Dude don’t fret too much.  The PLD is still great looking.  And I am all ears for this fitting write up.  Mine is in 16 days and I’m beside myself.  I hit the Blueprint S for the first time the other day and could not believe how good they felt and performed.  I’ll leave with 13 new clubs (maybe more) guaranteed.

Oh, and a little birdie tells me I’ll be picking up my putter that day too.  That’s like a 3.5 week turnaround.  Crazy!

Thanks I like to think so too! The off white accents should compliment the patina I hope. I left the face smooth but am already debating a shallow amp mill 🙈

haha I’m in the same boat! Love my miuras but have always loved the ease of a ping iron. Curious to try the wedges as well. Always been a vokey guy but we haven’t exactly been getting along lately. Predicting a G440 driver and 3 wood as I’ve already hit them and they were fantastic. Somehow even better sounding and feeling than G430. Not sure my trusty TSR2 7 wood is going anywhere….. Will report back soon!

The S159 are amazing.  Those I actually do have experience with.  They feel great, especially their grinds, which have a very quick/smooth feel through the turf.  I bet you’ll like them.

And I’m sorry to tell you, but my friend who went out said the 7 wood is the best club they have…so might as well keep that credit card warmed up 😂

My Ping HQ Fitting Experience (PLD & Full Bag)

I want to preface that I’ve always been a fan of ping golf clubs. If I could play a full bag of anything, it would likely be ping followed closely by Titleist. However, like most of my fellow WRX’ers I do prefer playing the best club for me, which usually results in a mixed bag. I went into these fittings with an open mind and although I had done a lot of preliminary research on what I thought/hoped I would get fit into, it was a treat to try every option in the Ping catalogue, something I think you can truly only do at their HQ in Phoenix (especially when it comes to the PLD line of putters). Enough of that, lets dive into it…

PLD Fitting:

This is a world class offering that Ping have created. I will not speak to the mobile fitting option but from what I’ve read in this thread, there are a lot of happy customers and I’m not the least bit surprised. I’ve had a few putter fittings in my day (club champion & modern golf Toronto) but nothing has come close to this and I can’t stress enough the importance of a putter fitting. I know we can roll the rock with anything but, the piece of mind you have knowing everything is dialed in to your specs truly inspires confidence on the greens. To me, confidence is everything on the putting green.

When I signed up for my in person fitting at Ping HQ, I received promptly in the mail the iPing putting app box which included the iphone/ipod mount, the ipod touch itself, and a nice PLD putting disk (you get to keep the mount and disc which is a nice touch). I won’t dive too deep into the app and numbers but it’s a very user friendly system and I was able to roll my puts at home and get them the data they needed prior to my fitting.

Fast forward to the fitting. It’s a great feeling rolling up to a company’s HQ. It’s nothing fancy from the exterior, but it’s any golf/club lover’s dream. My fitter Colton greeted me as soon as I walked/checked in and we soon made our way to the PLD fitting room. Some of the room was under construction but the main area was very cool (see photos). We jumped into my fitting by rolling my gamer (Taylormade myspider Tour L Neck) using the iping app to confirm the initial data I sent in. The numbers added up and from there, Colton gave me an in-depth analysis of my numbers, what they mean, what he wanted to improve, what was working well, etc. He answered (in great detail) a few of my questions about the putters, finishes, necks, science behind them, etc. He also made a point of asking me what I like to look down at (blade/mallet), which weight I usually prefer (heavier vs lighter), and what I like the putter to feel like (firm or soft). Now we were off to the races.

