no doubt at that point that he would make it. Like literally zero doubt.

It really is a weirdly similar debate, with Lebron equal to Nicklaus and Jordan to Tiger.  I know Jordan has 6 championships, but the debate is really what makes you the GOAT is it how good are you at your peak or how long are you able to sustain greatness.  Jack and Lebron no doubt sustained it for longer and more consistently over the long-term, but the absolute peak that Jordan and Tiger got to is what makes me think of them as the GOATs.

Oh yeah. I remember watching it with my ex-wife - who HATED Tiger and was really pulling for Rocco - and I was like "There's no chance he misses this. Just none. This is going to a play off."

When the ball was about halfway to the cup, she just gets up and leaves the room without a word while I'm all "WOOOOOOOO!!!!"

I think you meant to use a different word than amputated in describing Tiger’s leg.

It's a joke, over the years here we have always greatly exaggerated how bad his leg injury was.

Morally wrong? You betcha

Morally? Morally ok for KPMG to take hundreds of millions in business from the same folks? Every company that does business in areas of the world that have poor human rights positions should be cancelled, just like folks are cancelling Phil. It is hypocritical to say the least.  If anyone read the whole article it was clear that Phil was creating leverage to apply pressure to the PGA Tour to benefit all players. Again he is an independent contractor and came at this from a strange angle but it is done. So let's cancel, Nike, KPMG, and every other company in bed with the bad guys.

Phil didn't get canceled by anyone except his sponsors and he's 100% to blame.  This not the cancel culture at work.

Phil made some very controversial statements about The PGA Tour and Saudi's, miring him negatively in controversy with big money people. Most businesses don't want their products associated with negative controversy.  KPMG does business with the Saudi's so Phil offended one of KPMG's customers, so distancing themselves from Phil was needed pretty clearly.  Callaway is a big partner with the PGA Tour, so distancing themselves from Phil was needed pretty clearly.

As for in bed with the bad guys, we have a global economy so it's hard to insulate completely from the bad guys. But it's a whole different matter to come out and say, you helped the bad guys and then stand shoulder to shoulder with them for PR ops so they can improve their image and help obfuscate their deployable human rights policies.

For a company like KPMG, the amount of revenue from countries like Saudi Arabia is probably non-material, they make the majority of their revenues in large developed economies/markers. They aren’t going to turn down the business but they aren’t going to make decisions based on a non-material amount of revenue.

Is it strange to anyone that a handful of guys came forward and stated their allegiance to the PGA Tour?

I can hear the pressure from PGA Tour headquarters… “guys you are rumoured to be contemplating leaving, clarify your position publicly or else”

Many people and the SGL itself have underestimated the acumen of the players.

They don’t, as Phil does, just think of the tour as some Mafia collecting a vig on them.

They are able to consider it objectively. Sure, they could make a bigger cut. They could jump to the SGL dangling cash in their faces. Heck, they could take their level of player organization to the next level and assemble a team of consultants to assess and propose a harder line on the tour for more of the action.

But that’s the point. This is *their business. They are invested in its success.

Leaving the tour devalues the value of the tour. It will immediately harm it, cause long term damage, possibly destroy it.

And while some are willing to do that, good to see the most productive members are not. Or at least not so short sighted that they will do so for a few years pay guaranteed up front.

KPMG Saudi Arabia 2021 revenue of over $200 million and forecast just a bit lower for 2022. Not chump change.

Compared to global KPMG revenue of $32 billion. Most accounting forms consider amounts less than 1% of total revenue to be immaterial.

Exactly, $200mm is a lot of money and clearly no firm wants to ever lose revenue, but they aren’t making a decision to part with one of their biggest endorsers to appease 0.6% of their revenue stream.

They don’t see it that way.

Of 32B, 20 Billion comes from non-Americas.

14 Billion from what they bucket EMEA (Europe, ME, Africa). Internationals break out their business this way and strategy and leadership focuses this way.  These are high growth regions and they are very keen on nurturing this business.

Phils comments dont only alienate one country. They alienate an entire high growth region within EMEA.

Certainly not “immaterial” ; )
