Dick's Sporting Goods - Glove Protection Plan

Not sure if I am late to the party on this or what.  I was in DIck's yesterday buying a new golf glove.  And for an extra $4 they sold me their "glove protection plan".  The way it was phrased to me is that for $4 you bring in your worn out glove and they will replace it with the exact same glove or give you a gift card for the original purchase amount.  This sounds almost too good to be true, curious if this is a known thing and have people used it?

Should be any glove. Used to do this for baseball batting gloves which were about 50 per pair.

I tried to file a claim under it and it was denied. Brought it into Dicks and the manager honored it, but as a comp.

On what grounds was it denied? Is any sort of damage covered?

They just said it wasn’t covered under the warranty….. Dicks made good on it…. It it’s not as easy as they make it out to be

Good on Dicks for discontinuing this. I love a good deal but…

 

I appreciate still being able to go into a store like Dicks and touch see and try new merchandise. Even try on gloves to be sure they fit me.
 

Trying to get freebies on something that wears out via loophole is just sad. A premium glove is $24. If you replace

every 5 rounds that’s $5 a round. Golf season is short. Pay up and keep stores open. Cmon.

I don't know if this was a policy separate from Dicks' "No Sweat Protection Plan" or not.  But, if it was a part of that plan/insurance, this bullet point from the plan language on their website says it all:  

• Breakdowns due to normal wear and tear (coverage starts after manufacturer's warranty expires)

If this language was a part of the glove protection plan that Dicks sold, then I don't see why a consumer wouldn't bring in a worn out glove.  The fact that coverage applies after the manufacturer warranty expires is further proof that Dicks intends/intended to cover wear from prolonged use.  Customers aren't taking advantage of Dicks; Dicks was/is just betting that most people who buy it will not bother seeking an exchange or will forget they purchased it.  I don't know what the margins are on gloves, but I'd ballpark it at 50% profit for Dicks.  So Dicks is breaking even, at least, for each glove sold and then exchanged under this plan (assuming it's only good for one exchange).  Whomever came up with this idea at Dicks was obviously betting that increased sales under the plan would outpace the number of returns.

 

if this is good for multiple exchanges, then Dicks made a pretty stupid business decision.

 

A couple other points while I'm at it:

- I'm guessing any glove returned within the manufacturer warranty period has to have a defect that the manufacturer covers (not normal wear and tear).  That makes the most sense as the reason why an exchange would be denied.  So you'd have to wait 30 or 60 or however many days for the manufacturer warranty coverage to expire to then make a claim under the Dicks plan for wear and tear.  Again, Dicks is betting you'll forget that you paid the extra 4 bucks 3 months ago.  Also, some golfers will wear through a glove prior to the manufacturer warranty expiring.  So Dicks is also betting that those golfers won't hold onto an unused glove and extra month or so just to exchange it after the warranty runs out.

- I wouldn't consider this a 'freebie'.  Dicks is making an additional sale to make a profit.  If this was something Dicks offered for free and people abused it, then that might be a different story (still, Dicks is responsible for the language they attach to it).

The way I understood this is that you still have to pay for the "plan" each time so you aren't exactly getting a freebie as you put it.

 

Either way, I'd bet my house that Dicks/GG is coming out way ahead on this. The amount of people who took advantage of the protection plan is probably <5% if even that high. Just think about how many people don't buy the extra plan because they don't want to, how many people are buying a glove for someone else (Xmas, Father's Day, etc.), or how many people do buy the plan but just never take the time to go back and get a new one.

Using it to replace worn out gloves is just lame.

Looks like it's only $1 for the insurance plan (free glove) at my local Dick's.
