Considering a Move to Steelfiber

Kinda diggin the MMTs so far, my dude - but it *HAS* only been a lil range time and 9 holes last weekend and I got no complaints about the performance so far.

One thing I can definitely say is I was getting a good half-to-full club longer - especially in the 6-4 iron range. I play the front at the club pretty much the same every time - except stupid #6 where if I don't turn it over enough off the tee, I can have anything from a 4 to a 7 in - pretty much airmailed the green on every approach (in practically no wind). #8 was probably the most stoked I've been. It's a tricky long par 3 usually playing between 190 and 200 yards uphill. In non-windy conditions I'll hit a 4 and pretty much always come up short - but last week, the tees were up a little bit, shot it at 187ish to a pin cut in the middle of the pretty big green and proceeded to stripe a 5 iron right over the pin, wound up about 15-20 feet past. Best tee shot I've hit on that hole. So if a stock 27° 5 iron is carrying 195ish for me with 'em - man, I'll take that all day long.

Playing this afternoon and tomorrow sooooo ... we'll see how things continue to go.

Yeah…I did the old reply before reading the rest of the thread so didn’t realize you went with the MMT shaft. I was replying to just your initial post.

Sounds like you found a winner!

I definitely feel a noticeable load/unload with a full swing that I never really felt from the DGs. Like the noted 5 iron in my previous post; everything felt very smooth and effortless; like it was really working with me through transition and into impact. Obvi I don't have the speed I had when I was a kid and would just go balls out on every swing so I'm enjoying that feel so far; mostly as it keeps my tempo and balance steadier. Pretty much 100% of my misses happen when my tempo gets quick; typically when I want to go hard at it so knowing I don't HAVE to do that helps keeps me mentally steady.

Though it's not really there on 3/4 and shorter swings - feels very firm and stable through those. Which works well for my game as I don't tend to hit full irons from the fairway; I like to take a longer club and flight it down. Really only go full swing at an iron off the tee or out of a fluffy lie in the rough.

If ya look back a bit, you'll see I demo'd the Recoil 110 as well and aside from being lighter, I found the feel and performance from those to be very much like S400s to the point if I hadn't also been trying the MMTs, I'd have gone with them just cuz it'd been familiar with the dampening I was looking for. That little extra oomph from the MMTs was totally what steered me that way instead.

Interesting and great to hear! Thanks.

How would you compare the stiffness? I loved S400 in my wedges but like the 120g X100 better in my irons.

Hoping both X Stiffs play roughly the same, plus the added advantages of graphite in the MMT.

I might switch to them in the rest of my irons if the 4i works well for me.

Thanks for bearing with me, this is really interesting to me.

No worries dude - brand new thing for me too so happy to share how it's going.

Really don't feel anything of note in terms of flex difference from the S400s. If anything, I've always felt more of an upper-mid kick from them. For the MMT, I think they're spec'd as mid on the MCA site but it feels more on the lower end of mid.

I've never gamed anything X flex ever but I've swung some in fittings before and yeah; that does not jive with me one bit. Anything really firm I straight up can't hit - PX or like C-Tapers? Forget it. So I'd think if there was a significant difference in feel, I'd pick up on it and I just really haven't.

... I have found Steelfiber shafts do not have the kind of "kick" you find in many other graphite iron shafts or some steel shafts. They are also stouter feeling then corresponding graphite/steel iron shafts from other OEMs. Personally I love Nippon shafts and the 950GH is one of my favorites but elbow tendonitis prevents me from playing them. Glad you found some Nippon shafts that work for you!

Sam,  do you know of any graphite shafts (irons) that have a "kick" similar to the Nippon steel shafts?  I am still looking to re-shaft my 6 iron & cannot locate anything in graphite that resemble the Nippon light steel shafts.

... Larry I have never played or even hit light weight shafts like the 750GH WT so I would just be giving you an educated guess. That said, I found Recoil 95's to be very similar in performance to the Nippon 950GH. So you might look at the Recoil Smacwrap 760 or the new Recoil Dart.

Sam, I have 5 rounds and significant range time into the SteelFiber i80's.  They are very comparable to my Nippon 750GH steel shafts.  Same feeling in flex and weight.  Actually the Steelfiber is longer and more accurate.  Had Nippon 750GH Reg and now have SteelFiber i80 Reg.  Almost identical but a much better feeling in the SteelFibers when I go after the ball and take a huge divot.  No more jarring.  I am happy.

