Vokey V grind - what’s the deal?!

suuch

Recommended Posts

Like most.... I’ve been loyal to Vokey for going on 2 decades, played a v sole when they first were offered and loved them. Ever since they dropped the V I’ve tried the M,F,S in the 56 and it just hasn’t been the same. I play the 60D and love it for most uses, but when I get to different scenarios I feel like I need the V in the 56.

Currently have an S grind sm8 that needs to be replaced. I took a trip to the ‘bay and found a decent one on there... question is, will Vokey bring back the V grind? I don’t even care if it’s in WW & the price tag. I prefer the raw look anyways so being a wrxer & hater of my hard earned money. It will cost....

Some of you may have seen Billy Ho’s most recent WITB has a V grind in it. Any inside scoop on what my be sold for to us normies??

I’ve tried F, M, & last year played primarily S grind. F in a sand wedge in our bunkers is no good, too many wet/firm bunkers with poor sand. M just didn’t have enough bounce to get out of the sand. So the S was a reasonable next choice and I just didn’t like it. Never felt like I hit a good ball with a 56 in my hand all year, pitch, chip, approach.

I guess I was “forced” that way due to no available V grinds...

Threw a 60D as a lob last year and it made the game much easier. Felt automatic around the greens with all of the bounce and sole I had to play with. Was not a great bunker club, but was my best option.

I guess the perpetual search to find the bag that’s most optimized is what has me searching again for more V grind. The sand wedge was the weak point last year, time to find a solution. Hoping that WW comes out with another.... also looks like Edel may be worth a look...

What is the V grind?  It looks like an M or something similar to me.

The bounce is more forward on the sole than the D or M. Actually has more bounce than most all other Vokeys. Best way to describe it is a alllmost a V sole that you would see in an iron, but with some relief on heel & toe.

Reasons I like it are, versatility, high bounce, & I seem to get lower trajectory on approach. I think that has to do with where I strike it- think lower on the face with all of that bounce.

If it's not available have you thought about the D in the 56 as well?  If you love it in the 60 and seem to prefer higher bounce....wouldn't that solve the problem?

I know what you mean, I went through a phase of carrying a 54M and 56S at the same time.

The S was fine for chipping and from sand but no use elsewhere for me.

Its hard to get the balance right. I’ve settled with the 54M but could do with something more versatile in the 60. Having something usable on approach shots in that 54-56 range is essential.

It would be great to be able to at least try the V or T grinds.

It’s definitely something I’ve given thought to. My golf game works best when I simplify and have x number of shots covered by different clubs. Small brain and playing rather than practicing result in the need to simplify.

here’s a comparison of grinds. Similar but different

It really is about finding a balance between clubs & situations. The V feels like the best compromise in that “slot” for me. Funny how you like chipping and sand with the S where I felt the exact opposite! Different strokes and folks..

I did snag a V grind on the ‘bay which I’m excited to put back in the lineup. I see myself wearing it out quickly- so this is a temporary solution..

You can get the V Grind through Vokey's Hand Ground program on any M Grind. It was available with the SM8s but I really hope they expand the "Wedgeworks Grinds" with the SM9s. I would love to see them release the T, Low Bounce K, A, V and lower loft (54/52/50) M Grinds as standard Wedgeworks Grinds and not as limited editions. Just like they did the the low bounce K and T in the SM8s.

So wait, you are staying loyal to a company that you can't play a wedge in their current lineup?  I see comments that you were forced to play this or that and these options are ok here, but horrible there, and yet you continue to play their equipment?  I thought I was hard headed, but you have me beat.

I too play a V sole wedge, and I play it in all of my wedges, 46,50,54,60.  I just play it in a company that makes what my game prefers.  I have nothing against Vokey, now the other named guy at that company is a different story.  I have played Cleveland wedges for most of my golf career, but if I couldn't get the V sole in a wedge tomorrow and could in Vokey or Edel, or Callaway, I would be playing one of them in an instant.   Luckily since I play my wedges at a much longer length, I could get a raw head and just grind off what was needed to make a V sole instead of porting them in the back to remove weight, but that's a lot of work when there are stock options that had what I want and I am NOT the best wedge grinder.

I think it’s just a matter of how many people fit into it.  You can’t offer every grind under the planet and I think the bulk of people that fit the V grind will fit into either an M or D.  It’s really easy to turn an M grind into a D if you can find someone that knows what they’re doing.  They just have to grind extra bounce to the leading part of the sole.

I personally have played the V grind in the past but have found the D grind fits me better because of the little extra bounce, especially when it comes to grainy lies.
