It's just who TW is. If you want real emotional Hall of Fame speeches watch NBA and NFL speeches, most of them will make you shed tears. This gets a golf clap 👏

Well a big reason for the raw emotion in those speeches is you can't get into the NBA or NFL HOF unless you've been retired for at least 5 years.  For example Peyton Manning went into the HOF last year, and he's been retired since 2016. There's no chance he's every suiting up for an NFL game again.

On the flip side I bet Tiger still believes he can win on tour given he's somewhat healthy (albeit he'll never play "full-time again"). I don't think Tiger reflected on any of his tournament wins in this speech because this wasn't the end, but just a mere milestone. I bet if Tiger gave this speech in 2032 instead of 2022 it would've sounded a lot different.

So, the part where he cried when thanking mom for taking out a second mortgage on the house…

I didn't know that detail and I feel like I know a good bit about the guy. Pretty cool.

Loved all the talk about Destroyer. Man, I miss that course.

Don't miss that tree straight ahead on #2 though.

I’m not a tiger fan but appreciate important sports moments.  I enjoyed his speech.  I like that it wasn’t a cookie cutter prepared speech.  Wish he would have kept going.  Sam did really well opening for him, she seems much more mature then her age.  One thing I noticed is tigers gait didn’t look to good.  I feel like it looked better a couple months ago.

What took the induction so long?

The WGHOF kept changing the age limits over the last decade or so. You used to be able to be inducted at age 40. Then it changed to age 50. Couple years back they lowered the age requirement again to 45. VJ and Phil were inducted in their early 40's.

I got to play there once when my father was still alive and used his retired military status to get me on but I was still a double digit handicapper at the time so it ate my lunch, but there are a few military courses that are nice tracks if you have the military family to get you on. Always tried to get my godfather (my father's commanding officer ) to take me to play Pendelton but it never happened. When they opened El Toro I played there often and of course the Bayonnet Course at Fort Ord was/is a monster

They opened Destroyer up to the public like 20 years ago or so but military and first responders still get first dibs on tee times so it's not the easiest to get on. Fortunately, a buddy of mine grew up like 5mins from it and a friend of his worked in the pro shop who'd hook us up with tee times most of the time.

And yeah, it's not an easy course at all. The greens could get quick and most all of them have pretty serious tiers; so if you were above the hole on a lot of them you were dead. 16, 17 and 18 are stellar closing holes, a long par 4, long par 3 and long par 5 that all run down the runway of the Air Force base and the wind could be going either way. Bonus - get to see fighter jets land every so often.

Super delicious food in the clubhouse too!

Enjoyed the ceremony, interesting group of inductees, will be happy to watch the future ceremony to hear the speeches of those that want to tell other people how they should feel, act, deliver a speech and dictate its content.

Wait a minute, none of those negative nellies will ever be inducted, lol. And they clearly weren’t listening to at least three of those who spoke - those kind of attitudes are always part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Watching the montage, I had a few thoughts.... If you were to try and describe or tell someone who didn't know about any of the wins, the comebacks, the clutch moments, they would not believe you.  It would sound surreal or hyperbolic.  But it is not.  I watched it all with my own eyes.  I'll be honest and say I was moved to emotion watching it all edited together.  I think the feeling was gratefulness.  Grateful to be able to be a fan of sport during a time of greatness.

You see Tom Brady animated when he talks about Tiger. TW earned that awe from him and everyone by delivering outrageous entertainment time and time again. With Tiger it was, “he can’t, he can’t…holy ****!!!”

Brady, a guy who attributes his own success to, even at the top of his game, relentlessly practicing the smallest, most, basic details, just sees, like the rest of us, the explosive moments of TWs performance and the roars of the crowd.

Brady and adult sports fans appreciate (are “grateful”, as you say) that seeing TW play golf could take you back to being a kid again. Jumping up and down cause your team just homered in the bottom of the ninth.

So, it was cool for TW to share the foundations of his drive to succeed. It’s been discussed a lot, but not really by TW himself.

Nobody knew that, as a child, he wasn’t allowed in the clubhouse because of racist golf Country Club rules.

That’s some serious stuff and must have pushed his motivation level through the roof.

So, as a kid, since he couldn’t hang out in the clubhouse, he would just lace up in the parking lot and walk up to the  starter with two questions,

”Where’s the first tee?” “What’s the course record?”

Then, years later, at the grandest country club of them all….

”What’s the course record?”

FFD6C865-21A9-4BDA-A89B-AE5491E129F6.jpeg

After round 3, there was a third question, "Why is Colin Montgomerie here?"

He made the speech about all those who helped. It was him, he's a bit geeky and awkward normally.