We started out in the anser 2 and already we started to see some better results than my Spider Tour L neck. However, like most anser styles, I love the look of them, but tend to block them quite frequently. Enter the Anser 30…… It was love at first site with the softer lines and especially in the Patina finish. It provided the best numbers thus far and felt very predictable (something I struggled to feel with my spider and its soft-ish insert). I still wanted to try out a few options and Colton was very open to it, something I really appreciated. We tested out a DS72 with plumber’s neck which I really wanted to love but performance wise, performed a smidge worse than the anser 2. The Oslo 3 was next on the chopping block as it also suited my straight to slight arc stroke type. It performed similarily to the anser 30 but I just didn’t love the look and the feel was “different” off the face even in the same milling. We then fine-tuned the anser 30 and spoke about finishes, milling, site lines, etc. We then took a few of them outside to test out some breaking putts and more importantly, some of the different milling options. The deep mill has always been a no go for me as it provides me little to no feedback and feels a little too soft which led to a lot of putts left short. The shallow AMP mill and smooth face (like the victor hovland model in stores) were my top two. After speaking with Colton, we decided on the smooth face as I could always have it milled after if needed. If you start out with a shallow or deep mill, there is no going back (unless you are ok with shaving a pretty significant amount of weight off the putter). Long story short, the experience was great from start to finish. Colton was extremely knowledgeable, patient and allowed me to try virtually anything I wanted. He was even able to track down the headcover I wanted and included a couple extra grips for me as backups (not to mention the free Ping Proving Grounds hats). At the end of the day, we settled on the following:

Anser 30

Dark Patina Finish

Off White accents/flange line
Length: 33.5”

Lie: 20
Loft: 3

Stepless Chrome Shaft

PP58 Mid Blackout Grip

For those that have been following this thread and reading about my “cavity dilemma” …. I am happy to report that during my full bag fitting today, Colton and one of the Engineers came out to visit me on the range. They handed me my PLD (perfect timing) and told me that they would be willing to make my putter using the old CAD file with “PING” in the cavity if I wanted. It would of course add some wait time but they would be willing to do it and allow me to roll the one they presented me in the meantime (pretty sweet touch there). They sympathized and understood that for the amount of money, I should fully love the putter I’m purchasing. The engineer did let me know that the PLD logo may also be getting changed over to the new old-school redwood ping logo. This means that my putter (currently with the PLD logo in the cavity) is likely being discontinued and would be considered rather unique/rare. Whether or not this is true, it does add a new level of bag swag which got me thinking…. “Maybe I won’t hate it”. Well sure enough, we took it out of the box and it looks absolutely beautiful. The best part, and I kid you not, I proceeded to knock down my first three putts with it on the practice green, all at 15 or so feet. I looked at the boys and confirmed that there will be no changes taking place, I’m a happy camper. All this to say, world class service by a company that truly cares about what their consumers want. Couldn’t thank the boys enough and I can’t wait to game this thing for years to come.

Full Bag Fitting:

I’ll spare most the theatrics here. Tyler was my fitter who was a very knowledgeable and stand-up guy. The facility is fantastic. Nice wide-open range with some targets (no greens with flags unfortunately) and some very well-manicured turf. We used trackman and the balls were some very fresh ProV1 X’s. He took measurements of most of my clubs so he knew exactly what he was working with (shaft, length, lie, loft, etc.)

Tyler had me warm up, put my shoes on and provided me with a new leather glove from ping (nice touch). He asked me the usual questions about which of my clubs I was enjoying, which ones were causing me issues, my typical miss, usual ball flight, etc. We started out with the irons; it became obvious rather early that my Miura TC 201’s with DG X100’s weren’t going anywhere. This was no knock on the ping irons, the blueprint S and T’s performed great and although I liked them, there was no discernable gain in performance and if anything, my Miura’s felt better and were a little more consistent down range. We did play with lie angles and a few other shafts just to be sure (I love to test everything) and it confirmed what we were seeing. One of the things I really appreciated about Tyler was that he wasn’t trying to sell me clubs, he was trying to get me the best fit. Most of their master fitters have worked elsewhere, for different brands or fitting companies and even though his job is to sell clubs, he was the first to say “I wouldn’t touch those miuras if I were you”.

