Throwing Trash on 16 WM Phoenix Open

Surprised this is even debatable but it’s a new world and some think it’s fine to throw trash all over a golf hole.  I’m against it regardless of what hole/tournament it is.  Wanted to see how many actually thought what happened was fine.

It’s not quite a tradition unlike any other, but it does go back quite a few years.  Ben Hogan fans left quite a mess on the public streets:

LOL! .......took them weeks to clean up that slippery mess.....that stuff could have put out an eye. (sarcasm)

I don't understand why some people are making a big deal of a little debris on the golf course.....

I think they will start handing out like puffy things for the crowd to chuck on the course next year.

 

The beer cans are dangerous and nothing worse I imagine than warm beer soaked in the grass festering,

Fully acceptable on this particular hole. It's called the waste management. At least the cans will be properly recycled. If it spreads to any other course or any other hole I would have concerns.

Ortiz said he was nailed pretty hard by a can after his HIO. Was the person trying to hit him? Irrelevant, totally unacceptable.

Full tall boys rained down on two hole in ones.  This wasn’t empty cans. It was making divots in the green. And spewing beer.  
 

they pelted the players on the tee boxes at the same time.  Most didn’t get hit. But some here said “ it wasn’t on purpose. So it’s cool “. 🤦‍♂️

Golf balls into the crowd is ten times more dangerous....Some not even yelling FORE!

Oh man that's not cool. I was busy making nachos for the super bowl....Haven't watched a ton of golf lately.

 

Hopefully the saudis can address stuff like this when they are operating the tour

It's the Tours tournament.  It's their decision what they let the fans do in celebration.

You have to realize this is Arizona, the twilight zone state. I moved to this wacko state a long time ago (not a choice, I was young) and nothing, I repeat nothing that happens in this state would surprise me. It's just a magnet for the mentally ill, the scum of America, and people who are thrown out of their original state. They brag about the goofy par 3 where players hit close or get booed by drunks. But it's great golf course.

I don't thinks it's as cut and dried as the poll would have you believe. 

 

Right or wrong the WM Phoenix Open is a big deal for the PGA Tour.  This latest tournament was a MAJOR success precisely because of the mayhem on Hole 16.  People are still talking about it.  (just look at this thread)  People that don't care a jot about golf go to this tournament, and even better, they tune in before the Super Bowl to watch.  They are hoping something crazy happens.  The 16th hole is set up intentionally to create an environment where crazy happens.  The players are fully aware of this and they have no problem teeing it up in front of this crazy scene.  And in fact help to raise the level of crazy.

 

Did the fans get out of hand?  Absolutely.  Was it dangerous.  NO doubt.  Did it make for brilliant television?  Absolutely.  Did it hurt the game?  Not a bit.  No one is throwing beer at the Masters or the Open Championship.  The WM Phoenix Open is a different beast and it has been for 20 years.  Does the WM Phoenix Open get people interested in golf that don't usually care about golf.  Absolutely.  Is the tournament FUN?  My goodness yes!

 

The real question everyone should be asking is how does the PGA Tour take the good things the WM Phoenix Open gives to the game, but moderate the bad things that can, and did happen?

Sometimes people throw things in celebration when overcome by the moment.  It happened with Tiger in '97, it also happened with Molinari in 2015.  Seems like it's a thing at this particular tournament at this particular hole.

 

I mean geez, imagine Jack's legacy if he had hurt someone.

Seriously. It’s been discussed at nauseam in the WM tourney thread. Not much else to say. Now that someone has insulted the entire state of AZ and mask wearing has been brought up… Just a matter of time.