A couple of things:

a. That is a really clean workshop. Nice.

b. What kind of belt sander is that?  The reason I ask is because it looks like a 30" belt.  Everything I've read on this site suggests that those wont work for turning ferrules because the RPM is too high and will melt the ferrule.  Does it work for you?

A. Thanks! I'm an absolute neat freak (Thanks, Mom). Ms. aenemated is not. I spend a lot of time tidying up 😂

B. It's just one from Harbor Freight and yeah - it's not so great to the point I really don't use it for that exact reason. Fortunately BB&F ferrules I've put on haven't needed much effort so a rag and acetone has been more than sufficient for them. I'd only been installing graphite lately - which I wouldn't put near that thing - but when I swapped out the ferrules on my Muirfields yesterday, I'll at least give it credit for making cleaning/re-prepping the tips of the S400s I have on them easier!

I'm a believer in buying the best tools for the job but I also know I can get nuts into a hobby at first and then drop it after a few months. So life experience has taught me to chillax at first and if I stick with it; get the better stuff. Since I really am enjoying my foray into clubmaking I'll probably upgrade to one of the GolfWorks ones.

Yup, I wound up putting the MMT putter shaft in my Newport. For no reason other than just ONE steel shaft was driving my OCD crazy haha.

So no more steel in my bag either.

They are a very good blend of stable and active. They are not as boardy as I was expecting. It’s a feeling I really like. Impact is slightly less harsh than steel. I love that too. I get the feeling I can really load and feel the head through impact.

Just made the switch myself.  Got the same feeling...with alot less speed, but really stable shafts.

Most surprised by the long irons...might get the 3!

For me steelfiber have a unique feel that I really like.  No other shaft that I have hit over the years feels quite the same.  LOL I did have to get the weight right though.  I did not like the feel of the lighter shafts that I tried before I found the 110 gram shafts.

I just got a used set of FC115’s in stiff to experiment with. My only prior Steelfiber experience was with i95 stiff and they were too boardy for me.

I’ve always loved the Srixon Z765 heads so I ordered in a set to try with these shafts. I decided to glue up the 6 & 9 irons first to try rather than risk having to pull a whole set if I didn’t like the shafts.

After a range session tonight I’m very excited about this combo.

My goal has been to find a shaft that lets me use a smooth wedge-style swing without giving up distance or stopping power. I was pleased to find that was the case with the 9 iron. I was getting a very high flight that started on my target line and carried very well.

I was even more surprised that the 6 iron worked exactly the same way. If I make a smooth turn on it the ball just gets up and goes and the trajectory is very similar to the 9 iron.

I’ve been lost in the desert with my iron game for a good six months, especially the mid irons, which is rotten because that’s always been a strength of my game. Finding these shafts has me feeling better about things.

trying to figure out which Steelfiber shafts I want to put in my JPX 923 hot metal irons that i will be ordering.

for reference, i currently play i95 S parallel tip shafts. that is what i was fitted for at Club Champion, but i was a dummy and didn't try the i95 CW to compare. the i95 S don't feel bad but have minimal kick.

i have a test 8 iron with an i95 CW R shaft in it and that thing has a ton of kick in it.

i am leaning towards i95 CW R in the JPX 923 hot metal, but trying to decide if i should hardstep or not.

If you want just a little more kick than the i95 S - but less than the i95 R -  try the UST Recoil 95 Stiff (F4)  or maybe even the FC90 Stiff.

I have the i80 CW R in my irons.  Hard stepped once.  Love them!  Not quite the feel of my previous Nippon 750GH steel shafts.  But very close.  You should really like the CW's if you already use to the i95 S.  I would say they are very slightly softer.  So a hard step will make them more comparable but still a fraction softer to get the kick feel.

So a hard step will make them more comparable but still a fraction softer to get the kick feel.

i'm likely going to go i95 CW regular, its likely the right fit, but may hard step it once (i'm guessing i won't notice that much different but it will be a mental thing). If i hard step once, what do I play in my PW and GW? Do i play the i95 CW R straight in?