Fast forward to the wedges and it was more of the same. I did enjoy the different grinds of the S159’s but did not care for the look and honestly preferred the feel of my vokeys. The audible difference was noticeable and he recognized it as well. The chipping/putting green offers a variety of shot options from tight lies, uphill/downhill, first cut, rough, and bunker. It’s an ideal spot to hit all the shots.

Next up were the woods, which is what I really wanted to focus on and dial in. Right away we noticed that my G430 woods simply weren’t spinning enough with the Tour Black 2.0 X shafts. One thing I will say is the new G440 line launches a touch higher and spins more. For me, it was exactly what I needed. I could definitely see high spin players sticking with their G430’s. When it comes to sound and feel, I have to give the nod to the G440 line. Regarding shaft options, we tried a lot, certainly not everything as I know what kinds of profiles I get along with but from what I saw, they had everything from Fuji, Project X, Graphite Design, Diamana, etc. We tested mostly ventus blue/black, tensei blue/white, Diamana WB & BB, and the project x lineup (I don’t get along well with GD shafts). To my surprise, the Denali Black won out in both my Driver and 3 Wood quite easily. As a true WRX’er I love the exotic stuff, so I was a little heartbroken that the Denali Black was the proper fit (still a nice aftermarket shaft but you know what I mean). It offered me a touch more feel than my Ping Tour Black shafts increasing both launch and spin enough to give me an additional 9 yards in the air on driver (with improved downrange dispersion) and 7 more yards in the air on my 3 wood (also improving downrange dispersion and feel). I will add that during this entire time, Tyler was consistent in asking me for my feedback as to how things were feeling, something every great fitter does well. I’m very familiar with Trackman but It was nice to look at the numbers alongside him and be able to ask some questions, to which he had all the answers. Much like my PLD fitting, we tried everything I wanted to try which was great and allowed me to feel like we left no stone unturned. Lastly my trusty 7 wood. Although they didn’t have too many shaft options for this club, I was able to try the new Diamana WB 83X which ended up being a great fit, tightening up dispersion over my TR Red 8X and giving me a more predictable launch window. Although I could game this shaft, it did feel a little too heavy/stiff for my liking so we spoke about some other options. “Why not get a Denali Black 80X in there”…. He’s likely right so this is probably what I’ll go with. I’ve always wanted to have matching wood shafts and for the first time ever, I think this shaft might be the one to finally do it. For my moderately aggressive transition (Driver SS at 111-114) it seemed to stay with me and deliver the perfect amount of kick at impact.

All in all, this was a great experience from start to finish with both the PLD and Club Fitting Team. The facility is world class and the fitters really know their stuff. The hospitality is second to none with the freebees and complimentary drinks during your stay. I would highly suggest this experience to anyone who is a Ping loyalist. I’ve attached a few photos and hope you all enjoyed this novel of a write up.

Cheers!

Seeking some advice here.

So I posted my putter a few pages back (Ping Anser X) and was super stoked to get it and start using it.

Backstory: Brought in my gamer a Lajosi LP808 33” 71* 2.5* loft which has literally changed my putting from average to great. Did the stats testing with the cradle and came out as a +2.4 with it. Almost didn’t even move forward with getting a putter which Colton understood and acknowledged but I was with my dad and it was his Christmas present from me so said why not I’m here. Mentioned I liked a lighter putter so by process of elimination and by looks landed on the only Anser X on the rack which I stumbled upon in the back corner so put it to the test. Came back as a +4 and just barely missed out being on the board. Decided this had to be the one so we did the loft check test (2*) then moved on outside. Since it was an unpopular model Colton had the engineers cut it down to 33” and gripped it so I could use outside and it was great. So got everything on paper specs wise and he mentioned he was going to go +3 upright for the finished product based on what he saw.

I cannot for the life of me putt consistently with this thing it feels way heavier then my Lajosi and I’m pulling way more putts then I ever had and distance control has been average at best. So I’ve been splitting my long putting practices between my Lajosi and Ping and just night and day I putt better with the Lajosi in every facet.

