18 Birdies or the Grint?

Recommended Posts

Hey! Totally fed up with SkyCaddie and their mobile apps and need to get away from them and never look back. Looking for some opinions on which app you prefer, 18 Birdies or the Grint? Which one are you using and why? Which one is better for keeping track of all your stats and scores for each round? What do you like or dislike about either one? Really appreciate anyone willing to take some time to offer some feedback. Thanks so much!

I use the the Grint. I can’t help with the other one. It is easy to use. It gives you lots of stats. More than  need. The GPS is accurate. You can an official handicap for a fee.

I use The Grint, but lack of compatibility with My Galaxy Watch 3rd gen has me looking at other options. Otherwise, I've been happy with it. GPS is good. Course maps are good. Tracking scores also good. Stats are very easy to track if you take the time to enter all of your data during the round (which I don't). Shot distance tracking also takes a little more time than I would like. So I am not using it to it's full potential and could probably get by with less. I need: scoring, GPS distances, and a general idea of my scoring average/handicap for purely egotistic purposes and monitoring my progress.

I've seen a lot about the Grint. Why do you prefer the Grint over the others? I don't really use any apps but want to start.

I just find it simple to use. The GPS is accurate. I like the stats you can use

Lot's to consider. What are the main features that you use/want in an app? Stats, GPS, shot tracking, overhead views, social media, etc, etc. Rank what is most important for you and then maybe someone can come up with a good recommendation. Also need to indicate whether you are looking for a free app, low cost (<$20/yr) or are willing to pay for premium features and how much?

Like the last post, really need to decide what you want.

My experience with The Grint.

Very good. But I don't use all the features.

I'm a PRO member but I don't use the phone club tracking.

why? just to much work to be clicking the phone at each location I hit a ball to mark ball locations. I have no interest in that task when golfing.

What The Grint does well is track a fair amount of data just from scores, putts, sand, FIR, GIR, 1st putt dist length.

That is really easy to do at the end of each hole.

Never used 19Birdies so no opinion there. Sorry.

GPS flyover is an underrated feature of The Grint. I play a lot of courses for the first time and I love previewing them before I go. You can take notes and save them on each hole.

Grint give you an official HDCP, don't think any other app have that.  You can also set up your own tournament with live scoreboard, we did one with Ryder Cup format which is pretty fun.

Able to playing ina local Grint tournament is also a plus.

Im trying to figure out how to do that.  It keeps showing the distance from my house, where I am.  How do I get away from that, and just see distance from the tee? Thanks.

Edit, it seems to be because I live on the course.  The greens that are closer than 1000 yards are coming up live as if I’m playing them.  😕

Don't start a new round, go to 'Courses' instead.

Search for your course, or choose it from your My Courses list.

Tap on it.

A page with three tabs should open.

On the top right of that page is a blue crosshair/compass icon.

Click on the blue icon, and select your tee color.

That will start your flyover.

Yeah, that's the one issue I have with flyovers. They only allow you one intermediate point to move around. So sometimes you have to really fuss with it to get meaningful numbers, like on some oddly shaped doglegs.

That, and the desktop version of it is completely different and almost useless.

TheGrint is better hands down. You also can upload right to GHIN which is really nice if you have a handicap through them. If not you can get one through the app.

That's pretty good if you get a legit GHIN handicap for the $40 yearly fee. Most clubs around here are between $50-$60.

Right but even though I have my GHIN through my club I can still upload directly to it from TheGrint. I don't have to enter my score a second time.

I use TheGrint all the time.  Easy to use, keeps stats without pain, can directly post scores for USGA handicap if you want.  I've tried to use 18birdies because they have a bunch of game scoring that TheGrint doesn't.  E.g. my group likes to play Wolf, but I've had a very hard time figuring out how to use it.  They have Vegas, 6s, 9s, stableford (but you can set your own points scheme) etc, so it seems promising, but IMHO it needs to be simplier to keep score for multiple games when out on the course.

I know I am in the minority here but I am going to post this anyways...

I have TheGrint and really enjoy it. I really hate that I have to take out my phone every hole to input data and I realize there is the Apple Watch to prevent this, but I am an Android enthusiast...I ordered a Galaxy Watch 4 (runs wearOS) and I have seen that TheGrint works on the GW4 (even though there is nothing on TheGrint's website stating this). I currently have a GW3 which doesnt have the Play Store, so just waiting on the GW4 to get here and I will post how the app is on the new watch.

I like golf. A lot.