How about knowing your folks took out a 2nd mortgage to fund the junior circuit? No pressure kid, go have fun.

He didn't mention the name of a single caddy or coach.  It all seemed rather impersonal, like he was in a place with people around him but not really in the relationship with the people.

Yeah, I've said a lot - if you weren't there to witness it and how he absolutely, 100%, completely changed how everyone looked at professional golf ... just looking at the highlights and looking at the wins and performances simply don't tell the whole story.

It sounds so much like a cop out but "you had to be there" couldn't be more true. I'm glad I got to watch it happen in real time.

I took something very different away from his words..

“You have to understand I got here because of my upbringing. I had two unbelievable parents… I didn’t get here alone.

Golf is an individual sport…we do things on alone a lot, but in my case I didn’t get here alone…I had unbelievable parents, mentors, and friends who allowed me and supported me in the darkest of times in the highest of moments.

So I’d like to say thanks to my Mom, Sam, Erica Charlie, everyone here, all my friends who came out here.

This is an individual award but it’s actually a team award. All of you allowed me to get here.”

He's Tiger Woods - everyone knows who his caddies and coaches were, and if you thought his speech was impersonal I don't know what to say.  Probably the most personal and emotional, for Tiger, he's appeared outside of immediate and competitive reactions.  The guy was clearly talking from his heart and literally thanked everyone - which, btw, means he's thanking Stevie and Hank Haney -- what a nice gesture given the history once their relationships ended, same with Butch honestly.  A really nice way to handle it and actually caught me by surprise in a way and in a good way.  I thought, "good for you, Tiger" - wasn't sending any messages or leaving anyone out or ranking or frankly making the speech a lot longer than it would have needed to be (then people complaining about that).

Seemed like he was himself, what more would anyone want from him or anyone else.  It was his moment.

Yeah. I think that's about right. There is a wall there with sentry on call always. He's been like that for his whole life, not sure he can be judged for it. Weird, daughter mentioned Comicon. Tiger is like Clark Kent, a nerdy dork who rips off the shirt and goes super hero. He has that air. The guys that helped professionally got more than a square deal. Harmon, Haney, Williams, his management, the PGA, the players. He's made everyone around him filthy rich. Think he wanted to make it more about mom & dad, family and honor that. They got this off the ground.

His final words: "All of you allowed me to get there"...how about "All of you helped me to get there, and without you I wouldn't be here".

But they allowed him...

It's semantics, I get it, but that's the point, change a few words, mention a few more names, etc, and it's a great speech.  And maybe a little less of:

Well, that backup then turned into putting contests, which I ended up pocketing a few more quarters, which led into skins games, which led into dad's finding out why -- okay, how did you get more quarters? Then he'd say, okay, well, you can't putt for quarters. Fine, done, I won't putt for any more quarters. I come home a week later, I've got a pocket full of dollars.

I told you not to putt for quarters. I didn't. Okay. No more putting for money. Done.

Next week, come home with a pocket full of dollars. He said, I thought I told you never to putt for money again. I didn't. I went out and played skins.

Anyone else noticed when TW started giving some shout outs to old friends, the camera panned to Justin Thomas who had his mouth open hoping TW would mention his name 🤣🤣. Sorry JT your a fan, not a true homey!

LOL!>>>>Nor did he mention:

      Mark O.

      Fred C.

      Steve S

      Butch H.

      ETC.....

Never mind, List to long .....Just keep it to your immediate family.

This way you don't have to apologize to the ones you forget to mention.

That was the best part!

TW never shares that stuff. It’s him letting people in and saying,

Hey, this is why I am the way I am.

He’s not trying to justify anything, just…this is how it was.

If you really pay attention to what he said, you start to understand the guy a little more.

As far as parsing his words. Again, you need to pay attention to how he said it. Tiger knows he doesn’t show emotion . But to whatever extent he was able, he wanted to share some very personal things about his childhood with the fans. And thank those who supported him most publicly as he was being honored.

I thought he nailed it.

How, when he was 14, his family took out a second mortgage to cover his AJGA travel expenses – and that when Tiger signed his first deal with Titleist, the first thing he did was pay off that loan.

“So without the sacrifices of Mom,” Woods said, getting choked up, “who took me to all those junior golf tournaments, and Dad, who’s not here, but who instilled in me this work ethic to fight for what I believe in, to chase after my dreams – that nothing’s ever going to be given to you, everything’s going to be earned.

“If you don’t go out there and put in the work, if you don’t go out and put in the effort – one, you’re not going to get the results, and two, and more importantly, you don’t deserve it. You need to earn it.

“So that defined my upbringing. That defined my career.”