Has this happened to anyone else? I’m thinking maybe it’s the upright lie angle and overall heavier weight of the Ping? Starting to really get buyers remorse unfortunately so was hoping I’m not the only one this has happened to.

Ping G430 Max (15*,18*,21*)

Reach out to Colton he should be able to help out, I wonder if they'd send out another cradle to retest if something is off.

Definitely reach out to Colton. I’m sure they can flatten out that lie angle and perhaps find some way to shave some weight off. The other obvious truth here is that the production team could have made a mistake regarding weight and lie angle. Only way to find out is to send it back to them. I have no doubt they will find a solution for you 👍🏼

Cheers!

Man, I am beside myself waiting...I'm up at HQ 2 weeks from today.  Putter looks amazing, and I cannot wait to get my mitts on mine!!  I'll chime back in with my full bag fitting and putter review.  I'm too ho-ish to leave HQ as empty handed as Tilly.  They could tell me all my clubs were perfect don't change a thing, and I'll still get a whole new bag 🙂

Thanks all I will send an email out today. I made a mistake in the post above as it was Alex not Colton I did my in-person fitting with. I will post updates as they come in after my vacation next week.

@TillyGolf dude thank you for this in-depth review, for the pics, & for taking the time to write that all up.

I didn’t think people left Ping Hq with a putter, is that just because (maybe?) you live in that area or why the loaner?  That is some top notch customer service, AND top notch service in regards to the PING cavity they are gonna do for you.  I can’t wait for my fitting now, I’m flying in to PHx and now am really glad I signed up for the in person fitting.  I hope I get to see the ping putter vault, I don’t know if that is always a part of the experience.

btw your putter looks 🔥

how is the Anser30 different from just a regular Anser?  I ask as I’ve always loved my old childhood Anser (with sound slot) and am partial to that look.
Thanks again and glad it was such a cool experience for you.

@grat702 Thanks man! Really enjoyed doing the write up and re-living the awesome experience. Regarding the putter, I think it’s just a one off situation due to how basic/plain my putter is (no personalization as I wanted to keep it really clean). They said they could just use it as a demo in the fitting studio so they didn’t mind me holding onto it until the new one came. However, I love this thing and the PLD no longer bothers me haha so I’ll be holding onto it. Regardless, some amazing customer service indeed!

The Anser 30 differs from the original Anser only in the neck shape (longer in the Anser 30 to promote less toe hang at 30 degrees). Other than that the shape of the heads are identical. I too am a huge Anser fan but needed something with less toe flow which is exactly what that Anser 30 is made for. I’m in love with it and can’t wait to game it tomorrow down here in Scottsdale.

You will love the fitting and the tour of the facility. You’ll absolutely get to enter the vault as it’s a part of the process which is really cool. You can pull the putters off the shelf and even roll a few putts in there haha. I got to roll the original ping gold putter and a few of tigers winning putters, great experience. Enjoy it and let us know how it goes! Photos of the flat stick are always welcome 😉

haha I’m usually exactly the same! No convincing needed for new sticks but there was something about that dense/solid feel of the Miuras that I couldn’t part with. Not to mention they are only just over a year old 😂

A year old?  Those are dinosaurs in my book!!!  My bag is like a pro or college sports team - you play for your spot every week.  Bad shot with a 9 iron?  Better step it up Mr. 9…you’re easily replaced 😂😂😂

Interesting, mine is definitely a little darker than yours but the photos I took make it look darker than it really is. I did specifically tell Colton that I wanted it as dark as they could get it. Nonetheless that is a gorgeous putter you’ve got there my friend 👌🏼

I believe you have to speak to someone in the Putting Lab specifically, Alex/Colton. Customer service doesn’t deal with custom PLD products and only gives you prospective options based on generalized models.

