michigan trip in july - where to stay, courses, where to go out

my friend is getting married and he's doing a mini bachelor.  likely 4 guys.  looking to go to michigan to stay and play.

it's a short drive for us (canada) but for some reason i've never been.  looking for suggestions on where to play, and what area to stay in.  we would either stay at an airbnb or on resort if it made sense.

i'm obviously aware of arcadia bluffs but leaving it open to you guys for any suggestions you may have.  it would be a thursday-sunday trip.

 

given some aren't huge golfers arcadia would probably be on the top end of the budget per round if that helps.

Coming from Canada, you may want to check out Shepherd's Hollow in Clarkston.   It's definitely a course with an up north feel.    If you are wanting to stay in the Detroit area check out Greystone and Westwynd.    All three are destination worthy.

coming from the GTA, so don't wanna venture too far in if we don't have to

Assuming you would enter through Sarnia, you could (time from border):

Shepard's Hollow (1 Hour).  Not sure what other courses to play.

Stay and play at Eagle Eye/Hawk Hollow/Timber Ridge in Lansing (2 Hours)

Stay and Play in Mt. Pleasant - play (2.5 Hours)

Stay and play at Gull Lake View (3 Hours)

There's a significant milage difference playing courses in Northern Michigan (i.e. Arcadia) vs. those in S.E. Michigan.  Which are plentiful, with multiple price points, and solid courses.  You're not going to find a "resort" in the area that I'm aware of, but finding lodging shouldn't be difficult.  Quick search has Airbnb's around Romeo.  Would surmise there are additional ones around PH  and along the St. Clair River.  Since the area is relatively local, don't have an awareness of lodging options.  

 

Closest point of entry from GTA would be crossing at Sarnia/Port Huron.  Easy drive from GTA once you reach 402.  Several courses in that area, Rattle Run was a decent course.  But its been a number of years since I've played it.  A solid area for golf would be the greater Romeo area.  The Orchards, Heather Hills (a great value course), Greystone.  North of Rochester (within half hour of Romeo), there's Blackstone, Westwynd, even Stoney Creek Metro Park is decent.  Start by googling golf near Romeo (northern Macomb county), Rochester (Oakland County), Port Huron (St. Clair county) and investigate your options.  

 

It's always with reservation to offer specific recommendations.  What one considers a good golf course is another's slumming course.  But there are plenty of options to play nice courses, sufficient to occupy a 4 day trip, without driving several hundred additional miles, in the areas mentioned above.

If you are coming in through Port Huron you could always take 69 across and play Eagle Eye and Hawk Hollow. Stay in East Lansing and you’ll have all the partying you could want for a bachelor party and there are a few other good courses in the area.

Are there any “cottage” towns that are on the water that aren’t too far from courses?

Frankfort and Empire are nice, and there are similar small towns up the Leelanau peninsula. Also all the rental places around Torch Lake.