Colton got back to me this morning…. and they still can’t do it. Apparently since they have updated the CAD files and milling program for these putters, they no longer offer the ping in the cavity which is really unfortunate. The only thing he can offer is the Redwood City ping logo (below) but it would take 4 more weeks and truthfully I don’t really like the logo more than the PLD. Pretty disappointing. Let me know what you guys think. He included a photo of my putter on the product line also…IMG_6751.jpeg.7d51ad055141cf43055b9a7d29664aed.jpeg

Hi all - I have scheduled a PLD custom fitting in the UK in April and wanted to ask those who have done it any advice they would have for me prior to the fitting? I am a 4 handicap and am looking to cure my problem of constantly rotating in and out of putters - I'm hoping to find my forever putter here!

Currently gaming a Bettinardi SS8 Tour DASS long neck with some weight taken out. Always liked the look of blades and have struggling with high launch angle on mallets when there is back weight. Also from lessons I understand toe hang helps my stroke as face angle gets inconsistent with face balanced putters. I also use a line on the ball as can't trust the back line on the putter which leads to a right aim at address by default (coach recommended an odyssey versa as he says I align better using parallel lines).

Should I be upfront about all of this and guide the fitter towards an Anser 30 with site dot (need something on top line to ensure ball is centred) or let the fitter figure out what he thinks is best?

I also prefer a firmer feel - would that be stainless steel over carbon (and what milling type)? I play in the UK - lots of links golf therefore need something that won't rust as I don't like the look and will always be exposed to sea mist (wedges rusted over after one weekend last year). What would be the finish options I could consider?

Also - do you need to figure out stamping/paint fill before hand because you decide it there or do most people take it away and revert back when deciding on that?

Thanks!

Don't overthink it, go in with an open mind a roll some putts as you normally do. Also don't try and shoehorn into a specific model especially if it doesn't work, if you want to be better with 1 putter have to be open, I was ready to possibly move to a mallet if it fit me best despite preferring blades.

They should send a questionnaire before the fitting where you can input all of this info, also helps them prepare and get a few options ready for you to test.

If you're worried about rust then 100% get stainless, they'll have a few options for a firm feeling face when it comes to milling and should have a few examples to roll.

For engraving I think most of us went in with an idea in our heads and went over it with them, you can take some time as nothing is final until payment is made. It also might take some time for them to figure out specific engravings and they might see if possible or not.

Again don't overthink it, they're extremely professional and detailed, give them all the info possible early and don't be scared to asked questions when there.

I would echo this also. Go In there with an open mind and willing to try out everything. They will help you narrow down which head/weight/shaft and hosel configuration best suit your stroke. After that, I would say it all boils down to personal preference on site lines, milling, and finish. I would agree that you want to avoid carbon, as it will likely rust. Stainless steel is said to feel “firmer” but I firmly believe it all depends on which type of milling you go with. The smooth face will feel the firmest so definitely try one of those next to a shallow mill and deep mill. You’ll know what you like the feel of. As for types of finishes on stainless, there’s plenty of options from their standard hydro pearl ish finish which is like a matte silver, black, gunmetal, oyster (faded/worn dark grey), double oyster (darker version of oyster) or my personal favourite in stainless… glazed donut (pictures can be found in this forum). There’s a few more I likely haven’t mentioned but I have no doubt you’ll find one you like. It’s a great experience so go in there with an open mind and enjoy it, “the one” will reveal itself hahaha! Let us know how it goes/which model you ended up choosing.

Is the fitting with it virtually? I have been wanting a PLD for a while now. My problem is I feel like I “know” what I want, but I am likely wrong. For my eye, I like a blade w slant neck but not sure if that’s the best for me.

also, if it is virtually do they give you the same options for customization?

Waiting on a 'light' oyster finish then paint fills...bow chicka wow wow...

Hoping this gets here very soon...keeping it clean as well, no additional engravings just paint fill.

Hard to keep from making changes but I think this will be 🔥...
